Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were in 10 films together during their careers and became best friends so it’s obvious the chemistry is there as they riff off one another. To see another great movie they co-starred in PLEASE check out “The Odd Couple” from 1968. It’s a classic!

Grumpy Old Men is one of my favorite movies but in all honesty I think the second one "Grumpier Old Men" is better than the first one. The acting chemistry between Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau is legendary. Both are class acts. Then you cast a woman with the class and sex appeal of Ann-Margret making it even better. That woman is like a fine wine. But of course who cannot talk about the comedy of Burgess Meredith in this film? He played the father perfectly. Honestly, the entire cast is a roll call of shining stars.

Actually, the rolling in the snow after being in the sauna is a real thing, we also do it sitting in hot tubs. The shock going from hot to cold and back again is therapeutic. So she wasn't being dramatic or showing off... she was just reacting to the shocking cold. EDIT: Funny enough... that is Micky from "Rocky" (Burgess Meredith).

whats most amazing is that Burgess Meridith Ad-Libbed all the lines in the scene thats why Jack Lemmon looks so surprised cause he didn't know what line Burgess Merideth was going to say next haha, most were a little to dirty for what the movie was rated for so they showed them in out takes at the end of the movie and i am sure glad they did cause they were hilarious, it shows what an old school actor could do and many of the greats like Burgess Merideth could do with Ad-Libbimg lines and made him such a great actor, my first memory of seeing him act was in the 1969 movie and then tv series Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward as the Penguin, R I P Burgess Merideth you are missed.

Thanks you two for giving a grumpy old grandpa a good laugh watching this movie. The only person in the world, my father, who is in his nineties. Called me and wished me happy Thanksgiving. Neither of my brothers, nor my daughter, granddaughter, or daughter in law even remembered me this year. They all have busy lives and I lost my wife three years ago. I live alone and KZbin and Facebook are most of my daily social interactions except for the three times a month that I go into town to buy groceries and fill my water jugs. Other than that. It's just me, my dog and my KZbin family. I always look forward to your videos. So when I saw that y'all uploaded a movie reaction today I was very happy and it's one of the better movies that you two have done lately. So I had my Banquet Turkey TV dinner and the one beer I saved and then enjoyed watching y'all react to the movie. Believe it or not. You two made this lonely thanksgiving just a little less lonely. Thank you both! ♥️

I am sorry that you were alone this year. I am glad that you DID get a phone call & were remembered by your father. That was nice. I also find it nice to be able to turn to my favourite KZbinrs for their nice "company" & reactions. It does make you feel like they are there with you. I think that next year you should take charge of the holiday (& any others) for yourself! Make a point of calling your various family members YOURSELF & not wait for them to make the 1st move that may not come. That way you WILL get the conversation, even if only for a few minutes for each case. Maybe you know some other people who might also be alone at the holidays? It certainly is not uncommon at all unfortunately. Do your best to make it happy & don't leave it to circumstances, as we all know, circumstances don't always work out in our favour! I don't know if it's possible for you, but if you have friends not too far away, or ones that could stay overnight/for the weekend, could YOU have a get together - even with neighbours & others you know without family near? If you can't cook, maybe the bunch of you could come up with a sort of plan on how to have a potluck with (semi) holiday foods (as you did alone - but maybe a little better ie. someone buys turkey sausage & cuts it into chunks & mixes it with a few boxes of stuffing & some canned cranberry sauce (heated of course) for on top. Someone buys a pumpkin pie & ice cream or whipped cream. Maybe someone brings apple cider & bread rolls. Then there are bunches of salads in a bag these days with the salad dressing packets & toppings included. They are a little more expensive, but maybe okay for a special occasion. I don't know if you have Campbell's - Gardenay soups where you live. They are sold in the tetra cartons next to canned soups & they have a really good squash soup variety. These are just suggestions to think about. If nobody is making something better for you (& it is important for you especially), then maybe work at it (& be creative if you have to) to make it good for yourself! (Even if the best you can do is watching your favourite KZbinrs watch a movie you have "saved" for the day & eating an extra special treat for yourself that day in food or dessert form [or both! - it IS the holiday after all!].) I know that you did do this to the best of your ability this year, but if you start planning now (for Easter if you celebrate & then for the others far in advance, maybe each year could be even a little bit nicer than the last. If money is tough, you might even be able to start saving literally just a dollar or 2 a week or so to have a bit more for your holidays to treat yourself a little extra more.) I hope you don't mind my suggestions & think that I am being too intrusive. I DO know what it can be like! When you see this note, it will be in 2024 - so Happy Belated New Year (by a few days)! I hope that this year will turn around for you & be a lot better & be the start of much better times ahead. Take care. 🙂

