Most moving film ever - every sister kept her vow of martyrdom, and one was left to restore Carmel, which lives today, and in the first, Sister Gabrielle, I saw my own mother. At least, they were left with the white cloak of purity. Alida Valli was magnificent.

Churches tarted losing their sway around WW1. Few educated even bother with the ritual- they kno there aint nothing but this toilet of a Society and the beautiful but spoiled planet. Reincarnation makes more sense than anything in te old biblio /Peeps just ain't got time for words and emptiness ,meaningless rhetoric .

This is quite fascinating to me, a fan of Francis Poulenc's opera on this subject. The opera's libretto trims some material from the original stage play based on George Brenanos's rejected cinematic treatment (he passed in 1948), in turn based on a German novel from the 1930s that invents the character of Blanche (the other sisters being historically verified). This movie's script rewrites some scenes and adds new material seemingly consistent with the historical record. Elsewhere on KZbin is a French TV movie from 1984 that adheres more consistently to the Brenanos text. A colossal legal complication arose during the original production of Poulenc's opera, premiered in 1957, because multiple people had been started adapting the Brenanos stage play unbeknownst to each other. Legal proceedings ensued, and my copy of the piano-vocal score bears a bizarre text attribution to no fewer than FIVE persons, including the German novelist who gave her royalties to the survivors of Brenanos. One English-language version of the opera (which Poulenc intended to be performed in translation for foreign audiences, though it's now most often done in French) calls itself "The Carmelites." I thought that was odd until I read that when Brenanos drafted his screenplay he wrote "Dialogue des Carmelites" on the cover, which in French movie jargon literally means Script for 'The Carmelites.' Thanks for posting this version with subtitles, conveying the undeniable richness of the resulting script, however manipulated.

Hello! The Carmelite Order is a Catholic mendicant order for men and women. It was founded in the 12th century on Mount Carmel, but the order considers the prophet Elijah from the Old Testament as its founder. Discalced Carmelites come from a reformed order, and they're distinguished by the sandals they wear.
