Bamford founded JCB in Rocester but today the company is the main reason why the local town, Uttoxeter, fairs better than many other rural towns in the UK. The company employs most of the town, I know this because I've lived there for 26 years. JCB looks after their employees as well; getting a job there guarantees a stable income for the rest of your life, the company is unionised and employees get generous benefits.

@jackx43114 ай бұрын
I can tell you the main reason why JCB has proved so successful in the long term - and I'm astonished this commentary failed to mention it. *EVERY share in JCB is owned by a member of the Bamford family.* If, therefore, they decide to invest a massive proportion of their net income in R & D, there are no external shareholders to demand that they use that money to pay out higher dividends on shares. This policy, which Joe Bamford adopted from the start, also makes them fireproof against the sort of hostile take-over suffered by Ferguson's, when other directors virtually sold the company out to the American company Massey behind Harry Ferguson's back. Inevitable result? A few years later, Massey closed the English side down and fired all the staff. A couple of other points which should ALSO have been made clear; JCB is now the second biggest company in the world for plant and machinery for agriculture, construction and materials handling - and the *BIGGEST in the world for back-hoe loaders!*

You're right about the Bamford approach to finance - much nearer the German and Japanese models. But you're slightly off about Ferguson - he was a good engineer but impossible to deal with and just annoyed everyone he needed to secure the tractor business. Which is why no company bore his name after about 1960.

JCB, I remember posing sat in a 3CX while I was at primary school for pictures with a crew and mechanic who was there, along with the rest of my class, teacher and headmaster who were lined up beside it. One reason was because they were impressed with how much I knew about them for a 7 year old which included enough to do the checks and operate it, but also because that particular machine was exactly my age at the time, one of the first off the line in 1985.

What you missed was Joseph (always known as Joe) who had been in the family business Bamfords Ltd (which made agricultural equipment) since 1935 in Uttoxeter, left the firm (1948) to start his own very successful excavator manufacturing company J.C. Bamford (Excavators) Ltd. The original Bamford Ltd continued until 1978. In November 1967, J.C. Bamford (Excavators) Ltd. made an offer for the company's whole share capital. The Board of Bamfords Ltd. reacted unfavourably to this bid, as J.C. Bamford (Excavators) Ltd. had failed to obtain sufficient acceptance from their shareholders which resulted in the bid being finally withdrawn.

I worked for two of their competitors and came across a number of ex-JCB employees who were almost burnt out nervous wrecks, whilst JCB's subcontractors often went under due to price pressure - the construction equipment industry is very much feast or famine.
