When I travel to the NYC, I stay with my grand dad who is retired and always ask me to delay my return trip (I now live in Europe). Anyways, I contribute weekly to groceries, even though I'm hardly there, as I visit other family and friends or go shopping etc.... Notwithstanding this, Jamaicans who live in the USA have set a bad precedence in the past, by trying to prove to others that life was perfect in the States. Now with the Advent of social media, everything has come full circle. This is why I travel to other international destinations nowadays. Jamaicans should learn to communicate better with each other. I cannot read your mind. If someone is visiting, tell them your expectations.

True Jamaicans take note, don't go abroad to spend time with friends and family to be described in this way. Stay home and stick with your kind. We are use to sharing one mango for ten a we and no body don't talk about it. We are use to run to the bush, pick breadfruit and ackee and prepare a meal of roast breadfruit and ackee and saltfish and everybody, including friends and neighbours get a meal, and nobody no talk about it, because we all are one. We are use to ten a we lay across one bed for almost a year and nobody no talk about it. We are use to dishing food for family and making them feel welcome, even if a coronation market we go to sell and bun up inna sun whole day to provide it; we come home, cook, dish the food, wash the plates and clean up our kitchen after a hard day and don't complain, cause we know how to treat our guests. We are use to preparing for the visits of family members coming home from abroad: food galore; roast breadfruit with ackee and saltfish, soft yam with run dung, u name it, long table full a food. We don't ask how long u staying, as we often wish you could stay a long time so we can treat you 'Jamaican style'. We feel embarrassed if you try to wash the plates after you use it, as we feel it is our responsibility to make you feel welcomed and treat you right; as a matter of fact we share the food give unno so unno don't take too little because you might feel that anybody might say unno greedy, and we still ask unno if unno want more cause we a real Jamaican and we love to fatten unno when unno visit. Real Jamaicans a proud people. We nuh likky likky and beggy beggy! We have fe we own. We know to take care of our own and we don't call out our people on social media. We face tough times together, share with each other and lift each other. My apologies for "your family" who go to visit you and behave this way, it is unfortunate that you have to embarrass them on social media like this. Just tell them you cannot accommodate them next time, but please don't try to put down our people, cause we are proud hard working people and most of us are up before five in the mornings, work, study, care for our family, keep our home clean, etc and we don't leave dirty dishes in our sink inspite of our demanding jobs and life.

Great, I love your response. I've been to NY, Fla and SC and stay with my family and they just want to do things for me. Never a day and I'm not taken out. We are together to continue our family bond. If a family live like puss and dog when in Ja, it's not going to change where ever they go.

I've also have friends and family visit me in Jamaica , one of my girlfriend cannot stop talking about the Royal treatment I gave her, Jamaican breakfast for the week she spent with me , the locations of interest, the beach trips all at my cost, as a matter of fact I took vacation leave, however she felt embarrassed because she did not take anything for me , the truth is I never expected anything (if she never said I would not have known) I've entertained several friends, therfore if I should go to their place I'm expecting a good reception and to be entertained. I've never traveled without my money so I'm always able to if the need should arise bur my friends never allow me to, unless I go shopping on my own which I do.

Sandra Mattis Yes it is clear that she and her family and friends live selfishly. I am embarrassed for them and also for her because her video just highlight the point that some leave their values behind when they go abroad. I could never have someone come to visit me and have to dish their own food or ask me for food for that matter. Work can be challenging and stressful wherever you are, but one should never use your work conditions as an excuse for behaving poorly with ones family and friends. If this is how she feels she should sit and talk with her family, social media is definitely not the place to discuss them. I hope she will be thought the lesson that when money fail, possessions fail and employment fail you will always have someone (most of the times a friend or family) to stand by you and help you. I thank God for great family and friends both in Jamaica and abroad, as a matter a fact my friends are more than just friends, they are sisters and brothers.

Angella Nelson so true that is how we live. When foreigners come to Jamaica they are on vacation and we don't expect them to do anything. We want them to be comfortable and when they going away and we pack them up with ackee and breadfruit we don't ask them to pay for it.

Bway this sound bad. I got my visa twenty-four years ago. I only travelled on it four times. I was excited the first time, therefore I spend one month. After that two weeks the other two times. The last time I went to America was the fourth time. I spend one week and four days and that was 2015. When I hear this I feel so scared to visit people house and eat anything. I spend my vacation at a hotel in Jamaica. I called it staycation, I feel much better because when yu gu foreign nobody has time for you because they have to go to work. My relatives in America are never tired of me. They are there for forty years and out of the forty years I only visited them four times and I don't beg them anything. When they come to Jamaica I don't expect anything from them.

When I visit the state and see how some Jamaicans living am so sorry for them. Why would I want to leave my Island where I can live with less stress to live in a system that kills the people mentally just by taxing them. I choose life over material things. If you don't have health care you die because you can't afford doctors treatment . Even white people I saw homeless in the cold dress in tons of clothing dirty as hell crunching behind shopping cart behind building that's bed for the night. Jah know it sad... I do a week or a weekends each time in my Hotel then back to my home... those place is for short visit only. people too stressed in that specific Country

I grew up the old school way. When you have visitors/guest, you always go out of your way to make them as comfortable as possible and that means you foot the bill in most instances. One to two weeks of paying all the expenses, for example groceries and entertainment is not bad. Most people don't mind. But after that, it's too much financially. Most people simply cannot afford to have visitors for an extended stay and support them financially. That is really what the issue is and the problem. The host cannot afford it. When you stay for more than two weeks, you have to be able to contribute financially or else you become a financial burden and a money drain. The host is putting out extra money or has to find the extra money, that they were not putting out before. So the extra person or persons eventually start becoming a financial burden the longer they stay. In begining they are not, but over time they become a burden.

YES! People come lay on your couch for months eat your groceries watch your tv,without a conscience and make you feel like a guest in your own home. I had one person do that to me and it made it bad for everybody after, no one stays at my house let alone visit.

I agree. Don't forget the ones who call themselves family, stay at u' re place and when them leave u' re stuff leave with them. Most often when u go to JA. people are there to greet u, because they're expecting to receive. when u' re ready to leave, u' re lucky to find one person to go with u to the airport.

Vicky Morgan that is so true, not even a snack for themselves they would buy, these people save.all their money and do their business, but yet come over here And take. Advantage of u just cause I might be a nice person, life is hard any where u take it here or there, they people think money fries on tree, and when u go to Jamaica they don't offer u nothing,

I would not feel comfortable just sitting around doing nothing, if u gone to work its only fair that i can cook and keep the place clean so u can be comfortable when u get home, until i get something to do..when i came to America living with my sister after a week i decide that i don't want to be home, i started searching penny savers and newspaper and the third week i started working..stayed in that job for two years them upgrade myself..i hate sitting down and not contributing one way or the other...so you are speaking facts my dear

A relative wanted to come for a month. A grown married woman wants to come I would have to feed her, shop for her, entertain her. Pay energy bill for her, buy extra bath soap. Then pay phone bill because she would have to call her husband and children back home. Maybe she would bring her daughter and I would have to feed the daughter and buy winter clothes. I work three jobs, one full hours and the other two part time.
