Garlic is one of the rare crops that are planted at the same time, no matter where you live. Planting garlic in the fall will ensure the best results the following year. If you live in the southern states, the garlic will sprout in a few weeks and grow throughout the winter. If you live in the northern states, the garlic will sit in the soil and sprout the following spring.
Join us as we tell you why elephant garlic is one of the easiest types of garlic to grow. We'll also show how we're changing our garlic spacing this year by using drip tape with 6" emitter spacing. This new spacing will allow us to grow even more garlic in a smaller space in our backyard garden.

I don’t think it really tastes like garlic but it’s delicious and good raw. It’s also very ornamental and the hummingbirds love the blooms.

Yeah we use it a lot for pickling. We'll put a whole clove per jar of pickles.

I've got a little project going right now with all the tiny garlic cloves from the store I didnt want to peel - months of them crammed into a tall pot to use as chives.

So I've noticed every time you use the Dawg's bucket, the Bulldogs win that weekend. Keep on using that Dawg's bucket Travis!!!! FYI, I received my first 2023 seed catalog in the mail today. Like everything else the price of each packet has gone up, but growing your own food is still a bargain and you know what's in/on it and where it's been!

Haha! That may have more to do with the players and coaches than my bucket, but I'll take it!

Travis I have watched everyone of your videos . I watch them everyday. I have learned so much from you . I have been veggie gardening for 3 years and live in Southern SC, nearSavanna. I do have two questions for you. , you talk about storage “Under the barn”, for Sweet potatoes, garlic, etc. I would love video with discussion about storage , with a tour of your barn. What veggies you can store in there and how to do it. ? Second, last year I planted my garlic and in Spring I harvested. My heads of garlic, did not Clove out. The remained a small ball of garlic. What did I do wrong? For storage I left the greens on them and tied them into a bunch and I am hanging them in my barn. How do you do it and is my way acceptable? Thank you and your wonderful family for all you do. Karen Guth

We have a rack underneath our barn that we built years ago. It's basically just 2x4's and hardware cloth. That's where we store most of our veggies that don't need refrigeration -- onions, garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes. You'll probably want to plant your garlic in the fall and mulch it. You should have much better success that way.

I think I’m the north, the soft or hard neck garlic are both easy to grow. The trick to it is to keep the types separate and label them so you don’t miss any of the scapes in the spring.

I planted 12 1/2 pounds of elephant garlic cloves back in the middle of October. I always plant mine around that time. This year I'm experimenting with elephant garlic nodules, and I just planted them yesterday.

That’s funny, I hang my garlic braids in the basement next to the Buckeye flag and they keep perfectly all year 😁 I got mine in the ground a few weeks ago, and mulched it well with old hay so the freeze and thaw won’t push it up.

I planted my elephant garlic a few days ago here in central Texas. I planted the pearls and the biggest cloves I had left from this Spring. I only planted 15 of them because I don't have enough room for more. I had a whole bunch left over so I am fermenting them to use throughout the winter. I did one jar with Tabasco peppers that just put on their second harvest of the year. That should be an interesting flavor combination. I have one pumpkin out there that survived the squash vine borer attacks. It's still green and the size of a basketball. I'm hoping it gets ripe by Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Travis! I'm thankful for all your videos. You're teaching an old dog new tricks whether you know it or not.🐕

I planted Inchelium Red, a softneck variety, on November 12th and shoots were coming up one week later. I did two months of the cold treatment, and then did the fertilizer soak. Worked great. 100 percent germination. Florida zone 9B. I made a small lasagna garden for the garlic in the summer, and I put some nice yellow straw down to keep the soil cool as you suggested. First time trying garlic, hoping for big bulbs!

The UGA Extension website has a good article on garlic, leeks, and onions grown in Georgia. In addition to the NPK fertilizer recommendations, they also advise the addition of side dressed sulfur, noting that Georgia soils typically lack that mineral. I wondered also if sulfur would enhance the garlic's pungency
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
It probably would. It definitely enhances onion pungency.

Been doing great with hardneck garlic up here outside Boston in 6b replanting store-bought organic garlic I bought in 2009. Harvested 70 head last year and it lasted until late May. Planting more this year. This year I'm trying some soft neck for the first time, a variety called Tochliavri.

I like elephant garlic (though I also plant hardneck too) here in northern Alabama. However, getting only 1-2 heads for seed stock is hard as a lot of places either don't stock it or they only sell a huge amount --- and the seed stock is more expensive too. Normally I save my own seed stock of elephant garlic but don't have any this year because of a mistake. So I am starting off with a bunch of the corms this year and starting to grow the seed stock myself again.

I planted the "Pearls" that I harvested this spring in probably August. Not really thinking anything would come of them. They have all came up, after I put down about 4 to 6 inches of barn clean out on top of the bed. They were from some variety of hardneck garlic that I found growing at an old homestead site several years ago. I'm in Southeast Texas.

Happy Thanksgiving Lazy Dog Farm. I planted two varieties of hardneck garlic this fall, zone 6b. Music is probably our favorite and I'm trying one called Yugoslavian Red (I think 🤔) . Always believe we'll grow enough for my own stock to plant the next fall and usually end up using it all.

What is the size of the barbed end on the 8mil irrigation system from hoss tools? I'm trying go purchase row starts with a valve from drip depot. They're website has a barb size of 3.6mm and 7.0mm. At first I thought the barb was 7.0mm, but your website brings me to the 3.6 barb size. Would you be able to let me know which size would fit?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
This is the one we use: bit.ly/3CL1UOA It's 3.6mm. That's all you need when using the 5/8" mainline tubing as long as your rows aren't longer than 100'. If you have rows longer than 100', then you have to go to the larger fittings from what I understand.
