Would have been smarter if he wore a helmet and he was 100% secure to the tower at all times which he’s not. Video is missing a lot of safety equipment especially the most important is helmet, leather gloves or gloves and a Y or V line lanyard. Lineman’s belt is only good if you go through a rung but to move several feet up or down and being attached 100% is to have the Y or V lanyard. If he slips or has a medical condition he comes down the tower smashing his face on every rung. Ground person should wear a helmet in case something falls, safety glasses and gloves. Knowing your location and a safety plan where to meet emergency personnel in case of an emergency. The gin pole is nice. But safety should NOT be taken lightly and know one needs to copy your build because of all the missing items.

The comments are spot on. 100% contact with the tower is a must! In case of a fall you need to be wearing a helmet to prevent head injury. Also , the climbing belt should be secured to each thigh to insure the tower worker will not be able to slide out.

He had his lanyards, why not use them?

Although you keep stressing safety, he does not use his fall protection device! They are the two straps with hooks dangling behind him. The linemans rope does nothing to prevent a fall. The fall protection is what is needed to be always connected to the tower.

I also thought proper procedure was to climb without be saddled with tools and supplies, instead letting the ground crew hoist those up once the climber is in position?

Yeah, you should always be 100% attached to the tower.

36" depth? No rebar? Not even close. You have 100% exposure all around. What are you putting on top a 2m whip? Would not be caught dead climbing that. My 48' tower has engineered 8' deep 4' diameter hole, rebar cage and just over 4 yards of concrete. Rated for 20 sq. ft wind load @100mph and a K factor rating of around 2200Ft. lbs. This is scary...

Nice work, but he’s not using his leg straps or the fall protection hooks… Not safe at all!

3 points of contact is good but useless if not connected to tower in case of a missed step, lineman’s belt will slide to the bottom with the climber.

Back in the day (4 decades ago!), I used to make one turn around the leg opposite of me to ensure that the belt would not allow me to fall more than about six inches. That was long before OSHA was making up new rules.

Nice showing a tower raised however, he has multiple safety violations. 1. No hard hat, 2. No use of safety lanyards, 3. Ground persons with no hard hats. If OSHA had seen this it would have been a $42,000 fine. Nothing safe about how this was done.

Definitely needs two large climb rated carbiner style clips, to actually clip to the tower structure, just in case of a fall.

That HDBX 48 free standing calls for 8 yards to give it a 90 MPH rating with a inch of ice on it . I have one . And just 4 years ago I put up the HDBX 85 foot it went to 10 yards . For the same loading .

I’ve got one (gently used) on the ground. I’m about ready to put it up. Q: How solid did it feel when you had all rings up? Why not put antenna on at same time you set up tower? Will you be making a video on grounding the tower and shack? What else do you plan on putting on this tower?

Guys Rhône specs for the HDBX 48. 8 yards concrete ! Did you all guy that tower ? Plus those home made stubs only have 2 bolts on each leg factory 3 I do hope there is nothing valuable around the foot print of that tower . I had one then got a HDBX 85 it went to 10 yards of Crete . They if you contact them will send you specs for the base and the stubs are just $100 I did that and put a lot of steel in mine all welded to the stubs it rated at 90MPH constant wind with a inch of ice build up . I just have one fm transmitter antenna and 3 microwave 16 inch drums on it for the internet. Nothing close to the 5 square foot load to that spec . That and I hope he did not ground it from the bottom of the home made stubs that will cause if hit a good lighting strike will blow the concrete to smithereens !

I know all tower workers have their own safety methods but the people who have done tower work for us in the past will lower their tool / supply bag to the ground so it's not in their way when descending. They also have a riggers pulley that they will attach to the top section to lower the gin pole to the ground while they remain at the top. When the pole is down they remove the pulley and take their time returning to the ground. Kinda glad I don’t get involved with this any more, too old for climbing and bad knees.

Very great video! Always nice to see people doing what they are the best at. LCARA is very lucky to have a great professional tower climber. And Brian, I think instead of Hawaiian shirts, next time he should come wearing a suit. And to all the ones who are getting all wound up about his safety equipment, or as you people say lack of, he’s been at this since he was 5 years old

Yep , I don’t think Ken will be with us much longer! I was nervous because I know how little concrete there is in the ground. When it pisses down rain for several days and the ground becomes super soft, over she may tumble!
