Thief is probably the best game I've ever played. It's more than a game really, it's an "experience". I agree that the Gold version is best, however one thing I liked better in the original version is that there are no human enemies in the Lost City level. It just felt more right for there to be no humans there.
@OrnluWolfjarl11 жыл бұрын
Actually the supernatural levels are some of my favourites. They force you to be even more stealthy than usual, because dispatching the creatures on those levels is so damn hard. If you want to dispatch them, they offer some great alternative ways. You can use flash bombs against undead (2 flash bombs will kill most of them), and you kinda have to discover this by accident. The Bonehoard mission has a certain projectile trap that allows you to lure zombies to it and watch them get burst to pieces as they mindlessly try to enter the door. These levels are also much more creative and varied than the usual "rob the manor" missions you find earlier on (with the exception of Constantine's Sword mission)

I loved going through Thief 2 on Expert mode. That shit got crazy near the end. Karas wasn't exactly threatening considering he sounded like Droopy Dog with a god complex. CR Meyer I think that that's what was threatening about him. He sounded too unreal and creepy. I do wonder though how different the game would feel if he sounded more like a menacing Brit.

Considering that most of the actors at the time were probably office workers, and had no experience voice acting, he'd probably sound quite normal. xD I just can't help thinking of him as a wormy little sociopath who wants to "take revenge on all those who mocked him in life." @@skaruts Elizabethan English*. Old English is what Beowulf is written in. As in, "Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum, þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon." The Hammerites also use extremely bad Elizabethan English, just so you know.
@skaruts6 жыл бұрын
SonofSethoitae, indeed. I'm aware of that. Actual Old English is a totally different language in itself. But since many people colloquially refer to old modern-english (shakespearean mostly) as _"ancient-english"_ or _"old english"_ I tend to just go along with it. On a related funny note, as far as I understand it, people often tend to think of Thee and Thou as though they're formal pronouns when in reality it's the Ye and You that are the formal ones. :)
@SonofSethoitae6 жыл бұрын
I mean, technically "Thee/Thou" and "Ye/You" are the same word. When the printing press came about, they used "Y" in place of the letter "Þ" to save money, because they look similar if you really squint at it. Edit: whoops, I remembered wrongly. "Ye" is from a different root than "Thee", although the part about them replacing the letter Þ was true, in cases like "Ye Olde Shoppe".

Apart from the great stealth action, Thief is also a great horror game. The undead in Thief scared the shit out of me as a kid. I'm pretty sure I was not the only one. Took me quite a few attempts to overcome my fear, but once I did, other horror games didn't raise my pulse one bit :)
@cougar2k7206 жыл бұрын
Actually, out of all the undead, the ones really scared me was the Hammer Haunts, and hammer priest ghost. For zombies, it actually not too bad except you want to get rid of them all and running out of holy water arrows and painstaking drowning them instead, lol

Yep the Hammer Haunts were terrifying since they were so fast and powerful. Flash Bombs would kill a group of them in no time though, so if you could get all their attention and when they rush to your spot just throw down a flash bomb, they were done for.

good review, but some of the criticism of confusing level design was while playing that infamous manor, it was supposed to be confusing, it was an absolute stroke of genius i thought to start with the "normal" mission from constantine and then suddenly the manner is like getting weirder and weirder, i am also one of the these people who thinks the zombie levels provide contrast to thief 2, they then reflect one another the first is before the mechanists and the world is very much full of supernatural stuff :) in the second game you revisit areas that where TERRIFYING, and they are built over and mechanised i cannot really describe the effect this game had as a pair with the two games, it was just stunning, the highlight of the gaming decade for me
@LGR11 жыл бұрын
Actually, my criticism of confusing levels are largely aimed at places like the thieves guild, the various underground passageways, and the various crypts, not the manors. But yeah, the zombie levels do provide some contrast to Thief 2 and make Thief Gold feel more like its own experience, so there's that!

@SongOfStorms4117 жыл бұрын
The problem with the Thieves Guild mission is that it was added in Thief Gold and not part of TDP. IMO, all the levels added by Gold felt kind of bolted on and less polished than the base game had been. And in the case of the Lost City mission, Thief Gold actually made the mission materially worse. For this reason, I don't agree with the general recommendation that Thief Gold is "better".

A true masterpiece. This game is the definition of art. And there is a lot of us thief fans who actually think T1 is by far the better of the 2 original games. For me the supernatural attribute what sets is apart from thief 2 and to its advantage. I mean look at a mission like "The Sword" and think about you just defeated satan. T2 was a lame-ass boring "steal this, steal that" game compared to its predecessor. I dont say i hate T2, I love every bit of it. Even T2X, and a lot of fan-made missions. Its just that T1 raised the bar up so far for me, its impossible to top that. And the reboot? Its not even worth seeing in my opinion.

One of my favourite series! I can't really agree with you that the combat is more fun in doom though, in my book both sword- and bow fight are done very well in Thief, and you being in the position of disadvantage is intended, since you are meant to be a thief, not a war tank. This is a first person sneaker, not first person shooter after all. Combat should be the last resort normally, unless you really want to go that way. Same goes for undead, you can sneak around them perfectly.

