When I was looking for a home in FL, I toured one house that had a garden. Walking around outside, I noticed someone had thrown a coconut in the soil. (it was not planted...just lying on top as if it had been discarded). 3 months later, I closed the deal and moved in. As I did a final inspection, I noticed the coconut had sprouted. Too busy to care, I went about getting established in my new home. Over the next year, the little coconut grew in to a tree that stood about 6 feet tall. I dug him up, put him in a pot, and moved him in to the caged area next to the pool. It's amazing to watch things grow here. Thanks for the vid, Lead Farmer - I really enjoyed it.

I am bound and determined to find a coconut this weekend. However, I did go to your site to see the update on your 2 new babies but can not find it. Did you do an update? Would love a play by play action on how long to developing roots, how long to see vegetation actually sprout, slow or fast grower and how long they have survived. Just have to pick your brain. Would be so much fun to be your neighbor and copy everything you do. Hope to get a response. Lynn

What's really gonna blow your mind is that you can eat what is called "coconut candy" from the coconut sprout. When the sprout gets to around 18-24 inches you can crack open the coconut and what will be inside where the coco water was is a soft delicious oily, slightly sweet coconut candy! And on top of getting to eat an amazing snack if you do it carefully the coconut tree can still live.

This brought back a memory when I was a kid...I’m 64 now. Lol When I was just a little kid, we got an allowance for chores at the end of the week. Momma took us to the store and we could buy anything we wanted, just as long as it didn’t cost more than our 50 cents allowance. All my other siblings bought candy and snacks, but not me, no sir, I found me a coconut and bought it! I was so proud of myself. I get home and while everyone else is sitting around eating their snack and candy, I was sitting there looking at my coconut a little dismayed as I couldn’t peel it, or get into it. Then I started whining and crying cause I couldn’t eat it. Haha Finally, they took a big rock and bust it open. All the milk spilled out of it so that was a loss. And the coconut was too hard for this little kid to get out of the shell. My last thought was, I wasted my allowance! But....there was always next weeks allowance and next time I’ll follow suit and buy something yummy that’s a little easier to get in to. 🤣
@robertnelson36722 жыл бұрын
He's having some fun with you guys! They will not grow in a humid plastic bag with water. It's easy to grow a coconut with the husk on. Because of their shape they usually fall on their side. The reason the ones he showed grew up-right is because the roots grew down to the soil through the husk. The sprout grows from the largest eye. But without husk at least at the top the nut the sprout will either dry out or rot in the soil. It must have something to keep it protected and moist A fresh coconut has milk in it like he said. Lay it on its side half buried, preferably with the largest eye at the bottom. Water with slightly warm-ish water. (Think tropical rain - slightly more than tepid) Over watering will cause it to rot. To germinate you need at least 25C / 73F for several weeks. Once you have a palm it should survive down to 12-15C / 54-60F at night in winter. Check out what temperatures in winter the most northerly place in Florida where coconut palms survive outside gets.

I did try one before, but failed - I think I lacked a consistent temperature, never before have I wished that I had my old airing cupboard back, but it would have worked. I didn't actually sit the coconut in the water either - just added the water for humidity. I will definitely try again, using your method - it clearly worked, well done! Have you ever come across 'Agri Buzz's' channel from Cambodia? They have a series on bonzai -ing a coconut and it is mad. I ordered one similar from Thailand, but customs seized it and destroyed it (as they seem to do with everything I order). Pretty gutting though. I know in Asia they use rice husk as a compost as not to use coir around a coconut, just to avoid transmitting disease. I hope you do regular updates on these coconuts and their progress, the timeline will be interesting. Thanks Lead, great job!
