Tocchet is the new gold standard for coaches. (1) He's an ex-player -- fairly elite when he played, not a grinder -- (2) he's interested in bringing in more coaches than previous to help (Sedins, Foote, Gonchar, etc.,); (3) he works very closely with management in assessing players/trading for new players, etc., (4) progressive ideas, and fairly demanding. (5) expanded his office space so that more people could converse after games, and stuff like that. (6) brought players and mgt in weeks ahead of schedule to prepare for a good start. Good starts build morale and confidence. (7) he seems to have helped build a team that plays the same way whatever the score is. No defensive shell b.s., no panic.

Hey Sammy think of this, every major trade you wished Brad did this year....was for players from Calgary, you loved Tanev, you loved Zadorov, you like Markstrom and Andersson. Ever think Brad constructed that team? He is cooking, he signed a bunch of short contracts you can see he was buying time, and giving a few tests. He has the results and now some money so gotta give him time. In the end you want him to bring here what he brought to Calgary, which is recognition of his GM knowledge. He saw the team, met them, knew they could not win and needed to buy time to free contracts...Cook Tree cook, the temp is up

Mistake and Sheldon’s approach to coaching the leafs was that he didn’t turn them into the defensive team that they should have until the final three games of the playoffs. Those games proof that he knows what he’s doing he just didn’t want them to play that way through the season or they weren’t willing to play that way through the season.. personally I think with all of his decision-making flaws that we’ve all witnessed he’s a pretty darn good coach and very successful one

Yes, it was truly strange that he wasn't able to bring that high level of defensive play out of them until the last three games, which was impressive to see, even if it still wasn't enough. But they were just that one goal from advancing to the next round, and if they would have done so, I'm curious, how far do you think they would have had to go before he would have been kept on as coach? They likely would have had to win that next round as well and get to at least the conference final for him to have kept his job. Would you agree?

If those questions can be answered, and answered well, then question then becomes how do we, as a culture and a society, view redemption? Do we really believe people can change? Do we believe in forgiveness and self improvement? It’s a deep social question. If we want to be the type of society that people can make mistakes and learn and grow, and he has done the work, hire him. If not, don’t. Not worth the headache. If the Leafs mgmt really are genuine in wanting to win a Stanley Cup take a page from the history of the Montreal Canadiens from the year they upset the record wrecking Boston Bruins of 1970-71. They hired a INTERIM coach named Al McNeil. His approach was only aimed at winning a Stanley Cup. He would use the regular season to train his team to play on any line with any players. If a player did not produce he was benched or saw few minutes. He just wanted enough points to make the playoffs. He wanted to teach the players how to play through adversity. He wanted to make the players uncomfortable all season long, he wanted his players to grow grit. He had no fixed lines, he evaluated his players during the regular season. He was honest with his players about his approach. He told them he only wanted to have the players win the Stanley Cup. Montreal made one trade for Frank Mahovolich and brought up a young big goaltender from college who played 6 games allowing only 9 goals. He never played the Orr led Bruins. Montreal won the series against Boston in 7 games on the road. Dryden won the Conn Symth trophy and a Stanley Cup. The French press forced Al McNeil to be replaced because he didn't speak French even though he guided his team to a Cup. This could never work in Toronto, the fans don't want to go through the pain of a so so season to win a Stanley Cup

Vancouver didn't play up to their usual standard that first game. They will improve. Goaltending and team defense -- and overall readiness -- was nowhere near the level they were at with Nashville. Their intensity, team press and work on faceoffs was excellent though, so that kind of made up for some of the failings. The idea that Edmonton lost rather Vancouver winning is a bit of a problem in this whole discussion. Edmonton got off to a poor start in October and November because they were vulnerable -- both emotionally and because of holes in their lineup. Although they played well enough to make the playoffs, they still have some of those vulnerabilities. Not at all a given that Edmonton is the favorite in this series.
