at 2:52 LBJ says we should get out of Vietnam. So why did he sign NSAM 263 escalating the war? To make money for Bell Hellicoptor who he had stock in.

@@karenbitter8857 No, they were not. They were heavily involved though so this is not a blanket statement.

For @~?£'s sake no. He most definitely wanted out of Vietnam. No-one wanted in, the only reason he got involved was the belief in Domino theory, which ended up being true in a minimal scale, in South-East Asia, American prestige, how it would look if America whimpered in the face of a backwater country and the impact it would have in confidence to other American allies. The whole point why the American people hated the government was because they lied throughout saying they can win the war. Other mistakes was keeping General Westmoreland in charge.

The real question is why didnt lbj fire mcgeorge bundy and McNamara. LBJ is openly telling his national security advisor he wants better options and that he doesn't trust the thoroughness of the policy process bundy was in charge of (thats why he is asking for a review from somebody not connected to the administration) instead of doing his job bundy is pushing back. LBJ should have bit the political bullet and fired bundy. (He was keeping bunddy around because he was a big part of the Kennedy Harvard crowd and lbj was in the midst of trying to solidify for his reelect and he knew if he pushed bundy out he would be free to join bobby Kennedys political machine.)

LBJ is speaking with McGeorge Bundy not Charles Colson. You can find comprehensive info at the University of Virginia Miller Center regarding a very large number of audio recordings by LBJ.
