Leach 2RIIs in Manhattan

From over 5 years ago, we first see a Western Star and later a Volvo working the evening commercial shift in New York City. Two beautiful trucks - thanks to the friendly drivers for all they do.

Just earlier today I was searching around for videos of nighttime commercial collection in NYC. I recall that article (some would call it a hit piece) that circulated a couple years ago that talked about how rushed these routes were, sending guys to open market stops all over town in trucks that were supposedly not always in the best shape, and that it would sometime take up to 12 hours to finish. Not sure how accurate all that was, though there was definitely one company that did all the wrong things and is no longer around. Just watching this it strikes me that they probably never bothered to wash the truck, if it only runs at night and no one looks at the truck twice anyway. Though it is offensively loud. I've never heard a PTO/hydro pump quite like that first one, almost sounds like the hydraulic pump you would hear on a stationary compactor or baler at a grocery store. it's pretty neat how there's this niche market for extremely heavy duty rear loaders in NYC and select parts of the Northeast that you won't find anywhere else, and that the major players in the industry actually devote the resources to develop specialized products just for them...makes for some pretty neat tourist destinations if you're into that sort of stuff

I would call each of those articles "hit pieces" but when pedestrians were being killed I suppose the company needed to clean up its act. What makes it a hit piece (to this day) is how its effect is slamming the entire industry of independent haulers, when you can see both crews in this video were not rushing or being unsafe. But I'm sorry to read you were offended by the loud noise of one or both of the trucks. That wasn't my intention sweet Andy. But I thought of that too, how the Western Star's pump did at times sound like an electric compactor running.

The NYC private haulers have always fascinated me. The amount of history behind it all is just as interesting as the trucks themselves. Curious as to why the haulers out there purchase the combinations they do. Both of these along with a lot of trucks out there are very unconventional combos. Nailed the inner city vibe too. Got any other NYC videos in your stockpile? Great work as always!

yeah I've got a few more to upload. I think a lot of their chassis and body purchase decisions come from tradition and what they're used to, what their competitors do. but in some cases a heavy spec truck is needed for how heavy, wet, and high volume the trash is there. lots of food waste I think. thanks for commenting!
