PFF's has a narrow definition of what makes a great QB, one who makes a lot of imaginary "big-time throws." PFF is the Al Davis of advanced stats. They just can't see how outdated their thinking is. ... Obviously, there is more to advanced QB play. See Bill Walsh. In Walsh's system, what mattered more was timing (anticipation) and throws under 20 yards for first downs. PFF undervalues any throw under 20 yards for a first down, no mater how highly-leveraged the situation is, no matter how difficult the throw is --- through layers of the coverage, with anticipation (before the receiver makes a cut), and/or against close leverage (tight window). Goff makes a lot of those throws. If we graded Goff as Bill Walsh might grade him, he would be a top 5 QB. ... At this point, PFF is just doubling down on their stupidity. They have been around too long not to figure out that their QB model is limited and outmoded.

"Big Time Play" = Throws 20+ yds...you'd think he was getting paid everytime he said that phrase.🙄🤦🤷 The Lions offense is not designed to air it out. They rely on the ground game to open up the play action pass game. And 1st yr in Detroit was with a fired OC that Dan Campbell took over play calling for about mid season. So it makes sense Goff would have more 20+yd throws in LA, he didn't have succes when he 1st arrived in Detroit, and he doesn't throw the ball down field a lot (few passes per game to Kalif or Jamo mixed in with the middle of field work).🙄🤦 So he puts Tua and Dak above Goff, because they have more 20+yd throws, but they both tend to fail "Big Time plays in big time games". And then goes on to say playoff wins shouldn't count because playoffs are too volatile. Meanwhile Dak and Tua are 1-3 (2-5 overall) and 0-2 in the playoffs in past 3yrs, respectively, while Jared is 2-1 (5-4 overall).🙄🤦 He says Goff needs more than a year of success to rank higher, then puts CJ, Love, and Trevor above him.🙄🤦 He says Goff can't run, then put Cousins coming off a torn Achilles above him.🙄🤦 Complete and utter 🐮💩

Yupp. Pff is pathetic and bias
@adgee54015 ай бұрын
You are mostly correct, but you leave out quite a bit of info. With Jamo hurt/suspended for a year and a half and not practicing much, who was the Lions deep threat? They didn’t have a true deep threat and had to manufacture. Once Jamo and Goff started to get their timing, you get the play like you had against Bland. They had to scheme Raymond open after Chark left. Calling go routes when you don’t have the personnel to do it doesn’t make much sense, but it never gets mentioned and the Lions offense is often miscast as how you laid it out. Technically, you’re right, but it’s valid reasons why it looked the way it did.

@nathanp.32065 ай бұрын
@@thomaswatkins3686 Yes, they did. You are making an assumption about my post that is incorrect. PFF does great at tracking stats, especially breaking general stats down into very specific categories. However, these lists are useless, especially when looking at anyone under the age of 22/23. There is no objective standard for evaluating players, especially when you cherrypick what stats are important to you in ranking a player. The only stat that matters is wins, the rest is pseudo intellectual bullshit.

Personally I don’t care about off platform throws as a stat because it means two things either the offensive line didn’t do its job or your a jackass who held the football too long . It’s also true that as QB like any pitcher has more wear and tear on their arm especially playing in a west coast offense where you throw the football 30-40 times a game. I wouldn’t be surprised that Goff has been working back from all the mileage Sean mcvay put on his arm in L.A it’s why his TD and passing yards have steadily improved over the past three seasons And the Zip has started to come back . Young Quarterbacks tend to be reckless with hard they throw the football. Always throwing harder than they need to
