I went to the Waste management open in Arizona in 2024. It was awful. Took an hour and a half to get dropped off and walk in, there were droves of people funneling in. People were throwing empty beer cans into the lawns of the apartments by the event. We stayed in the actual event for 1.5 hours before leaving. The bathrooms were just outhouses filled with stool and no toilet paper with 30min wait lines. $11.0 for a hard seltzer. Thank God I got the tickets for free, the crowd was massive and the worst event I've been to. They blamed the "mud" from the rain buy really, the crowd was just the largest they've ever had and they didn't have a way to control the massive crowd.

Courses find other ways to make more dollars by having scrambles, off season events, party packages which include sale of adult beverages in their monogrammed coolers...Its not the snobby rich man's game any longer and the marketing of it by the PGA related businesses are creating the atmosphere.

I worked security at 16 for five full days. First, the picture that you showed with cans etc on green, did not happen. That was an old picture. Was there a lot of drinking, sure, but I did not see anything out of control inside 16. The crowd was fairly well behaved. As far as heckling, that happens at every tournament and guys like Jordan and Billy are always complaining about something. Zach though, I think he was frustrated and let some steam off. He is usually very polite. The crowd at the WM is younger, in general and anytime you mix alchohol and goofs you get issues. Guy sliding in the mud, was not a big deal. When did that happen? During rain delay? Guy who jumped in bunker had most of his clothes on. During long break between rounds. They caught him and he was dealt with. This isn’t something you see in just golf. Super Bowl last night? I have worked the WM for five years, is it perfect, no. But, they are cleaning things up. There are much stricter rules on 16. It’s getting better. A lot of what you have discussed is out of context!

This outing is in Las Vegas, and remember that their tourist slogan is, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" so partying and generalized buffoonery is tacitly encouraged. The WM seems to be one continuous party over several days and nights with some golf being played between concerts and drinks, sunrise and sunset, as if golf is simply a party accoutrement rather than the raison d'etre. And, the 16th hole and its surrounding stands with drunken and ill-mannered crowds brings to my mind the Roman Colosseum where the crowds in a multi level venue were probably equally rowdy 2 millennia ago. There, the crowds cheered Christians being fed to the lions; the WM simply has taken this to a modern level of boorishness, only minus the blood and death. (And, if this trend here continues, maybe instead of fisticuffs, the ad hoc combatants can be given swords and shields with the crowd signaling thumbs up or thumbs down.) Additionally, I suggest that golfers follow the example set by Dick Butkus and Mike Curtis when a rowdy drunk ran onto an American football field during games many years ago: Both Butkus and Curtis leveled the offending idiot with a forearm to the chops and then let the police take out the trash. I'm not being a killjoy as people need to enjoy golf, but this over the top boorish behavior has got to go away. I would expect that radical surgery be performed on the organization of this tournament or that it be terminated. Just my $0.02.

I’m so glad to hear a golfer’s perspective on this topic. I’ve watched a few other videos of people say well football teams have fans yelling all the time, or basketball teams have fans trying to distract them during free throws. But those sports aren’t golf. Then those same people say Billy Horschel is in the wrong for saying “stop talking when he’s hitting a shot this is our job” The tournament organizers need to do a better job of monitoring alcohol sales and the number of people that are on the course. They also have to do a better job at keeping the spectators quiet during play. It’s one thing for players to hear the crowd going crazy from the other holes, but it’s not okay to talk and yell when a guy is in front of you hitting a shot

Many of the things Alex was complaining about were what I admired about the WM. What he doesn’t mention is how not having a plan for bad weather put a lot of people who were acting rationally in danger as well. There was a ton of areas sober (enough) people were taking some very awkward falls …over and over again. People were getting too crowded, which we have seen in Korea how dangerous that can be. A person on social media was showing what appeared to be people pushing through ticketing and security. A woman was reported to fall out of 16, luckily no major damage there. Im not sure how accurate all that is but im using a similar soccer analogy today. As watching social media reports it truly reminded me of entrances at crazy soccer games back in the 80s and 90s; when crowds would storm in. And then obviously act crazy once inside. At LIv meanwhile the party was restrained. Tickets were sold out because that’s what they feel they can handle for now. The commissioner constantly present. The US open may have gone too far on restraint this summer but all the majors as LIv show restraint on attendance for a reason. IMO this event can continue to grow. But it needs very competent leadership. IMO this party comes with great responsibility. As usual this leadership left the players to try and control things. Which only made them all look even more like shooters and Karens.