I used to start playing Thief about ten pm and play it until the sun came up, all the time sitting in a completely dark room. SO MUCH FUN! It is definitely my favorite game of all time. I'll never understand, however, why eveybody hates on the supernatural stuff in it. When Thief II came out, I wsa sorely disappointed with it's lack of weird critters and bizarre twisted environments. I'm honestly not even sure I ever finished that game. I know I never finished the third game. To me they just didn't stack up to the original. I would gleefully sit alone in only the light of the screen, completely still in-game, and watch and wait for the perfect time to launch an arrow or bludgeon an unwary guard. And I would sneak around so slowly in levels like the haunted cathedral, scared out of my wits, trying to never catch the attention of those things, whatever they were. I don't remember. But damn! The audio design in that game was stellar! It truly was the source of all of my dread while playing. It was perfect. Anyway, I'm glad to see someone enjoying this game so long after it's release. I absolutley adore this game, I remeber playing this first time on my dads pc when i was around 14 years old, and ever since then i love sneaking around video games with my trusty bow and arrow and looting the place. Which is why i love doing it in Nowadays in Skyrim, nothing better than a woodelf thief in the thieves guild. Also cool video LGR!

I still can't get over the changes they made to Garret. It's disappointing to see what they've done to him in the reboot.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new Thief. I'm not holding out hope, but I think they learned from Deas Ex that sticking at least a little bit to the core franchise elements is a good thing.

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Ken Levine was either one of the art designers or lead artist for this game before founding Irrational.

I think he wrote and designed Garret. Could be wrong though but I recall hearing it somewhere. :)

Your guys are close to the truth.Ken Levine was in fact the main writer for first two thief games.

There were indeed plenty of dogshit games in 90s, but there were no stand-out genres and hence games would have more freedom to experiment with game mechanics. Nearly all my favorite game series have drifted away into completely different territory from the originals: Tomb Raider is now a 3rd person shooter rather than a slow burning platformer, Thief became casual, Silent Hill did away with all puzzles ( which were one of the most memorable aspects of the originals ) in favor of more combat, most shooters are not balanced ( artificial difficulty ) and have the incredibly annoying weapon limits/slow speed/regen health ( thanks Halo! ) mechanics. There are awesome games out there today as well, but if I took a timeline then the concentration of my favorite games would be approx 2-3 times higher in late 90s and early 00s than today. Thief, System Shock 2, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Half Life, Duke Nukem 3d, Quake, Serious Sam, Abe's Odyssey, Max Payne 1 & 2, just some of favorites from the 96-03. My favorites from 2010-2017 would be Bloodborne, Witcher, Hotline Miami. This isn't nostalgia either, I only got around to playing stuff like Thief, SS2 and Quake quite recently.

It's definitely a father of MODERN stealth genre. And it used not just shadow, but sound too.

I played it over and over for years at expert level. Loved it. I especially liked the stealth aspect because I could set my own pace and come out of the shadows at will. FPS's are typically a run in, kill everything that moves at a caffeine induced rage pace that would scare the Trickster into a sobbing little girl. This was a refreshing change. Doom and Quake were fun for a while, but Thief: The Dark Project was a much more relaxing environment where you felt more in control. Eventually I would try subduing every soul in the buildings and stacking them up in the vestibules just to see if I could. That was fun. Searching every room on every floor, whacking the unsuspecting and dragging them to the front one by one. Good times... Goood times.

i played the whole original trilogy and i have to agree with you, some levels (at least in the first two games) are ENDLESS! i had to use the "skip level" key combo on the catacombs when i realized i walked in circles for TWO HOURS! but nonetheless, they are great games and i loved to complete them without killing anyone to the point of restarting from a quick save multiple times just to knock out a bunch of guards :D

A great review of a very great game! I remember reading some of the first tests in computer game magazines back then... later i bought this game within a game-compilation box and was not disappointed. They did an amazing work on the audio system, that you really can tell where the enemy is coming from. After Half-Life the best game from 1998.

Its 2020 and after being in lockdown for what feels like forever I found myself wandering back to some of my old game titles. And all I can say is wow. I had forgotten just how engaging this game is. Especially with some of the fan mods installed which improve graphics etc. Loved every minute of it and feel sad that there has never been a modern continuation of the story. And yes I know there was a reboot but it was just the same.

The dark foreboding atmosphere mixed with the supernatural creeps lurking around in a first-person perspective would scare the crap out of me. That mixed with the fact that I'm about as stealthy as a freight train means that I don't think Thief is a game for me, LOL!

Holy shit, I just noticed that when Garrett swings the melee weapons, the animation is almost (if not actually) identical to when Soldier G65434-2 from System Shock 2 swings the Wrench! And when the guards swing their swords, the animation is the same as when the Hybrids swing their lead pipes! I know both games run on the Dark engine, but that's still cool to see!

Great review Clint! I really forgot how ahead of the curve this game was compared to others around at the time, minus Metal Gear Solid...but that was based on "tactical espionage" and not so much pure stealth. However with that said, I can't tell if I'm excited or rather burnt out on the fact that a new Thief game is coming out very soon. I've heard "developer hell" rumors for a while now and Ubisoft pushing the game back originally because they weren't impressed with what they saw. This could be a mixed bag because on one hand we have the older history of Ubisoft releasing sub-par games, but lately they've been great at publishing some fantastic titles like Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell Blacklist, AC4, Farcry 3 and so on and on. So it could be a good thing as they've been showing us that they only want to release quality content under their name. However, making a good Thief game isn't my worries...It's that it'll be a Thief game WORTHY of it's predecessors name sake. Which was all about innovation and ground breaking features. That and it comes out at a time where it could get lost in the shuffle of other big games coming out like the new Castlevania, Metal Gear, Dark Souls 2, Elder Scrolls, Titanfall, etc. Meaning it could take a hit in sales regardless if it's great, which means it's likely that no sequel will be made. Sigh. Nerd worries. Either way, FUCK the world...Dark Souls 2 is upon us!
