Speaking as someone who has never owned a M43 camera, this is the first model that actually has me thinking of buying into the system. I don't care about the megapixels. The main positive points for me are: the small size *with* good ergonomics, weather sealing with weather sealed small primes, and a premium evf. A $2000 price would give me some pause, as I'd like to see it match the X100VI. Duel card slots would be nice also, but not a deal breaker.

I value ergonomics too. But I'm afraid the OM3 may be a step back on that front with its flat front. It'll be a nightmare with any of the PRO zooms, unless you add a third-party grip. Unless they just expect you to use it with the new weatherproof primes.

@@gregfeeler6910 I’m quite confident they’ll offer a grip (though has Panasonic provided one yet with the S9?). It’s just the native ergonomics I’m referring to. Price will be an issue. The body should be $1300 max. I absolutly agree about the PEN-F II. OM - All you needed to do is to the the exact same body of the original PEN-F , replace the internals to OM-1 II's internals (as much as possible), update the EVF, add USB-C charging, add weather sealing and change the name on the camera. That's it! Don't overthink.

I like the new camera. It sure looks great, the only thing that I wished it had was the joystick, I don't know why they didn't put it. About the sensor the one in OM-1 / II is the latest and the best sensor for m4/3. It's BSI stacked sensor. We can discuss if a vintage camera needs a really fast reading stacked sensor, but for sure is not old and regarding high ISO and DR is the best m4/3 sensor.

40 MP on APS-C is a little over the top, just like ~90 MP via 36x24mm (35mm) Sensor. "Fullframe", and thus therefore very demanding, in terms of optical lens quality, from the matching X mount lenses. Personally, i am much more a fan of the old X-Trans I&II Sensors (16MP) as the rendering is more organic. I'd never sell my T1, or E1/E2. And 16 MP is plenty. I've made 120x80cm Canvas prints with just 12/13 MP of my D700/5D before....go figure. No pixels visible, of course. I am not a pixel pooper, err -peeper, never watch my compositions, pictures at 200 to 400%, never pixel peep at the extreme corners, or into general, i see the picture as a whole. Passionate hobby since 1984.

Why? Because for the same field of view and same depth of field, you shoot on a more preferable aperture for the same exposure. That is, if I shoot a scene on an OM-1, and you do the same with a Nikon Zf, and we use the same ISO, I can use a lower aperture and achieve better resolving ability and faster shutter speed. So the Nikon would have marginally better DR and noise performance (if we're shooting in low light), but even with a larger physical sensor it isn't getting to resolve more pixels because of the narrow aperture it would have to use to get the same DoF. This would matter in genres like street photography in which small sensors are preferred by many photographers, but would give the Nikon the advantage in genres like portraiture and beauty.

You dont need a rangefinder. Leica does it. OM-3 into classic 35mm SLR design (came from that since the 80s) is perfect enough - together with a new, weathersealed 17/1.8, it's perfect. I'd buy it - better than the non-weathersealed Zfc, which does have a bigger APS-C/DX Sensor, but no real matching "vintage" AF lenses, and the Z mount is simply too big, for just DX...for my taste. The OM-3 this way into black, metal build, with the tech from the OMD E-1 Mark II...20 MP MFT Sensor, what's not too like, if being reasonable priced. I'd get one, perhaps in 2026...if it's living up to it's design, not uber expensive, for what it is. I shoot all my life mostly with 35mm, and i love this focal length. 17mm is 34mm in FF terms, so pretty fine.

OM System have two sensors currently in use. The 20MP CMOS that debuted in 2016 is CMOS is incredibly dated. The quad-Bayer BSI sensor which debuted in 2022, whilst the same pixel resolution, offers much faster readout, better dynamic range and the noise performance of an APS-C sensor. The predicted price would be a tough sell normally. However, the market has shown that people are willing to spend a lot of money for the style. Look at those used Fujifilm prices... Ridiculous. The price of this OM-3 can probably hold on for a year and a half before semi-permanent discounts ultimately drive the price down.

People, who are used to APS-C or FF - justified or not - will not “downgrade” to M43 in a body that is as big as a FF or APS-C, especially not for 2.000,-. You get a Nikon ZF or A7c II for 2.000,-. If it would be a Rangefinder, as small or smaller than a X100VI and cheaper, it could be a success.

If it's really in the $2000 range, I don't get what they are thinking. The market has been screaming for a new Pen-F so instead they do a mix of parts from the OM1 & OM5. No interest to me but I already have too many OMD/OM bodies. A 100-400 with full sync IS needs to have improved optics as well if they intend to raise the price. I do hope they still do the 50-200is/2.8, built to the M.Zuiko pro quality standards, not a Sigma.

I love my Olympus cameras, and might be interested in the OM-3. But, the price will matter a lot. At $2000 it's hard to justify compared to many competitors in that price range. At $1500... maybe. Guess we will find out. If the $2000 price is for the OM-3 bundled with one of the new updated weather sealed lenses (i.e. 25 or 17 f1.8) then that might be interesting, but I doubt that will be the case.

