Travis and Brooklyn, it is so generous of you both to share your experience and let everyone know how you all worked out the logistics of your sales of vegetables. It is so nice that you are willing to spend the time to share that info even though you all don’t sell any more. You both are such a fun couple with such adorable children. It is a pleasure to watch you both. Selfishly, I am glad that we get to watch you both much more frequently than when you were with Hoss Tools. You both provide some of the best information on the topic of growing! Thank you, thank you.

Here outside Boston Mass, most towns have a farmer's market each week, from June til Sept. And most people around here, know of CSA's. There's lots of local farms, small family farm market stores, etc. Sure, there's two big Grocery stores per town, but many people still shop local farmers. There's a BIG push around here for Farm to Table.

I’m a marketing major and i would love to have a small farm within 2 -3 years. Have been going back and forth considering doing something like this! But one thing I’ll never forget learning is it’s easier to sell 10 people a $1000 item vs trying to sell 1000 people a $10 item.

My model, people pay up front for the number of weeks they want. 25 dollars a week and 30 if you ant it delivered within the town. If I don’t have veggies for a month, they never lose their weeks. Travis, thanks for posting this video, very interesting. I have been selling tomatoes on the honor system for 4 or 5 yrs . I put a table on the side of my driveway and weigh out the tomatoes in baskets, put a container for them to put money in. I don't want to go sit at a farmers market all day long, to many other things I need to be doing. I have been raising tomato plants for 3 yrs now and I think that is a great way to make money. I usually try to have some ready to plant by April 1st which is a little to early to plant where I am in 7B but everyone is ready to plant about then if we have a little warm weather. This is interesting. I know around here, we do have a few different farmer's markets, but the times they are open are prohibitive to when a lot of people normally work. I also don't want to sit at the flea market on hot weekends when my kid is going to be shuttled around for sports practices in the coming years. I have looked into joining CSAs and they are all full around here, cannot get in even if you get on a waiting list. That's when I started thinking about doing my own CSA. This sounds kind of similar, but I like the way you did it with no obligation to have someone pick up every single week. I retire in 6.5 years and I want to go part time before that, so if I can do something similar, this might work. Now I just need some land so I can grow food!

It's an interesting model to consider.. I have been doing the more traditional CSA model for 4 years now. It always runs 20 weeks, and the customers pay upfront to lock in. The thing I have found is that it's very difficult to adapt that model to the extreme weather events around here. We took a 2-week pause in early July to try to work around the worst of the heat and daylight for the plants.. and that helped some.. but it left us with things like tropical storms or hurricanes (we had both in the past week) to still contend with.. so I have been wrestling over a more flexible model and what that would look like. Thanks for doing these videos. Very much appreciated. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

We took a break August through September because there's not much we can grow down here in those months. But we sold bags the rest of the year. Sales would vary depending on what was in season, and sales tended to decline in summer when most folks were on the road. We would average around 15 bags a week, but had some stretches where we were doing 30 bags a week (that was a little rough).

Sounds like all the conclusions I've come to.... work full time, so time consuming and laborious vs. income generated, marketing or selling of it, timing, short season here etc.... always try to give good value, but the fresh produce is so much better than you buy at the store. I will always grow more than I need by a long shot, but will just give it away to friends, family, local folks who need it, and the food shelf, all worth the effort, plus some for my chickens. The extra work and time of trying to sell it for not much profit, not worth it. Hate to see good food go to waste, but I love growing it. I have those same bags. Put back some nice watermelon jelly and some salsa with a good kick today. Nice episode guys. Take care.

We always have surplus garden veggies and fruits. My concern was always liability if you sold them to an unknown person and they claimed to get sick. What did ya’ll do to eliminate that threat? With Brooklyn’s background, you must have thought of that. Just 1 frivolous lawsuit could be devastating. Maybe you can discuss during the next episode of this series

So Travis. I was curious to know about how many bags you made up a week? Or, how many customers you supplied in a week? Also, if you want to divulge, how much did you make a month on your model?? Thanks. I’m researching all areas.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Our goal was to do at least 10 bags a week at $20 (later $25) each. But many weeks we would do between 20 and 30 bags. It varied from week to week, which was the beauty of the model because some folks only wanted a bag every other week and others wanted one every week. I would say that we averaged 15 or so a week. We also had a local country store where we would wholesale the excess. Given our 1/4 acre of garden, I think it's realistic to expect anywhere from $300 to $500 a week of income if you have the demand for your product.

I don't believe I've ever known a truck farm or CSA that wasn't backed up by an outside household income stream. I could see it working as a supplemental revenue source provided you avoid borrowed capital and understand the economics of scale. Personally, we choose to give away our extra eggs and tomatoes and just bank the goodwill. I'd never be able to charge what it's worth.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. That's what all the online market farming courses won't tell you ... it's hard to pay the bills initially just by market farming. It works much better as a supplemental income source as opposed to a main one.
@lmd2454

There’s quite a few small farms making 100% of their living through a CSA or market model. Most get started with an outside source of income but it’s very possible to build it up to the point of not needing outside income. Travis just didn’t want to go that direction I suspect.
@markware7748
@markware7748 2 жыл бұрын
@@lmd2454 It certainly could be done in a Goldilocks situation, long growing season and a reliable customer base. Getting from a large hobby garden to a profitable business takes some realistic analysis. The cost of scaling up with a new high tunnel or produce refrigerator or tillage implements can easily tip the scale into the red. My old uncle who farmed five sections of dryland wheat used to say that he believed he could net out the same with 8 acres and a mule. I doubt that Travis and Brooklyn, even with their ideal setup already in place could make ends meet just off the yield from the garden.

(I’m building my orchard and garden, and trying to determine how I can make money in retirement to pay for my hobby. You pick? Selling canned items like jams and jellies. Or just produce stand.). I think those questions would be more suited for an accountant. I guess it depends on just how much you're selling, whether you need to get licenses and such.

Sometimes I'll put them 4-6" apart and thin every other one later to use them as green onions. If you don't plan on doing that, I think 8" is a safer spacing if your'e planning on growing some big ones.
