Leach Rear Loader Crushing Bulk Waste

So part of my Los Gatos adventure included this neat Leach Alpha-III on neighborhood cleanup. I started my hunt by landing on this thing that I saw peeking just below a hill. The driver told me that they do this a couple times a year so once again, I was fortunate that my instincts were right on the money yet again. The Optimizer's last month AND one of two clean-ups per year.
The driver was super friendly and made watching this truck a lot of fun. Especially while ducking and diving shrapnel shooting out from behind the packer. It was pretty gnarly how much stuff was shooting through the blade.

You must not have any scrappers in your area. About 75% of that stuff would have never made it to the truck in my area.

I have been very fortunate to find what I find. Most of the battle really is just putting yourself out there to see what you can find, and having a good sense to trust your instincts. I will confess, I had no idea this truck was working in the area, I just caught a blinky light out of the corner of my eye while driving and decided to go down that road to see what the heck it was. Much to my surprise, it was this truck!

Thoroughly entertaining video. Really gave off an old school rl feel with the packer speed. It was slow but not boring slow. Neat how you could really hear everything crushing. Also surprised that they sent a 1 man crew on this type of thing. Anyways, great video. Can't wait to see more again someday

I found it odd too that they only ran a one man crew. Seems very odd for a bulk route. I suppose they don't expect too many heavy things that a man can't schlep into the low hopper of this truck.

He agreed, but fortunately he didn't seem to mind being the only one on the route. Big stuff like the couches and chairs get called in, so he doesn't have to load them up on his own.

Awesome video! You seem to have a really nice camera as well, as the audio in this clip really stands out from the ordinary. The sound dynamics when the stuff breaks is almost like beeing there irl. Thumbs up!

Believe it or not, I'm just using an iPhone 6+ (the original big iPhone). This think is pretty much the only camera I've used since 2015. It's a remarkable camera. I think another reason why the sound is also so good is the fact it was quiet in the neighborhood and this truck was the only thing making noise. ;-)

That is indeed impressive. I hope my 6s performs that well! The quiet sorroundings probably contributes as well, at least combined with a good recording device. In many videos the cameras seem to compensate for loud transients by simply lowering the overall volume for a few seconds. Keep up the good work! :-)

Awesome video. Gotta love the leaches. Imo this route should not be a one man job. Makes the work faster and easier plus a more entertaining video on our end to have a helper.

I talked to the driver about that, he said they run the one man crew to save money. The really big stuff, like the couches at the end, they call in a flat bed with a tailgate to pick them up. That way nobody gets hurt.

Dearest Bill what you have found is actually an Alpha-III, the 2R's uppity little brother. A smaller hopper, smaller cylinders and lighter structure all around but good for some surprisingly heavy duty work, as you've shown here. Though judging by the cellulite/battle scars on the hopper hulk pickup is nearly outside its comfort zone. This one has a really nice speed to the packer, many of these Alphas are painfully slow. This one is no speed demon but a slightly slower blade makes for some fun to watch crushing action. Especially liked the angle at 11:05 and the "swamper's POV" at 13:15. Great find and great vid.

Your right about Alphas being slow I filmed one a year ago and that packer moved like a snail .

You are the RL grand master, sir George, thank you for the correction. I did enjoy getting the swamper's POV and proving what a hazardous job it can be. Look at all the shards of wood and plastic that shot out of the hopper when he was running the pack cycle. Holy cow!!!

Nice video Bill , BTW This is a Leach Alpha , I'm surprised they don't have a Leach 2RIII doing this , they have more crushing force with the blade. Also love the truck , I've always liked Acterras it's a shame they're not made anymore.

It is amazing how wasteful people can be. A vast majority of this stuff could have been dropped off at a Salvation Army or Goodwill or something... but nope. Off to the MRF and landfill it goes...

interesting hoe Cali requires that you have 50% diversion rate. Yet there was no scarp metal pick up for this clean up. because there was a good amount of metal in those stops.

Pretty soon I think it's going to be 70% or more. All this stuff I assume, gets sorted at the MRF. The SF Bay Area is pretty religious about recycling and saving the planet. I would be shocked to find out it all just gets sent to the landfill.

1st of all....I see a HUGE safety violation here, this guy shouldn't NEVER be working alone handling all this bulky waste !! I live in Nova Scotia Canada & I worked for my local garbage company part time for 7 years & it was ALWAYS 2 of us in these packers for this type of pickup. Just Saying.

You would be surprised how common it is out here to see one man jobs on bulk routes like this.
