You should never call on students on the spot like that! What if they cannot read? Then what? You’ve embarrassed the hell out of them! If time- you should ask the student beforehand if they feel comfortable reading in front of the entire class.

I appreciate your concern for your students. If you were just getting to know them, you might need to be more cautious but once you know your class, calling on students by name is an important tool - especially as you are watching them and perceiving how they are processing your question . Many times you will see that a student has something to say and an invitation to share will bless the student and the class. This can also help balance opportunities to speak since there will be those that can dominate responses. Wisely used, this is an important skill for a teacher to learn.

Brother Fullmer great point! I’m used to working with special needs students. This makes a lot of sense when used a general Ed setting! Love your channel!
