I’ve read a lot about feeder insects because I happen to be the proud owner of the world’s pickiest leopard gecko (well, former pickiest. he’s doing so much better now. everyone clap or else) and despite all the hype around silkworms I’ve actually had a lot of trouble getting ANY of my insect-eaters to partake. Pebble, aforementioned picky boy, will eat hornworms pretty much any day of the week but silkworms he spits out instantly. tried to feed them to the jumping spider in my old bathroom I decided was a pet and she wanted nothing to do with them. the isopod colony wouldn’t even eat the corpses. things are cursed, I swear. also really expensive lmao

All of my leos hate them lol, but my tiger salamander loves them! He's the only one haha
@oqulis6 ай бұрын
I have to wonder if it’s something about their diet, maybe it’s a chemical in the mulberry leaves or artificial muck they come with. as for tiger salamanders - to be fair, I don’t think I’ve ever met one who would turn down anything you put in front of them, lol. mealworms, hornworms, crickets, roaches, the odd finger or two…

Here's a fun tidbit horned worms turn into hummingbird moths
@avanelletheclockfriend25158 ай бұрын
They’re some of my favorite bugs tbh. Funky little sausages that become funky little not-hummingbirds. I’ve always loved caterpillars and imo the bigger(and therefore easier to handle safely), the better, even if they’re treated as pests. I’ve actually thought about growing tomatoes just so I could keep tomato hornworms/five spotted hawkmoths. Alas, for now I’ve settled for rearing salt marsh moth caterpillars on dandelions, purslane, and other plants I’ve seen them eating in the yard. The mustaches are mobile and have been gradually transforming into fuzzy little flying cows with orange undershirts. Not to be confused with the mobile toupees that sting and grow up into little flying tan fairies. They’re actually fairly close relatives, but the latter has leaned far more into the whole US southerner aesthetic, but since they don’t make cowboy hats or boots in small enough sizes growing their own flannel was the best they could do. At least the effort was recognizable enough for them to be named after it! Also not to be confused with Texas ironclad beetles, which are also little fellas that look like cows, but do not fly, lack fuzz, and prefer orange lipstick over any kind of clothing. You might know of them because of their blue cousins that play dead very convincingly and love beetle jelly. Or their other cousins from California that look like chunks of asphalt and are currently being researched by the US military for potential combat vehicle applications. The world of ironclad/death feigning beetles is an interesting one! Fun fact: the insect with the longest proboscis is actually a kind of sphinx moth(aka hummingbird moth) native to Madagascar: Xanthopan praedicta, or Wallace’s sphinx moth. Because they feed from comet orchids, which have very long nectar tubes, they have an average proboscis length just under 8 and a half inches, over four times longer than the rest of their body. Look up pictures, it’s wack. Also the moths are just pretty and cute. Experts hypothesize there’s likely another related moth with an even longer proboscis that would be closer to a foot long since orchids in the same area exist with longer nectar tubes. This has been your 3 am infodump by a sleep deprived entomologist-to-be with adhd
