I think the idea to not focus on the grammar per se, is a really smart one. I doubt native speakers are thinking in real-time about whether they are about to reference a direct or indirect object I have to assume it's just pretty natural from the years of hearing it and, like you said, just knowing which pronouns tend to go with which verbs. I found this video to be pretty helpful. The idea that I was going to have to be conscious about whether I was about to use a d.o or i.o was troubling but this kinda put me at ease a little bit. Thanks!

Thanks Michael for the lesson, I have had many issues with direct and indirect object's mainly identifying which is which in conversation at speed. I have learned the grammar rules blah blah! and I have done many lessons and discussion with my one to one teacher but always, I am left still confused, however this time no. You have somehow found a really easy way to put the formula across that sticks and the trick with linking essential LE linked verbs is a gem. It's the first time I have heard of learning use of LE in this - grammar free way. Saludos Steve

This is very helpful. I didn’t even know how to ask the question to find out the answer. But now I get it and in fact, Spanish does this better than English I think
@noelleggett53682 ай бұрын
It is much easier to understand it if you include a direct object and the preposition ‘to’ in the English. (And then, you need to also learn the other Spanish indirect object pronoun ‘se’ (which complicates things a little - but that’s Spanish for you!) Ella le dio una manzana. She gave him an apple. Ella se la dio. She gave it ‘to him’. Les enseñó español. He taught them Spanish. Se lo enseñó. He taught it ‘to them’. Ella le dijo un secreto. She told him a secret. Ella se lo dijo. She told it ‘to him’ The concept of the indirect object is easier when you can rephrase the sentence with the preposition ‘to’ - and in Spanish, the preposition ‘a’ is used with indirect noun objects (and pronouns in certain cases.) ‘A Juan le gustan las manzanas’ ‘Apples are pleasing to Juan.’ Juan likes apples. ‘Le gustan las manzanas.’ Apples are pleasing to him. He likes apples. ‘A él le gustan.’ To him they are pleasing. He likes them.

I'm at the point in my studies, I just say all three and wait to be corrected. Maybe overtime I'll get it, but it takes too long to remember in the middle of a sentence while you are thinking.

Because in this case the person is indirect. One cannot “pegar alguien”, because the direct object is the hit.

@oraetlabora1922Ай бұрын
Yes.
@igornikonov96416 ай бұрын
That's funny actually. So le can be used for both musculin and feminine, add the fact that the Spanish typically don't use personal pronouns, and you will get that in a sentence like "he made a breakfast for her", it is actually not clear if a man or a woman made a breakfast, same as it is not clear for whom he or she made the breakfast😃. Must be quite confusing to speak Spanish
