The difference between a Rythm guitarist and a lead guitarist, is that the rythm guitarist sets the rythm and the lead guitarist plays the melody. One without the other doesn't work out to well, unless the guitar isn't the main focus of the song.

The singer can easily set the melody of the song. If you ask me. Being a great rhythm guitarist is more valuable of an asset than the leads because the rhythm and riffs are what drives the song to begin with amd likely the first thing you remember.