Assuming it has similar strengths as the OM-1, it'll have faster readout than the Zf and X100VI thanks to the stacked sensor, 120fps continuous shooting versus only 15fps / 11fps, zero blackout viewfinder, four times more focus points than the Zf and double the X100VI, higher viewfinder resolution, higher video resolution than the Zf, LiveComp and LiveND, longer battery life... You could justify a higher price tag (though I would like it to be more competitive!).

I buy cameras to make photos. Not for their good looks. Wanting a lighter camera, for minimal cost, I looked at the E-M10 IV in July. I didn't like its lack of ports on the side, so bought an OM-5 with 12-45 F4. It's been my most-used camera since then. I later came by more $$$ and now have a G9 II and OM 1. I still appreciate the lightness of the OM-5 kit even though the others are more capable. If this sits between the OM-5 and OM-1, I don't see a use for it in my photography. Weight matters because I've lost strength with AML NOS. It's killing me.

The camera looks more like an OM5 with the front grip removed, the front function button replaced by the PenF dial. If so, this was probably cheaper and easier to engineer than a Pen F that has not been produced since 2019, especially for weather sealing which the Pen did not have. I do wonder if the rumours saying it has got OM1 II innards are correct or if it is just an OM5? The demographic who probably want a retro camera and are not already rather retro themselves (ie not me -young trendy people) probably do not need the OM1 innards and the OM5 would be fine. For me my OM5 is retro enough with a grip that works for my (not massive) hands. While I love the design of the old film cameras I cannot see this camera being that nice to use for long and the dial while cute will be a two handed job to adjust ,albeit you probably set it and leave it most of the time? But if that is true why have the dial. Lets see what 6th Feb brings.

2:14 It looks like they did away with the threaded shutter release from the Pen F. What a shame. When I got my Nikon Zf, I was VERY disappointed that its threaded release is cosmetic only and non-functioning. 3:08 I think they should have just taken the Pen F, put the new sensor and processor in, upgrade the viewfinder resolution. 3:27 This OM3 is basically just an OM1 without the grip and buttons. And if it's built to the same standards as the Pen F in terms of build quality, what's the point compared to the OM1? It needs to be considerably cheaper than the OM1 to make sense. I'd rather have them consider more premium build quality, e.g. use premium materials in the body like titanium or brass. It's great that they added Sync-IS to the 100-400. Unfortunately, I own the current 100-400. Looks like I need to sell it quickly now.

The lack of innovation in the OM-1 Mark II is probably why this camera isn't an OM-5 Mark II at a far more reasonable price. I was really hanging out for the OM-5 Mark II, which should have had the internals of the OM-1 shrunk down to a smaller package (just as the OM-5 was a smaller version of the E-M1 Mark III). I would buy that in a heartbeat. The problem for OM System is that the OM-1 Mark II is only a tiny step forward on the OM-1 when it comes to hardware. And the way in which it's different - more RAM - makes no difference to an urban shooter (who wants to take street or travel photography at 120FPS?). This created an enormous marketing problem - an OM-5 Mark II based on an OM-1 is every bit as good as an OM-1 Mark II for an urban photographer, but it's half the price of the OM-1 Mark II and, therefore, it would cannibalise sales of their top camera. So the new camera had to break the pattern that the new 5 model has the tech of the previous 1 model, and be branded as an OM-3 to justify a higher price. And then spun as having the same sensor and viewfinder as the *current* OM-1 Mark II, obscuring the fact that it's also the same sensor and viewfinder as the *superseded* OM-1 and, therefore, that the normal pattern would have been to release this as the OM-5 Mark II at a much better price. Even if the OM-1 Mark III is a big step forward on the Mark II, we're stuck with this new crappy pattern - OM System will have to hobble the OM-5 Mark II (no stacked sensor or decent viewfinder) in order to protect the sales of the OM-3. Remember this tactic has been used before - Olympus hobbled the E-M10 Mark III and IV (after the brilliant Mark II) to preserve sales of the 5 series of cameras. So it's going to be years now before I can get an updated OM-5 (i.e. a reasonably priced, compact camera) with a stacked sensor. Same (or worse) for those of you wanting a PEN-F II (which will to have to be worse than an OM-5). Which sucks.

1500€ would have been the top limit for me: there is no reason to pay more for a 20Mp sensor several years old, especially now that 24Mp is the entry level on several image agencies. The Pen-F was deemed "Too expensive" at 1300€, but (horrible firmware aside) it had a 100% new sensor, new functions and had nothing in common with other products, except may be the EM1mkll launched at the same time. The unique look and build quality justified the price for me, especially after the firmware rework. This OM3 is a "new" reboxing of the OM2Mkll, already a firmware upgrade of the 4+ years old OM1. Owning an OM-1n I never deemed that Camera "great" for handling, compared to its contemporary (Nikon and Canon), so this camera is just "For the look" and will need and won't offer anything "unique", like an okd fashon watch with a cheap quartz movement inside. Old SLR were made for holding with the left hand, for focussing, and the right hand only was required for the shutter button and reloading of the film. Modern Digital mirrorless are 100% autofocus and have a pletora of dials and buttons on the right, so any sort of grip is a necessity.
