Beans of Morgan Pictures I think the lyric is “I wouldn’t let her dance but a set or so” although I’ve seen it written down a couple of different ways. Another one was “I wouldn’t let her dance it upset her so”. The former is what it sounds like to me, but that’s the way my grandad sang it.

@leech77 A guy I used to play in a band with seemed to be saying "but I said it so" - which never made a _lick_ of sense to me. First time I saw the lyrics saying "a set or so" I thought "Whoa! Maybe that's what our guy was saying the whole time." They're almost indistinguishable in Lead Belly's accent. But our guy also said "Who made the backband? " Whoa GOL-DURN" To be fair the evangelistic Christians in the South are super offended by "God damn", but having profanity that doesn't rhyme hurts my ears.

@nicodagger I know its a bit late and others may have directed you to it already, but there is a version of this song in which Leadbelly says "woah cunningham" instead g-damn. Also, the verse regarding "sugar in the gourd" is omitted, so its family-friendly on all fronts. It is the version uploaded by piersonsmusic.
