An 8 day trip to Georges Banks fishing for sword fish. Harpooning sword fish is an old method used when the fish are sunning themselves in the warmer top water. This trip was a good trip, calm waters, warm breeze, and lots of ocean life. Hope you enjoy.
If you feel generous and love to help others out my patreon is / iflpyro every little bit helps me get out and capture more of the world. Thank You.

I thought the same thing but I guess its not that common. Sharks avoid swordfish out of fear of injury from what I was told by the fisherman. They also watch the buoy on radar for when it stops moving minimizing the time they just float around.

why are the marlin at the surface, they usually aren't this high up in the water, right?

Swordfish feed in cold waters but sun themselves in the warm sun to gain energy for the hunt.

and i thought sword fish were caught in deep - very deep water as seen in other YT videos.

tinynoggin they are,but in warmer weather they come Indore to feed on all the bait.fish & after they gorge themselves they skim the surface digesting ,shitting & sleeping . Not paying as much attention to their surroundings as they usually do & it was much easier to stick. That was 40 years ago & nobody that I've heard about I catching Swordfish inshore anymore. The fishery was abhsed,overdosed & the by-catch was horrendous.Last trip I went every swordfish we caught was a tiny pup,a baby PLUS the # of sea turtles & sharks,monsters who died,it was criminal,!! Rather it should have been. Almost the entire commercial fishing industry needs to be shut down now world wide.There will be NO FISH left in 12 years if it isn't stopped!!!!

Andrew Porter Andrew Porter the gill netting part of the commercial sword-fishery is what did most harm to these fish, as well as to other species not targeted but ultimately effected. These fish mature in about 4-5 years with a total lifespan of 12-15, and each time they spawn produce millions of eggs. The restrictions put on the gill net fishery has helped these fish immensely and on the harpoon side of things, doesn’t necessarily hurt the overall population, taking them one by one. According to some tag and track research, most of these fish spend about 10% of their time basking(where they can be taken by harpooners) think about what lies below.

Noah Nolten gill nets are pretty bad but not as bad as draggers and trawlers. They clean the ocean of EVERYTHING, even ground structure. Also its one of my dreams to know what truly lies beneath the waves.

where the cold water from the Labrador meets the warm waters of the Gulf. They sun themselves in the warm waters and feed in the deep cold water. Other than that, it was extremely impressive to see these guys spot the fins sometimes over 2 miles out.

they do, the one that was "flapping" around did so for 8 hours after they removed the head and cleaned it. I believe the salt from the water makes the nerves react. The fish are typically dead when they bring them on board, most of the time.

I think The detachable tip is why a few got away, I'm not sure, but I bet they didn't live, a not detachable tip often kills better
@lcarus42
@lcarus42 7 жыл бұрын
The tip detaches but is tied to a long rope with a few buoys and weights. Every fish they harpooned in this video they landed. Not sure what your experience is but, a non detachable tip is about as deadly as any other tip of similar style. However the pole will almost always pull the tip out of the fish causing you to lose the fish..

Even if the dart doesn’t go all the way through if that thing turns sideways, it’s most likely not coming out, just gonna cause the fish more pain and more damage
