True, it might have been a more tight match should he get a wee bit better rolls and Nick not pulling those heavenly rolls on some instances (LF overwatch and Champion saves were just oof)

I agree with you mostly but I run Custodes and can tell you 3 things for sure. 1st is that his list was a 9th edition list. 2nd is Nicks rolls were stupid good. 3rd is that Votann are hella hard to fight for Custodes unless you build a list specifically for handling an army that excels against elite armies.

@@FnRenner I do not have experoence playing against Votann but those Hearthkyn seemed to be very hard counter for sure. Amd eell yeah Volkite weapons and since DW changed and half of Custodes faction rule is almost useless - there are not that many sources of MW now (you could also see that in game where Custodes get chatged and get the MW and guys like "mortal wounds I have thing for that"

@@sirseacow4514 That's intentional by design. Removing armored vehicles is meant to be their exploitable flaw to balance the army 'Rock - Paper - Scissor' style. That and being super expensive point-wise to make the hard to fail saves very costly when they do. It's a better position to be in than Necrons, imo. They also suck at removing armored vehicles. But they don't have universal invuln saves and 2+/3+ saves army wide. They have to rely on a gimmick that can be circumvented entirely. lol

Just takes practice. Between Warhammer Fantasy Battle, 40k, and Kings of War, I have something like 23 armies (playing since 1993). Plus, 40k 10th is really easy. Frankly it’s a bit too easy

As a custodian player, it’s honestly hard to play when you’re outnumbered but that’s how it is. We hit hard and kill damn well in melee but man, you never wanna take first turn imo.

It's hard to play when you construct an awful army list and then deploy your vehicles in the middle of the board, and charge into melee with saggitarum, etc etc. Baffling decisions top to bottom from this custodes player.

To be fair, he said he doesn't play Custodes, and I would probably do the same things he's done. Custodes are known for great melee and just not dyeing, so mistakes like his are understandable for new to Custodes players@@TheSearinoxx

@@benpeterson6097 Late to the party: while you are correct; it's still a lot of bad decisions. Not only are the bikes quite bad, given their only advantage is speed, putting them in the middle of the board is just bad 40k wether you play adMec, custodes, tyranids or anything. Keep them out of sight and move them where they need to be when they need to. The rest of the list also was kinda meh but mostly, the allarus or dreads should have been sent on those tanks ASAP. Your wardens or guards can take care of everything else, or at least not die while doing it; but only the big guys can take care of those tanks. All in all, some bad decisions and a lot of bad roll against your worst meta enemy leads to a difficult fight; which may still have been a great game :)

What i love the most about these games is the fact you dont take meta lists. Your not afraid to try something different. Nick and that Votann were awesome and really have me thinking about bringing a 3rd warrior unit when i normally ony use 2. Also no sagitaur either and that is a staple in most kin armies. Well done all!

The Votan list was fairly competitive though and it felt like they went out of their way to pick some of the worst units from the Custodes roster and then use them in the worst ways. Expensive terminators in the back, dreads slow walking up the center of the board, melee warlords leading ranged units, and Guards with Vexila and swords. If they were both unoptomized list I'd have had no complaints

Anthony is a great opponent but his custodes list made me wince. Trajan on saggitarum and four bikes are a waste of the army’s potential. But a good game regardless.

And yeah, no caladius and he never used Slayer of Nightmares when attacking the land fortresses with his allarus. He’s clearly a very competent player from his tactics but he just needs to run custodes half a dozen more times to get a feel for them.

40in40 battlereports are always fun to watch! I just bought a custodes army, and I'm still waiting for them to arrive, but even I know better than this 😅 I have literally no experience with custodes, but it seems like people tend to build 8th edition lists, which is almost exactly opposite a 10th meta list. Bikes, saggitarum, axes, contemptor dreads, etc. If he at least had a caladius, or maybe even a telemon, he could have had at least some kind of ranged threat/bait. Going 2nd as custodes is amazing because you can reserve your allarus at the end of your opponents turn and redeploy on yours. Even having just one sword and board in the guard unit just for the wounds. I totally get not caring about meta and having a fun list, but even that could have been done differently. Throw an Assassin in there, maybe a named inquisitor on the saggitarum. Throw Aleya on some sword sisters, stick trajan with wardens. Anything would have been better than this list, unfortunately.

What you do after destroying a unit in melee is called a "Consolidation Move" and not "Pile in" (Pile in is done after charging) but you can only do that if the unit is in range of an objetice marker.

Just FYI Nick, the unit of Sagitarum that killed the Brôkhyr Iron-Master and his Hearthkyn Warriors was supposed to get 2 judgement tokens. 1 for the Warriors and 1 for the Iron-Master. :) Great game guys!

Anthony's ( The Custodes player) dice let him down hard this game. He had several series of bad dice that led to the Custodes doing far less output than they should have. I feel like he positioned them well and made strong plays, but in the end, really got let down.

This was a rough game to watch. The votann are extremely strong right now, and the custodes are really weak. This custodes list wasn’t even anywhere near optimized. No heavy armor support, and poor choice in units.

Holy Emperor, these Custodes felt like guardsmen against the Votann. I think they suffered from bad ranged options and trully no way to take down those Hekatons. Plus, I think some Arcane Genetic Alchemy and Slayers of Monsters would have helped.

Q: when nick used Uthar’s Ancestral Fortunes for the 6s, should that actually have triggered the devastating wounds? RAW, changing result of a dice roll is a modifier and dev wounds only trigger on unmodified rolls. (Aeldari and Sisters both specify their dice roll changes are treated as unmodified)
