Interesting that there’s no Bradford City in the top 7. Although as things stand I’d totally agree. Smacks of us doing the same thing over and again and expecting a different outcome. Only this time more fans, except for the usual suspects, expect things to be the same as they have since we got relegated into League 2. Good to know it’s not just me thinking that if we couldn’t get into the top 7 last season with the squad we had, how do we expect to do it when we’ve not upgraded or side graded Platt. Having a fit Pattison & Young might make a big difference admittedly and if Wright can find his early form from his first loan, maybe it might be enough to get us in the play-off’s but that’s asking for 3 out of 3 of those things to happen. And there’s still time to lose the 25 games a season we get from Walker to Carlisle United, and or Bobby Pointon if we are now offering insulting contracts to existing players which if insider chicken is to be believed is what Walker got from the club. Although even from a club/starting 11 point of view, reducing his wage after 25 appearances does nothing to help us get more games out of Walker per season. Maybe Walker sounded like he would have left if the club hadn’t triggered the extension is BECAUSE the contract we offered him was a bit insulting and showed that those at the top don’t value our existing players and won’t treat them fairly. I said the same thing to Korban earlier in the year about the side effect of offering insulting contracts, even if it is a good thing to be working to save the club as much money as we can. And the reaction from Walker is kind of exactly my point. You have to find the balance eg stop hanging 3 year deals like confetti and over paying players you could have got for much lower wages (I felt we could have got Platt much cheaper and Odusina to name 2, and renewing Angol, Hendrie & the left back who’s name escapes me at Harrogate now because what they were on before compared to after was a significant increase that a few hundred £ a week or even an increase of £500 for the new players would have got the deal done. But now it seems we are throwing the baby out with the bath water and not offering ANYONE a 3 year deal when you could argue someone like Pointon should get 3 years not 2. Whilst being really tight on wages when we should be considering what the player was on before and not offering £2500 a week for a player who was on £800 a week before, whilst looking at important players and current players like Walker and being fair with them whilst not going mental and offering him silly money. Upshot is to balance current players needing to feel like the club gives a shit about them, with being competitive but not just throwing a shit load of money to a player when we don’t need to. It’s like at the top we sulk and if they do something one way and it proves to be bad, suddenly the answer is to do the exact opposite as a rule. There’s no sensible middle ground approach, everything always seems to be a one-fits-all approach which doesn’t treat people like individuals.
