I love Lo5R, kinda got mixed feelings about this one just because the way they designed the Crab clan really doesn't do justice in conveying what they typically look like, and the with the decades of gorgeous art and character portraits they couldn't get the rights to use some of those? but it's still in early phases.

The coloring of the characters is really throwing me. I keep expecting them to be Cranes with all those blues and whites. While I'm not completely sold on the gameplay as feeling very L5R, I adore the setting, so seeing anything involving it makes me happy. I do think there are some things that really need to be cleaned up, but it does look like it has some potential.

There is a tabletop wargame based on Lot5R, called Clan Wars. It would not surprise me if there was a board game as well.

Well lets just hope for Sukune's sake its not a terrible standard they find in the shadow lands...if you know you know. Cool to see a clan war era game brings me back. Not to sure if I like the auto battle thing its got going on, hopefully you have a choice of taking control. Hoping to see some call backs to the old cards, but guessing not over image rights and the like. Would guess they would have to do all new art.

From what I can see, the main characters are from Crab but you can hire troops from other clans. It may be possible later in the game to play other main characters from other clans too but I haven't seen that.

The setting of the game doesn't seem authentic. Kinda botching some cultural things, like the starting hero having tattoos and no one reacting to it is very strange. Is she a gangster?

It’s not historical. It’s based on its own universe back when it was created in the 90s.

The game takes place in Rokugan, not Japan. They don't have the same hang ups about tattoos because Rokugan isn't real. In universe they are more commonly associated with Dragon Clan Monks, although they are not exclusive to them. So it wouldn't be a cultural faux pas, in lore the one time Empress Bayushi Kachiko has her clans mon tattooed on her back. There are likely many other characters with tattoos for a wide variety reasons from granting supernatural abilities and traits in the case of the Dragon Clan Monks, to signifying membership within certain organizations, or just purely cosmetic.

hardly matters in a fictitious world loosely based on feudal japan. Also, thats a more modern cultural hang-up, tattooing was more common back then in actual japan
