This is actually very educational for me. I never understood the roles.
@alabamahebrew5 жыл бұрын
You never understood their roles? The rhythm player is essential, the lead player really is not. Now, it's best to have each player be the best they can be, but ultimately it all comes down to the rhythm of the song that makes it a good song or not. Think about this, think of your top ten favorites songs, how do you recognize each song when you first hear it? By the rhythm guitar! Songs like Layla are easily recognized by an opening lead part but that is rare. Sure the lead guitarists usually get more of the attention, but musicians recognize that the rhythm player is the true star. Angus got all the attention but had it not been for Malcoms rhythm playing those classic AC/DC songs wouldn't have been the same, right?
@WesleyOverdijk5 жыл бұрын
@@alabamahebrew Right. But, I meant in terms of who plays what. I've been trying to make music for a while now and always get stuck on combining guitars together. It's both a mixing problem and a matching problem (ha). Making an entire song on rhythm is not going to work for me because I can't play as well as Jared here does.
@alabamahebrew5 жыл бұрын
@@WesleyOverdijk I'm confused, I also do my own recording btw, how can you not make an entire song on rhythm? Are you basically saying you don't know how to put a lead part over a rhythm part? See, you have to establish the rhythm first, otherwise how will the lead player know what key to solo in? If that is your area of trouble, playing lead in the proper key, can I make a suggestion for you? Download some backing tracks off of You Tube. There are thousands of them for free that encourage you to download their stuff. Then play the backing track and practice soloing over them. It teaches you how to stay in the same key. If you have trouble remembering the keys, do what I did, I printed each key out on a piece of paper and have them taped on the wall in front of where I sit with my guitar, when in doubt look at the paper on the wall. Usually the backing tracks tell you what key they are in btw. I am not really much of a lead player but since I began using the backing tracks I have gotten much better. Lol I still can't play half as good as this show off Mr. Dines can though. Now sometimes a song will actually change keys just for the solo part. I remember one time hearing Jimmy Page was going to rehearse with someone, I don't recall the band he was going to make a special appearance with, the song they were doing had been changed to an E flat tuning and Page was pissed! he said he couldn't solo in that key for that particular song. I really didn't understand what he meant but I guess it caused some issue lol. A little trick I learned when I first began recording my own stuff. Solo one of two ways, either solo in the same area of the fret board as the rhythm is being played or move an octave up. If the rhythm is in the 1-4 fret area, solo in the 13 to 16 area. The backing tracks idea really helped me though.
@lilmarc7015 жыл бұрын
Wesley Overdijk never compare yourself to what you see on youtube, they do many tries and fail a lot, I guarantee you he didnt video this and get it all right the first try, also they edit their mix, he has better equpiment than the average player, edits the sound(not drastically but cleans it up),no job or occupation to focus on other than him playing music, and hes been playing a very very long time. With all of that of course you won't compare to him, hes a professional. Just saying dont compare urself to youtube!
@WesleyOverdijk5 жыл бұрын
@@alabamahebrew What I meant is that I don't have a band so I play everything myself. I can't create a nice rhythm because I'm just not that good at it yet. So what I tend to do is play simple rhythm and add a second guitar to give it some "flair". The problem I then encounter is that it becomes muddy (the sound) and I have a hard time deciding what the second guitar should then do. I want to make it fuller because I can't do vocals so it's all instruments and no vocals (I get shy when screaming because the neighbours once called the police haha). But your advise is good and I think it can help me, I'll give that a go! As soon as I get home I'll find some backing tracks. Thanks!

I remember the first time I watched this video. I was actually amazed at how much the rhythm guitar actually plays. The rhythm guitar spends a lot of time at the front of the mix, except during solo parts where the lead guitar is at the front of the mix. There are a lot of songs where the rhythm guitar plays more notes than the lead guitar. I'm not sure if that's how it is normally. Or if that's just how it is with the majority of songs that I listen to.