1) It is interesting that John and Max's friendship was torn apart by a woman who came between them and stayed apart until a woman came and drew them back together". 2) Sitting in the sauna and then running and jumping, usually into a snow bank, is a Finnish tradition; I was so surprised to see it added in this movie; they really did an excellent job building the characters and representing small-town Minnesota in this movie. 3) Nearly every lake in Minnesota, which is called the "land of 10,000 lakes", is encrusted with ice houses from when the ice is thick enough to be safe to when it gets too thin in the spring. The same people set up their shanties on the same lakes every year, so it's like a little community all its own out on the ice. 4) I'll echo everyone else here and say you must watch the sequel "Grumpier old Men"; it is just as good and just as Minnesota (though less cold looking).

The thing about Minnesota Winters and that fish is, things freeze solid. That fish would need to un-freeze, just like pulling it out of the refrigerator's freezer. I live about 20 minutes from where they partial made this in Wabasha, MN.

I have heard good things about Wabasha. I have heard as small towns go, the people are pretty friendly. I don't know how they would be with people like me...but ever since this film came out back in 93...I have kind of wanted to live there. I love to fish and it just seems like a fun community while being small enough to feel relatively safe.

They come back with another one "Grumpier Old Men", But Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon are good friends and have done several movies together. "Out to Sea" where Walter's character signs them up to work on a cruise ship. To answer your question about snow in Minnesota, I’d say yes, for the most part, it is like this every winter. It was filmed in Minnesota too, btw. But what I’ve found living here for the last 13 years or so, once the snow starts falling and sticking, which can be as early as October, it just stays and piles on and piles on until about April. Some winters are worse than others, but I can’t remember a winter that I’ve been here that I didn’t have piles of snow next to my sidewalk or driveway, several feet high, all winter long.

Get another load of great Grandpa Gustafson outtakes in Grumpier Old Men! Besides Mickey in Rocky, Burgess Meredith was also the first actor to play Batman's Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot, a couple decades before Danny DeVito. His was the more dapper version, waddling around with a top hat and monocle, and he remains a favorite among old Batman fans. You might have also seen him in one of the most famous episodes of Twilight Zone. He was Henry Bemis, the unfortunate bookworm who survived a nuclear holocaust. His career goes back much further than that: he starred in an early classic version of Of Mice and Men, and appeared in almost every genre possible, from drama to westerns to war films. Of course, just about every actor in this movie was a legend in some way or another. Buck Henry, who played the villain, was co-creator of Get Smart (with Mel Brooks) as well as a screenwriter and actor in lots of memorable films.

Great choice for a movie to watch and react to. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are one of my favorite comedy teams. I have been an admirer of both of their films as a pair and individually. They don't make them quite as funny as these two any more. One of their films that you both need to check out is a film called "Out To Sea" which came out in 1997. I guarantee that you would both enjoy it as much as the "Grumpy Old Men" movie and its sequel. The end credits to all of these movies each contain some hilarious outtakes. 😎👍😁

One of the things that a lot of people miss in this movie is how John was a public school teacher for, what, 36 years(?), and John can’t even afford to live in the house any more in retirement. Happy Thanksgiving guys!! First , the song you were hearing a few times, singing " I am too sexy" is an actual song called I'm too Sexy, by a group called Right Said Fred, I think it came out about 1991. It was a novelty song, silly, but a lot of fun and was a huge hit!! Next, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon are screen legends, they both starred in THE ODD COUPLE, and Jack starred in a 1979 movie called THE CHINA SYNDROME about a potential accident in a nuclear power plant, the film co stars a very young Michael Douglas, and I agree with other commenters that Jack was like the Tom Hanks of his time, playing great everyman characters.

Very happy y'all enjoyed it too!! :D Yeah, putz is just another way of saying dummy or stupid. The dad was played by the same actor who played Mickey in Rocky. If you'd like to see these two as grumpy young men, you can watch them in one of their first movies together "The Odd Couple" from 1968 (playing different characters, but it's a great movie). "Grumpier Old Men" is another wonderful movie they did together in their golden years. So glad you've finally experienced the joy of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau together!
