Burgess Meredith who plays Grandpa Gustafson is a very well know very talented & much loved actor of the older generation. Us older folks remembering him as the Penguin in the Batman TV series. & As you noticed, his one liners were non-stop, which caused delays in production because the other actors & crew couldn't stop laughing.

Jack Lemmon had another movie with another icon. Icon was James Garner. Movie is My Fellow Americans. Garner starred in a lot of movies and TV in his career. His well-known acting was Maverick and in TV as Jim Rockford in Rockford Files. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I loved Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. The Odd Couple is their classic, unbeatable comedy. They also did a sequel to Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men and it's terrific too. From what I remember, they also did a film after that called Out To Sea, which is pretty funny. This is definitely a rabbit hole you want to go down. Burgess Meredith is the true star of these movies as Jack Lemmon's dad. This movie is very 90s. Very raunchy. Ann Margret was a huge star in the 1960s and 70s as a sex symbol, so seeing her as a horny but intelligent and sophisticated, middle aged woman is really hilarious. She's basically been playing this kind of character her own life. You'll want to check out the sequel. Sophia Loren, another famous, glamorous actress from the 60s, is in it as well and she's great too.

Then old men style is great. The sequel is great. But if you watch the TV show The Odd Couple (or the movie), it's pretty much the same two actors doing the same antagonistic/friendly banter with a different style/setting (one a neat freak, the other a slob, together as roommates). They did this duo performance for decades in different settings, and it never got old.

I grew up watching this movie and had the privilege of seeing my grandfather and all of his friends interact with each other. They would've been the same way with each other if they were arguing about the same thing. I honestly believe a lot of women just don't understand men. In the same way we don't understand women. But I do think this movie uses humor in the best way. Men don't show emotions in the same way as women but we're not heartless, I love how when the man is having a heart attack his best friend still says"Don't die on me you old fool". This s movie is a masterpiece.

The best part is that Burgess Meredith improved many of his lines, as you can see at the end of the movie with all the outtakes. This series is my favorite of his. This is another series I've owned on every major format they have put out. Jack and Walter may be the stars, but Burgess is he heart of the whole series. I'm sure someone mentioned it, but Micky dies in Rocky III in 1982. Burgess is 11 years older in this film. 😜

The sequel "Grumpier Old Men" is pretty cute and Burgess has more exposure in it. They are both cute. To see a much younger Burgess you should catch some of the Batman tv show. He played the part of "The Penguin". He was also in a serious vein in the 1965 John Wayne movie "Harms Way" Walter Matheau and Jack Lemon were in several comedies like "The Odd Couple" and Matheau was pretty good in the obscure 1994 comedy "IQ" and the 1988 comedy "The Couch Trip". Yeah if you girls want more Grandpa Gustafson, watch the sequel 'Grumpier Old Men'.. He's even funnier in it, he goes after him a lady friend & he has a full story arc in it. I love the sequel.. It's definitely worth the watch..❤

What a great movie! You know, there’s a sequel “Grumpier Old Men” that was hilarious. And Walter Matthau was in a great comedy spy movie called “Hop Scotch” about a retiring CIA agent writing a tell-all book.

I love the reactions to Ann-Margaret 😂 Definitely check some of her films out. She was once called the female Elvis because of her voice and stage presence. Viva Las Vegas, and the film Tommy (made by the rock band The Who) are two great films where she gets to show off.
