I learn waay more from you in a real way than anyone else including some joker I paid at the local music shop. I WILL become a member of your site in a couple of paychecks. You definitely deserve to be paid for your brilliance in teaching. As a martial arts instructor, academic coach, and personal trainer, I value quality instruction that distills the information down to the concepts that translate into real life application. Great job!

One of the best explanations on how to begin soloing. I get frustrated learning ALL the scales, and he explains that concentrating on one scale and extending that one scale is the best way. The hardest part of soling is making a scale sound musical, instead of a boring repetitive scale lesson.

for some reason it's been so hard for me to grasp the concept of soloing and I've always struggled with it, but this just opened my eyes so much and is making me think of it in a different and more comprehensive way. thank you so much. can't wait to keep practicing this and get better

@MiniDaab The difference to major and minor pentatonic for the standard 1-4,1-3,1-3,1-3,1-4,1-4 is where the root of the scale is on the E strings. when the root is on the pointer finger it is the major pentatonic, but if you shift it to where the root is on the pinky finger it is minor. so every pentatonic is the Major of one scale and the minor of another. there are multiple patterns to the same scale to play it in different positions on the neck, the extension uses parts of the others

Great video Marty, and thanks for the Backing Tracks. The B minor is awesome to jam to. Maybe you could throw in a lesson on how to change scales throughout this backing track, and others. I think a lot of beginners get stuck in the same "Box". it would be great to move patterns through the song. Thankyou for all the great work.

The finale really amazed me, just perfection, knowing where the notes are on the fretboard without even looking at the left hand, from what I could tell anyways :p Maybe glanced down, but seemed majority just knew where notes were, and played perfect, no dead notes, heh

I like the way Marty teaches how to get sounds ( licks, scales, boxes ) without bogging down the lessons with overly explains theory. I think most students here are more interested in getying some immediate results in thier playing than understanding harmony. I think this way it makes them more apt to want to understand the theory after they get playing a little. It's a good non intimidating approach. I've seem too many video teaches throw so much theory into third on line lessons that can really confuse the student and bog dlearning process. I've passed his lessons on to my beginner friend. He keeps the fun in the lessons because they get the student playing right away. His pace is perfect Plus he's got cool guitars! lol

@federriedelbikes I don't really get your question ... You should be doing all of the above... Hammer ons, pull offs, alternate picking, down strokes, upstrokes etc ... Do them all as they feel appropriate ... But you MUST become fluent in alternate picking if you want to be halfway decent at guitar .. I use it 90% of the time - throwing in hammer ons and pull offs in quite often to spice it up.. I really only would use downstroke picking only if I'm doing sweeps or other less common things

No not exactly. It really depends on the tonic chord in your progression. All chords are created by notes of a scale, so many chords share the same notes as another scale. For instance C major and the A minor chords both can be found in the C maj scale and the A minor scale. So with that said, if you have a C major chord (and that is the only chord in the progression), and play the A minor pentatonic scale, you are going to hear it as the C major pentatonic.

Ok Marty says always slide on the ring finger. Can do, but would like to know why? I know if you slide on the first finger low E string, you can get a nice sliding affect easily if you want it. Now bending on the ring finger seems to be a cool thing. Been playing with bending any of the ring finger notes just to see the effect. Gives it more blues feel and less like just notes.
