As a Bulgarian, it's truly unbelievable to me that people like our folk music. I grew up thinking it was too old fashioned and boring, because that's what kids my age were saying. So thank you for reminding me of the beauty of it

As a Hungarian I think of Hungarian folk music the same way. Apparently what it boils down to is that we understand the lyrics in our own language, and since it is indeed old school we don't like it so much. With this song in particular though Parasite Eve definitely added to its popularity.
@Tomogeny2 жыл бұрын
Nah It's absolutely incredible. The dynamics and interplay of their voices is just on another level. Tonal quality is really unique and works so well for this kinda choir. I love how they make their voices so 'thin', which makes them mix together incredibly well, almost sounding like a hurdy-gurdy. The joy and skill these ladies have radiates from their singing and most of all, the melodies are absolutely incredible. This has been one of my favorite songs for years now and I still return to it at least once a month. I feel like Bulgarian folk has cracked the code for music that you feel in your bones and its absolutely a cultural gem of this world that must never be lost. Thank you Bulgarians for making such incredible music!

Probably because I'm from the Balkans, I feel this on a whole different level. Bulgaria has many mountains, same like Bosnia (where I'm from) and these choirs wouldn't have been what they are if it weren't for the mountain ranges that allowed for highlander culture to develop over the centuries. Which is why you'll discover so many old songs tell tales of mountains and highlanders in this fashion. Bulgarian choirs are one of the highest peaks of music in human history and I'm so grateful that KEXP recorded this and shared with everyone.

The song is about this bachelor gradpa who cheekily put his 'kalpak' (an old timey hairy hat) to the side and went to the village. The name of the album includes "Survival Horror." a very popular game genre. The name of the song is a game reference, they collabed with a mostly gaming producer and Oli said he spent most of the quarentine gaming... Look up the game Alone In The Dark 5's soundtrack. The only thing is that the games Oli has referenced before are very popular and beloved, Alone In The Dark as a franchise is popular and beloved but AitD5 sucks and is not very popular... so it would be a very obscure reference. Still the game sucks but its soundtrack is one of the best imo.