No alcohol sales before 2 p.m. or a hand stamp system where everyone has to buy their own drinks and have their hand stamped. 1st Drink - Green stamp, 2nd Drink - Blue stamp, 3rd Drink - Red stamp and that's it until after 3 p.m. Entry ticket conditions with explicit expulsion for unruly / disorderly behavior. And pay for TONS of security to enforce the above! No different than managing a bar or nightclub on a Saturday night. The best ones know how to do. When you find a way to keep the one out of 20 people who is an asshole on the road, then we can figure out how to keep the one out of 20,000 people who is an ass out of the WMPO.

Horschel is a hypocrite, he was playing to the crowd throwing footballs on 16. If you're going to stoke the party atmosphere, then be prepared for the flames that follow.

Waste Management is a disgrace to the game. It is not what golf needs and to make such a claim indicates a deep lack of knowledge of the game

The tournament probably made money. And I hope they provided lots of toilets for these drunks. Detroit tournament had no toilets on the back nine last year(peed my pants coming off eighteen).

Was there on Saturday for 2024 and 2023. Didn’t see anything too extreme. Some drunk people yeah, but nothing different from any other sporting event. Traveled the entire course. Everyone was quiet and respectful when players hit their shots. This was only a few bad actors and media overblowing things as usual
@neilrober7 ай бұрын
I agree it's gone a bit off the rails. Limiting the number of beers per ticket might help weed out the over indulgers while maintaining the fun atmosphere. Too much alcohol and young men is asking for problems.

Golf has clearly become an international favourite. The PGA needs to make a decision on which direction they choose to steer the game. If Gong shows like the WM are to become acceptable, I fear the reputation of the PGA will be in jeopardy. Not only for the risk of losing world class players but also the fans. Players and fans whom share a love for the “Heritage” of this fine game. Arnie, Jack, Seve, how would they feel about the mockery this tournament has now become over the past few years. In my personal opinion, this is an embarrassment for the PGA The next player, players that leave to join the Saudi league should not come as a surprise if the league doesn’t make a substantial change. Fellow golfer, concerned fan, and lover of this beautiful game.

Golf needs out of the box tournaments like this to appeal to the younger crowd otherwise it will die a slow painful death. Only problem is there is always a couple of knuckle draggers that ruin it for the majority. Sounds like the knuckle draggers were out in force at Scottsdale.

LOL - I predicted this years ago. The PGA deserve it for not stamping down on the behaviour years ago. The Masters shows how to stop this sort of behaviour - before it even starts.

I know this is a golf tournament, but how many times does Good Good “imply” one of its members is off to the side of a hole peeing in the bushes.
@bobbygoodman28757 ай бұрын
I don't watch Good Good, I've hit puberty. Like many things today, the challenge is to take it to the next level and test how far you can go. Will they capture a fart with a mic...maybe they could take the cameras to the outhouse and film someone taking a dump and talk about it for a few holes. There must be an audience for it but you can count me out. Performance Art does not belong on the golf course.
@mrgolfdogs7 ай бұрын
I agree with what you are saying but the horse is all ready out of the barn. When you put 20 or 30 thousand people in very close quarters and fuel them full of alcohol you are going to get idiots and collateral damages. The professional golfers know what is going to happen so yelling at the drunk fans will only make it worse. You either let it go on as it is and deal with the occasional fights and damages or you just stop that whole show.

