The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped game 2 to the Florida Panthers in the 2nd round of the playoffs & Leaf fans aren't happy. Not only did a 47 second mental lapse cost them the game..but leaf fans were looking for justice after sam bennett cross checked michael bunting in the head & tackled matthew knies. Knies was diagnosed with a concussion, and Leaf fans are not happy at all. We break down the game & how both teams ended up with this result in this video.

Every year the refs put away their whistles during the playoffs, and every year people are surprised at all the non-calls. I've said it before but the NHL is the only sport that has 2 sets of rules -- one for the regular season and another for playoffs. This is why you hear about teams that are "built for the playoffs" They have size and able to play the body hard. Toronto is not one of those teams.

The worst part is how skill is marketed in the season, to only be riding backseat to savagery in the playoffs. Some of these plays are dirty and the dirt goes both ways. But particularly for teams like the oilers the hacking and slashing on mcjesus would never fly in the season, and the NHL carries over to the playoffs and suddenly stops calling things the same. I love the game, but as I get older and the bruisers are chased from the game in general I don't see the same need for non calls in the playoffs. Should just call the game. If you want the NHL to be a skill game, the skill should be rewarded. Just my 2 cents

This isn't only Leafs fans angry over this. The officiating these NHL playoffs has let several series get out of hand, leaving referees and their interpretation of rules playing a major influence over a) how individual games play out and b) who remains eligible to contest the series after dirty plays cause injuries. It seems the NHL and DoPS think the way to "grow the game" is to tip the scales in favour of small market teams and arbitrary "parity" at the expense of actual competition. If I enjoyed massive body slams I'd watch UFC... though this sport has shades more similar to WWE nowadays.

Already playing that type of hockey going in gives you so much momentum and it keeps going. If you're going to do a breakdown on the evolution of the three Florida goals, don't omit Giordano's failure to track Lundell on the 1st Florida goal, his responsibility after Liljegren slings the puck around behind the net. Yes, Tavares blows a tire that helps Reinhart's back pass, but how Giordano fails to recognize the danger Lundell poses is, truly puzzling. The 2nd goal, which is the result of Nylander, a careless guy frequently & especially in, or near his D-zone, getting his lunch stolen by Duclair. What most people missed on TV, was a black & white, text-book trip by Barkov on O'Reilly a scant 10 feet away from the spot Nylander coughs up the puck. Barkov had his stick right in between O'Reilly's legs in a classic tripping foul called almost 100% of the time, but oddly, not that time. Who scores the goal? Barkov, the guy who has fouled the Leaf centre eliminating him from being able to defend the play. O'Reilly was pissed & let the ref know it right after the trip. Don't ever tell me non-calls on blatant fouls don't critically impact games. Should've been no goal & another Florida penalty. The 3rd Florida goal results from the too-cute-for-their-own-good pair of Marner & Matthews always pushing offensive creativity, but seemingly unable to recognize the times you cannot do that shit, EVER, which is in your own D-zone! Questionable pass from Marner considering Florida had just tied the game, but the real fuck-up is Matthews & his idiot, soft, high risk, flip pass within reach of Luostarinen, who knocked it down easily. Matthews then blows the D-zone coverage on his own blunder, moving to cover Tkachuck who Bunting is already moving toward. That leaves late guy into the zone, Forsling loose to score the go ahead goal. It's called game management, being aware of the score & when it's NOT appropriate to try risky plays. The Leafs have basically gifted Florida all 7 of the goals they've scored. You simply cannot play like that in the post-season & expect any kind of success. Hugely pissed-off.
@ScottGostick
@ScottGostick Жыл бұрын
1st goal was on Tavares not Gio. Blowing the tire was not the problem either. Under the circumstances of that play and the position of his teammates he absolutely cannot chase that puck behind the net. That is a stop at the post and defend against that pass coming out. I think JT realized his mistake chasing that which is why he lost his edge as he tried to stop up. One thing has been consistent with this team for a couple months now, JT and Nylander are the two biggest defensive liabilities on the team and we've seen it play out time and time again.

@@ScottGostick Nope. Lundell is Gio's guy. I played D. Jarnkrok's covering the high slot, so Tavares, regardless of whether he should, or shouldn't have been chasing Reinhart, is heading behind the Leaf net, so Giordano has to take Lundell & he just stood at the half wall & didn't react until it was way too late. He might've been gassed from the chase back down the ice from the Florida end where he'd pinched in, but couldn't keep the puck in the O-zone. Giordano's check all day long.

When you take into account the game is played exponentially faster and quicker than any other game there are bound to be more errors by officials. Not to mention the logistics and placement of officials is conducive to more errors or miscalls. In the NFL you have 7 on-fields officials who are situated on the playing field covering every single visual aspect. In MLB you have an UMP covering every base and in the playoffs you even have 2 more covering the lines. You can thank me later for helping you understand several reasons why it's tough to call an NHL game on a playing surface that is 200 x 85 feet long and wide. with 4 officials on the ice. Bennett deserves to be suspended. These plays are dangerous, and are not hockey plays. They have nothing to do with the game. This isn't a matter of being 'soft' or 'gamesmanship' or whatever -- viciously cross-checking someone in the neck is insane. So is that whole Knies situation. He explained it like 'he got tied up in my arms' -- that's like punching someone in the face and saying 'they ran into my fist'. There's intent. It has no place in the game. The fact that the refs called him for just 2 minutes of penalties between these two plays is a whole other matter.

