love the sentiment, but... there are things in the collection that aren't "replaceable", and that inadvertently, at least for me, put salt in the wound! And many employers have told me, and shown me!, that as far as most of world is concerned, I'm totally replaceable! Family and friends may beg to differ, but for a vintage collector (shall we say bona fide antique collector at this point?),... let's just use terminology that doesn't remind us of how delicate rare things can be! I've been through this after a house fire. Fortunately, a lot of my stuff was salvageable and the house was fixable. And I had good insurance. Was living in a couple different rentals for a couple years. Didn't get rented furniture so I just lived minimalistically. Bought a new mattress and box springs from Costco and my parents brought me some furniture. Was able to get some things from the house too. What a lot of people don't think about is that, when you have a house fire, you effectively have to also deal with flood type water damage because of the thousands of gallons of water they spray into your house when putting out the fire. Both of my laptops were pretty much at ground zero. Because they were on a shelf near the floor, they didn't even get melted even though they were in the same room as the fire. But they were full of fire extinguisher powder from my failed attempt to put out the fire and had been drenched in water. I restored them and it was a lot of work. One is now a retro gaming laptop and portable Blu-Ray player(Sony Vaio E series) and the other (POS dual core Broadwell i7 Dell) is now the head unit for my dad's OBD scanner. The other thing was the rodent infestation. I went into the house a couple months after the fire and you could hear dozens of mice scurrying around. I had a couple cases of MREs and they just went full smorgasbord on those. Had to throw away my fridge because it was a biohazard. I mean way more of a biohazard than usual :P Because of how they're built and, by virtue of not really having anything perishable in it at the time, I saved my mini-fridge. I went and got 3 or 4 bags of those vitamin D bait cubes and was just tossing handfuls of them around. Fortunately, the contractor was the one who had to deal with the resultant rodent corpses. It was basically a rodent genocide and I think I actually reduced the rodent population of the entire neighborhood significantly. Sadly, I lost a lot of my retro games when the attic mounted water heater in my parents' house burst over a decade ago. Sorry you lost everything. That's even rougher. I've had to start from scratch before, in my 20s, after my first divorce. I basically had an old car, a bed and some clothes.

When remediating mold, Dry-ice blasting is a useful process for electronics and paper. It's like sand blasting, but uses dry-ice (sold carbon dioxide) for the abrasive. Plastic. Tons and tons of plastic wrap. Not necessarily a good idea.

why? that is ridiculous. hurricanes are rare on the grand scale. it's a complete waste of resources to make extra sturdy packaging, stuff that 99,9999% of the time will be trashed the day after the purchase. the cost in energy and wasted materials will be enormous. if you are in a hurricane area, you can and should prepare yourself, by having insurance, having a storm proof house or store your valuables in a bunker or so.... Clint already did these things the best he could in his situation, he just got unlucky with that tree

I'm not a huge collector of vintage hardware, but I do have multiple collections of various other things. Heartbreaking to see some of the havoc that has been wrought upon the collection you've curated. Restoring and salvaging what you can will make it all the more special. Glad you're safe, brother.

29:50 I used to have that Tandy Power switch (or at least my parents did). The one plus side is that this is encouraging a general cleanup of things and they will look even better than they did before the hurricane!

Lovely to see Clint safe and optimistic. Like you said when life gives you lemons. Cant wait for all the videos where you take a deep inspection of some of these retro tech to see if they are as resilient like everyone says they are

So happy you're safe and that you're taking it all in your stride, My heart really does ache for the loss of the items you have spent so long saving and preserving, I understand how much joy these items bring you especially the printed material you have archived such as the packaging and the manuals and accompanying paperwork. I'm so sorry for the loss of so many historical and important items.

This hurts my soul. That Lamborghini laptop in that state..... that was my dream computer when it debuted. I got to say though, Clint, way to have an amazing attitude through such a terrible situation. The retro community is with you, friend. ❤️

I think you mean the Ferrari laptop? 😅 Coincidentally I had the netbook version of it. Very good netbook for it's time; dual core, HD screen, dedicated GPU. Served me really well when I needed to travel light.

The solid plastics do seem to hold up well as long as they don't get brittle, the rubberised finishes and buttons though they feel great when new, do go to sticky/goo with any whiff of humidity or just age.

So good to see you, Mr. Clint! I can't describe how much I appreciate your videos and how they've helped me deal with life's struggles. Wishing you all the best-cheers from Brazil

Glad to hear you and your family are safe. Even more happy to see you determined to get going again, despite the sheer mess and work that comes after such event. Using this as an opportunity to make some of that quality LGR content we love, shows that it takes more willpower than luck to get where you want to be. Take care.

I could watch such videos of cleaning computer all day. It's so satisfying when the box is all moldy but at the end there is a shiny computer on the table, which will probably work just fine. All the best to you and your loved ones Clint!

Thank you for sharing this with all of us. It’s great to see you back at it, and working to restore your things. I can’t imagine what you are going through, but the fact is you are showing us how even these small steps can bring about change.

Frankly this is an excellent idea. Restoring the damage is an interesting and satisfying process even for retro stuff that's just been poorly kept (instead of hit by a hurricane), so videos of it is absolutely something I will watch.