I was there! Dropped my boys and 3 friends off at 5am for 16th hole I went back to hotel. My boys and friends are not animals but wow the others at 16 were totally out of control on Saturday. I got there at 1230 they couldn’t handle the crowd so they opened the gates let everyone in. That’s where the problem started. Saturday were not true golf fans. Guy would miss a 30 ft putt and f bombs would reign in on all holes. Stupid! Ppl yelling in backswings. The worst is it rained for a week before tournament ppl were falling down right and left on inclines coated in mud. We went Sunday less crowded true golf fans better time. Advice if your young and like the nonsense Saturday is your day. If u love golf skip Saturday.

The bafoons find out about this and they go to party, get drunk, cause trouble.There not golf fans, but this has been escalating until this happens. This will get worse unless they control this, or they don't care because of the money there making.

It's odd that the tournament states that they stopped letting fans get in because of overcrowding but there's conflicting footage that shows the gates were opened up to anyone (ticket or no ticket) at one point on one of the days. In that new clip from a local news station, you could see hundred of people just walking through the gates without anyone checking tickets - it was an absolute free for all.

It kind of reminds me of being invited to horse racing. Some people are just looking for a public piss up and have no interest in the sport. As much as I enjoy a few drinks on the golf course, this doesn't really look good and disrespects the level of effort and preparation that these golfers are making to play at the highest level. They should just eject the people who take it too far and ban them from coming next year.

You don’t see this crap at a LIV GOLF event. Waste Management Phoenix Open lightweights.
@stevecollins49197 ай бұрын
Can you imagine this happening at the Masters or the Open??? No, of course not! Start getting rid of the “rowdies” and while you’re at it you get of anyone who yells “in the hole” on a tee shot! 🇨🇦 loves Nick Taylor hope he gets the respect he so deserves … just sayin’
@vernwhittle39367 ай бұрын
The only reason I didn't turn off the coverage is because I wanted to see Nick Taylor win, otherwise wouldn't watch. Have never liked this tournament because of rowdy fans. Will doubt if I ever watch it again. These aren't golf fans - just drunken partyers.

The players have the control. Since this isn't a signature event, the top players don't have to attend. The top 50 can send a notice to the tournament board asking for change or they won't play. It becomes a high level Corn Ferry event.

I dont want to see the Waste management change, in fact golf needs more of it IMO, However a couple of points, the weather had an impact, the facility cant handle those crowds in wet conditions and they have to reduce numbers if bad weather is predicted, just sell light beer and no spirits, with those numbers of people you will always get a few idiots. Be more vigilant with security to throw them out with the consequence of a life ban from all golf tournaments world wide. (Im sure that all tours could agree on that) Dont let a few morons ruin it for everyone else.
@mkmatto747 ай бұрын
Easy fix. Increase the price, limit the amount of people to attend. After a certain amount of people alcohol gets regulated. Finally, if you over do it you get a faaaaat fine. Everybody needs the money.
@joewilson12957 ай бұрын
This tournament and the 16th hole in particular has been heading towards this sort of carnage for years. I think a lot of factors as you have laid out in the video conspired to make things so bad this year. Unfortunately it can be just as bad here. I have been to many Opens over the years but the amount of people at St Andrews for the 150th Open who were simply there to get drunk and who were not interested in watching any golf whilst openly urinating into the gorse bushes was disgusting. And they do this whilst thinking nobody can see them 🤦♂️
@JohnHubbard-j2s6 ай бұрын
Definitely out of control. Too many people going to the tourney just to get crazy. Are we heading towards golf hooligans? Get back to golf fans having fun and keep the 16th for a bit of over the top.
@briansmith21257 ай бұрын
This is all from the Tiger Woods effect. Golf became a NASCAR event when he came on the scene back in the 90's. I had attended the Masters both before Tiger, and after. Totally different experience in a really disgusting way. It's not his fault per se, but he saw it happen too. Heckling almost ALL of the other players whether they were in contention or not.

@robertpeters69237 ай бұрын
When you get that many drunks at one place crap like this happens.. I don’t even watch it anymore. They ought to do away with it. They won’t because of the money it generates. The PGA ought to step in and shut the whole thing down. What a clown show.
