I think what she is trying to do is clear some of the social debt that has been built up over the last 40 years. The social debt has been costing this country more than anything else, including brexit which was a symptom of the social debt. We need to start recovering the country with some basic foundations. The Laffer curve is true in a trivial sense. However, the right typically presents it as though reducing taxes _always_ improves economic performance, and that is demonstrably untrue. Just ask the people in Kansas who unfortunately performed a live experiment a few years ago.

Does James honestly think that the treasury really sees the smoking tax as a move towards helping people stop smoking as opposed to a cynical effort to capitalise on people being addicted. Particularly the 10% + inflation on rolling tobacco; traditionally the cheapest way to feed a smoking habit for most working class smokers. That's not a responsible attempt to stop smoking, more working class poor people smoke than the wealthy, most of them smoke rolling tobacco. It's a tax on the poor! If they stop, water tax or breathing tax?
