A new coach should be able to hold players accountable without having to walk it back the next day because feelings were hurt

i remember the convos when tavares was signed. the back end of his contract probably won't age well but if we get 4 good years out of him we will be contending for a cup in that window. now it's like he's something stuck to the bottom of your shoe. wash, rinse, repeat.

It is on Shanahan. All the moves made by Dubas had to be rubber-stamped by the team president, which was Shanahan. And the moment Dubas recognized that he was going to need to break up to Core 4, Shanny couldn't have that and showed him the door. And then he made sure to bring in Treliving knowing that he would have to take time getting up to speed with the organization and wouldn't have time to properly evaluate any type of transactions with Core 4 before their NMCs kicked. Thus, he guaranteed another season of the same high-priced guys with little money to spend on the rest of the team. It's clear as day that Shanahan has prioritized the Core 4 over the actual team. In 20-30 years, when the Leafs are no closer to the cup, people will look back at what the Leafs have done in utter disbelief. How a franchise can keep the same players for almost a decade with only one series win to show for it. They will also wonder how Brendan Shanahan failed to build the Leafs up like the champion Red Wings teams he was a part of and kept his job for over a decade while the team did nothing in the playoffs.

@@JarradBruessel32 Yep. I believe Dylan Larkin is the only guy left over from when he took over. And he's building the team from the bottom up, with young d-men and young forwards. Their last piece of the puzzle is goaltending. And let's not forget, though he didn't stay to see it through, his fingerprints are all over the Lightning's cup success. He drafted Vasilevskiy, Point, Kucherov, Palat and Cirelli.

@@pomerlain8924 there are couple of others but they were rookies when he took over. Rasmussen and veleno. Veleno may get let go this summer. Rasmussen they decided to transform him into a good defensive forward and make him a pk guy and locked him to a good deal at 4 years at 3.2 million a year. If Rasmussen was given even a 5% increase in offensive assignments, he would be a 40 point guy which 3.2 million a year isn't bad for that production and they get him for his best years.

One thing you can't do is give this guy over 9m if somehow he ends up staying. Let alone a raise from the 10.9m Marner is making now, after his last few playoff performances, he's just not worth it. It just doesn't work. It's time to trade him for a couple younger players/prospects that your lacking in the system, and take tgat money you've saved and get a legit top pair right shot d man and a top four right shot d man, and fill out the rest of your roster from their. 9 years now with all that talent up front and not give the team a legit top pair right shot d man is unacceptable. The d played great this series but you need a top pair right hand shot d man who can do what they did, but also provide a bit of offensive also. Ya can't get that from the junk pile for cheap, like you can with just a defensive defenceman type of guy. Solid two way defenceman don't come that cheap. Better to get them in free agency than spend the farm on a rental at the trade deadline.

Only an organization with such low standards and accountability to their fans would allow Shanahan to continue on after 10 years of playoff failures. After all he’s the guy who let an inexperienced GM take over and destroy the cup window they may have had with the proper personnel decisions. To the Leafs, mediocrity is acceptable. Other top organizations hold their senior management accountable. If he stays on or even worse gets extended, then we know that they don’t care about winning a cup.

It’s as plain as the noses on your faces. The only thing that matters is the season tickets sold for the regular season. Playoffs are interesting for the MLSE as they don’t have to pay their players and they get to legitimately increase ticket prices. MLSE only cares about the amount of Leaf merchandise and a couple of superstars that fans can worship. The rest of the desire for playoff success doesn’t enter into the business model. It’s all about profit margins!

Tavares had 2 points in the playoffs man, as a Captain and making 11M, totally unacceptable. He is too slow. And then to come out as the Captain and say, “we are right there?” Right where? On the cusp of making it to Round 2 after 8 years? He is out of touch. What Rielly said was spot on. Tavares is a nice guy, great guy, but you can’t strip the C and have him back and he can’t be the Captain next year. It’s either you ask him to waive and accommodate him as to his list if he gives one or you let him walk. He’s 34. Again, I get these guys are hometown boys, love being Leafs etc. But at the end of the day, they have made tens of millions and this mix hasn’t worked and they need to acknowledge and respect that. If they can’t then like Kyper said, you are forced to play hardball with them. These are grown men, professionals, making tens of millions, they need to acknowledge that this mix of players just doesn’t work and isn’t going to work and accept it.