As a B's fan, I know I will cop all kinds of flack and be told to cope (that's fine, I'm already on to next year. Panthers did play well), but I have to say Bennet, Gudas and to an extent Tkachuk got away with a lot in the first round. Gudas had about 4 blatant missed interference calls in game 1 alone. I know no one cares because he mainly targeted Marchand, but there were several instances where he crosschecked players in the back to the ground and then sat on them when the puck was on the other side of the ice and nothing was called. Bennet had some dirty hits too. I get it with playoff hockey and blah blah blah, but the frustration at the time only comes from the CONSISTENCY of the league. Other calls in the series like the 'hand pass' goal, yet the Kings had a clear high stick play turn goal only the night before where both were reviewed yet the Kings goal stood etc. I know officials can't get it right every time but this year in it's entirety has been so inconsistent with cross checking, charging, kicking motions, goalie interference etc I feel like the league just needs to pick what they actually want and stick with it.

Toronto has always needed a bruiser that goes out and get a suspension to clean the ice up. They’ve got too much talent and no protection. You should be able to rough up a rookie like that without a fight or good hit after

Amen to this, I’d literally donate side money for a player like John Scott, Wendel, McSorley, Probert (RIP) or Tie Domi to put on a Leafs jersey and give the talent some protection.

Bennett - 3 game suspension for combined infractions. He punched Knies, rammed his head into the glass, and propelled him down to the ice. Then, he neck checked Bunting, which drew a minor penalty and a $5 fine, which amounts to about 3 shifts of playing time for him financially. Matthew’s got 2 games for the same neck check.

I’m glad you showed the comparison between the two crosschecks and how they are very different. Mathews cross check was much bit violent and deliberately targeted the head. The Knies play I don’t think the takedown was what hurt him. I think it was the missed hit where he hurt himself. It could have been called an interference or holding but a lot of refs have been letting some of those behind the play little grabbing and mucking type stuff go. They would call it if it kept going. Leafs fans should try watching another team sometime to see that all the teams deal with the other team being mean 😢.

If this was back in the day, even 10-15 years ago this would have been more legit because the leafs would have had an enforcer to come and sort it out after the hit. The reason i bring this up is because in a league that has essentially faded out the role of the enforcer, tougher teams are willing to take more serious liberties with players, especially if they are green like Knies. There just isn’t the same amount of order now and the game suffers. If this was 2002, Tucker or Domi or Corson would have been all over the Panthers.

@@doctorcane completely different in ever imaginable way. Bennet’s was literally a choke slam where he threw him down to the ground with his entire body weight on Knies head. Lafferty literally threw him to the ice in an actual hockey play, not wwe move.

@@andrewfrith3953 the analysts in NHL TV dissected it well, not an illegal hit. They got tangled, Knies held his arm which causes post of the issue. You are a homer

@@doctorcane never said it was a hit, said it was a choke slam. If the analysts somehow spun forcefully throwing a players head into the ice, no matter if they got tied up, legal then they must be biased af. Stop trying to justify that play as legal and unintentional, it’s just pathetic.

I was at the game last night up in the rogers private box. One thing that really was surprising was how negative leafs fans can be, especially the older guys. Also throughout the entire game the refs missed about 2 tripping calls and that nasty hit and push on knies. If leafs rely on the refs they’ll be out in 4…

To be fair, older generation has a right to be pissed off. They've never seen Leafs bring one home nor even try in my opinion. Although unless fans hit the team where it hurts and stop buying overpriced tickets, it would be way more effective than just bitching while spending money on Leafs.

Leafs fans are right up there with the worst fanbases in North American sports. You can see it live on TV when Bissonnette starts ranting. They believe that Southern Ontario is hockey's Valhalla, so... 1)They deserve the best players 2) Those players should be honored to play for TOR 3) The area deserves Stanley Cups 4) Other NHL teams are leeches whom owe their existence to the GTA 5) Other teams succeeding more than the Leafs is affront to hockey 6) If other teams succeed, it must be because their players are bums or the NHL rigged it 7) The natural reaction is for fans/media to eviscerate the league, the players, and anybody else who "couldn't handle every hockey person's dream." 8) Everybody from Southern Ontario naturally knows more about hockey than everybody else, so they give their asinine analyses on why players/coaches are failing after every single loss.

@@Matthew-cw3gn I couldn't agree more. I lived in Toronto for 20 years. Majority of Leafs fans are as entitled as it gets. I mostly blame fans for team poor performance. I've said it before but Leafs is the team where stars fade.
@RDRIV

@@Matthew-cw3gn this seems like projections, almost everything you've mentioned (aside from Point 2) is not believed by 99.99% of the fan base. Many Leaf fans are toxic, no doubt, but to trash the entire fanbase because of them is wrong. I have lived in multiple NHL cities and there are tons of stories of visiting fans being physically assaulted in many cities (Montreal, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Boston, Philly to name a few), less so when visiting Toronto. There is however a lot of anger when it comes to small market American teams out performing the Leafs in low tax Havens as Leaf revenue helps prop them up. Is that a justified gripe, maybe, maybe not.
