Usually you would have measured the retention curve and then you would use the data in a simulation. It is possible to analyze experimental data and estimate the retention curve using inversion.

Hi Greta, I use Hydrus 1D in my class and the video was made for the class. For 3D problems in partially saturated flow, I generally use Comsol Multiphysics. I also use Comsol for many other types of problems, so I have ready access and am familiar with it. That's why I use it, not because it is necessarily better than Hydrus 3D. Nevertheless, the end result is that I have not pursued using Hydrus 3D. Larry
