In my personal opinion there is no such thing as too much drag, i fish a penn intl 130 at 60lbs strike drag. Its not for plinking around for 5'-6' blk tips, its for pulling up giant hammers, bulls, and tigers in boca grande pass, if you have ever fished in the pass you would know the enormous amount of current that flows through there. Its tough fishing but a hell of a battle at hook-up!

Thanks man, Jamaica Beach is where we got our first big shark. Whenever we are retrieving our line we use our thumbs to guide the line back and forth like a level wind; after doing it enough it becomes second nature.

Just picked up an 80/2 130 hollow core to 130 mono on a gator rod. Broomstick home run drop rig. Looking for some 50s for shorter drops. Wish the clickers were louder on these , my only complaints.
@ArcadianWarrior3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, the clickers are frustrating, especially if you get a slow pickup.

They're definitely something worth saving up for, kind of a good middle ground between the senators and the more powerful 130 class or 100+ drag reels. Senators are still some beast though man, I think that 90% of the biggest land based sharks have been caught on them :]

I have 3 and fixing to get a fourth one so far ive got a 8 foot bull on 50 lb mono when i first bought the 50 between the fish and the drag the rod couldnt handle the pressure i will always choose avet and im getting a rod rebuilt from barret rods he dose amazing work

They are fantastic reels man, and I hope that we get an 8ft Bull this year, once they get to that size they're some beast. And I agree, I bought a Barrett rod off of someone and although I haven't caught a fish on it yet I love it after testing it out with the drag and everything.

Exactly. 30lbs of drag on the typical big game reel is totally fine for most fish that you'll catch. However, I want to have all the power that I can have when a true monster comes along; no reason to be unprepared. Plus, we practice catch and release. So I'd rather horse in an 8ft shark and have it swim off full of energy then fight it for an hour and have to deal with a hard release.

So far I haven't noticed any issues of fading, it seems to be just fine. At the same time, we've only had it for a little over a year. As for comparison, I just personally like Avets more because all of the pieces used to make the reel are metal. I think the internationals may have some rubber parts. Also, Tiagra are supposed to be decent, but I don't like that they're made in China. Plus, Avets put out more drag than both of them, and I love the Avet handle.

Thanks for your feedback, tight lines
@ArcadianWarrior11 жыл бұрын
The Tiagras have really big arbors from what I remember, so they fit a little less than the two. The specs online are really weird though, so I think it depends on how tight you spool it. I think that the International holds the most line, Avet holds the second most, and Tiagra holds the least. If you spool your line really tight though than they're all going to be able to hold a lot, I think that all of the 80w have a little less line capacity than a Penn 12/0.

100lb test minimum. It all depends on where you're fishing too. If there are a lot of reefs or crab traps in the area to get cut off on I'd say fish braid backing with a 200lb topshot. Where we fish though, down in Texas, cut offs aren't a big deal, so 100-130lb test is ideal. It also depends on the drops you plan on making. If you plan on making short drops (100-300 yards) you only need a minimum 800 yards of line. If you make 500 yard drops you need a minimum of at least 1200 yards of line.

I got my biggest one last weekend a 9 5 and i estimated it to be around 450 lbs on my ex 50 filled up of 80 lb braid and 100 lb mono

Avet, Shimano and Penn all make good shark reels; it's just a matter of personal preference over the production quality and drag power.

Dude, I really like this upload. I live in Jamaica Beach and am just starting to surf fish. I bought 2 Avet reels and looking for rods. Also use regular baitcast not these big ones. How do you distribute the line when retreiving?
@ArcadianWarrior11 жыл бұрын
You can get an Avet 80w through sharkoutlet . com. For rods, you can get them custom made from various rod builders. The rod I currently own is a Barrett Rod made by Peter Barrett. Or tackle stores (online too) for any place that sells fishing gear to order a rod if they don't have one close to you. You can buy line at any tackle shop. If you want an entire setup without buying everything separately you'd probably need to go to a tackle store with this kind of gear to set you up something.

What's the gold anodising like? I've heard it can face? Any other feedback on them comparing to tiagras or inters?

Is there much different in size compared to the tiagras or inters? Bigger or smaller etc? No one really stocks these in Australia so it's hard to judge...

Why do you put mono after the braided line? Can you just use 100 lbs braided power pro line
@ArcadianWarrior4 жыл бұрын
Abrasion resistance. 130-200 pound mono has a better chance of lasting while rubbing against all the sandbars hidden in the water than braid. Plus, if you have lighter braid with a heavy mono topshot, you can put more pressure on the fish once you get to your mono topshot.

@@ArcadianWarrior ok thank you...i have never shark fish. I do want to start to shark fishing but not sure what reels to get. I do like the reels you have . Thinking of what i should get.
@ArcadianWarrior4 жыл бұрын
@@torress1976 no problem! And depending on where you shark fish you might not need a reel this big. Honestly, every shark I've caught so far could have been landed on an Avet 50w, which is a size smaller than the ones in this video.

@@ArcadianWarrior yeah u have a very nice setup..i was looking and a penn senator but not sure ..i kind of like the 1 u all have

@@torress1976 senators are also a great choice and they've been proven and tested over time; the lever drag reels like Avet are just way more convenient! I actually have a video called "Star Drag vs Lever Drag Reels" that compares the avet and senator side by side that you can check out to help you decide.

so you use Dacron as your top shot? Did I hear that correctly? I also use Dacron instead of mono and everyone freaks out. I never in 17 years had a issue yet?
@ArcadianWarrior9 жыл бұрын
leo renner Sorry for the late response, but I used to use Dacron as a topshot. Now, I prefer mono, however, the way that I see it is that all the shark fisherman from the 70s, 80s and 90s, the ones who have caught the biggest sharks, used Dacron; so as far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with it.
