Lazy Dog Farm

Жыл бұрын

Earlier this year we planted an entire 30' row of Valencia Red Peanuts so that we could have our own boiled peanuts fresh from the backyard garden. We checked those peanuts a couple weeks ago and they're finally ready to harvest.
Join us as we harvest the entire 30' row of Valencia peanuts, pick the peanuts off the plants, and boil a huge pot of them. We'll show you the easy way we like to make boiled peanuts and also discuss other ways to cook boiled peanuts if you don't have a big pot or a propane burner.

Boiled peanuts done right is a southern tradition. As a kid I'd spend all day pulling up peanut plants so we could make some of the greatest boiled peanuts I've ever had. My step fathers family had been making boiled peanuts for generations starting in south Carolina. Nothing better than hot or cold salty boiled peanuts. .

The best boil peanuts are when you take them out of the ground and wash them and let them soak for a few hours and then barely crack each shell so the water and salt can get in there, and then put them in hot water in your pot, put you a can of Budweiser and put a little salt to start, let them boil for about an hour, but keep them stirred and then check for softness, and see if needed more salt.

I typically add star anise seed (adds a somewhat licorice favor) and rock salt to my water. In Hawaii, this mixture is the most popular. Split the shell just a bit at the pointy end of the peanuts to allow the water to enter inside the shell while its cooking. Bring the pot to a boil, leave covered for 70-80 (my preference) minutes then its ready. The flavor is incredible. The water gets inside the shell and cooks the peanut faster and minimizes the use of salt. Come to Hawaii and try some...hmmm, hmmm good!

Travis a little story on peanuts. My wife and I found a single PN plant 3 years ago growing by one of our fruit trees. We have no idea how it got there so just figured the crows brought it in from a fairly nearby field. My wife transplanted it in the garden, we saved the PN (seed), planted about a 4-to-6-foot row from them last year and then this year we have both a 60' row of them and an 80' row. Needless to say we are eating boiled PN, roasted PN, glazed PN, PN brittle and you name it - they DO multiply quickly. Love'em boiled! Thanks for sharing. 👍

Before I started growing my own, I used to buy my boiled peanuts from this little place in Old Town, Florida, called Maria's Dixie Nut House and Bait. Yum! Now I'm looking at pulling up 130 row feet of peanuts over the next month. I will save some for seed and boil most of the rest. I will, however, set some aside to make peanut butter and roast some for my Yankee wife who had a deprived childhood with respect to the proper way to cook peanuts.

I've been keeping the soils cooled off by watering in the blasting full sun heat. I'm surprised they are still standing. Checked soil temp regularly and they're staying cool, hopefully cool enough. Hey Travis, As far as cooking my peanuts I use a 23qt Presto cooker. As soon as your water comes to a boil, and your little chimney pops up put on your pressure regulator. Let the pressure build up to 10-15lbs and cut off your gas. also I salt my peanuts before boiling, this is much faster and will save you a tone of gas. Let them sit for about 2hrs.

Some of the best boiled peanuts I've ever had come from up that way. Sunshine Grocery between Vogel and Blairsville usually has some pretty good ones.

I'm late to the party and you're probably not responding to comments on a video this old, but if you are I'm wondering about how many plants made that bucket of peanuts you grew. I'm here because I had this wild notion to put a couple raw peanuts that I bought from the store (to make boiled peanuts) into some dirt and they sprouted. I planted them in a big tub thinking maybe I could grow enough for a pot of homegrown boiled peanuts, but now I'm thinking two plants ain't going to be enough. They are only a couple of weeks old. Thinking about running to the store to buy another bag. Just don't know how many more I should plant. I'm in south Florida, so not sure how well they will do in my climate, but I 'm going to give it a try.

It takes at least a 40' row to make a decent pot of peanuts.

As Travis said , the can boiled peanuts are nasty. I sell boil peanuts myself and sell on the side of the road. ( Still have most of my teeth though) thanks to my dentist. 😁 Seriously, if you traveling through the south and see a roadside stand stop and ask for a small sample, most vendors will let you try before you buy.

Oh my goodness. I've been dying for some boiled peanuts for over a decade. I've tried a few times, but I've never used fresh peanuts before and always wondered why they never got soft even after hours

Nurse Lucy we used to take peanuts that were not fresh and very dry and soak them in a bucket of clean cold water for 24 hours. Then boil them hard for several hours. They were ok. But nothing compares to fresh green peanuts for boiled peanuts It is a night and day difference like the difference in taste in a store bought tomato and one picked fresh ripe off the plant.

How long will the boiled peanuts last in a slow cooker on low heat before spoiling ?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
The longer they soak, the saltier they'll get. We usually drain and pull them once they taste salty enough.

I don't know if you could grow them way up north, but maybe. They're gonna need 120-140 days of warm weather. Valencia is the variety we like to use for boiling. We also have a variety called Virginia Jumbo planted.
