Good info. You were right about the crack. I followed step by step instructions. One detail left out, in my experience, after the disposal is reinstalled don’t be alarmed if it still leaks. You may need to purge the remaining water that is sitting in the bottom of the disposal.

Holy smokes, it worked!! I am NOT the best handyman - If I can do this, anyone can! My disposal looked rough - I gave it a 10% chance this would actually work. Once the epoxy fully dried and installed everything back together, there were a couple drips. After day 3, nothing dripped again! And, it was pretty cool to dig into the workings of a garbage disposal, this was new territory for me. Thank you for this video, I really appreciate it!!

I would only recommend this fix if you are tight on money. It is a temporary fix for the same reason autobody mechanics dont like to repair rusty side panels on a car/truck. Once the rust has formed, it will continue rusting, and whatever you coated the metal with will flake off. I always recommend paying more for the higher grade models with stainless steel internals and a longer manufacturer warranty. And btw, plumbers from get tired from having to change garbage disposal’s. Those jobs are easy! We get tired from digging trenches, crawling and working in tight crawlspaces, and moving heavy bulky plumbing appliances and fixtures! We don’t take it personal though haha

I bought the seal as instructed and applied it. Let it sit for like 8 hours was sealed and dry. I filled the sink up twice, issued the drain a few times.. Would getting a stainless steel unit in any way protect the garbage disposal from the effects of hot water? (especially the O Ring and the motor seal) I think ''hot'' water that is also ''hard water'' in Las Vegas is the reason why I only get about 3 years out of my garbage disposals that use galvanized parts, and I heard stainless steel is better, but how is that better if in my case where I live it's the O Rings and Motor seals that are the weakest points ?

I would never in a million years have expected your garbage disposal to start leaking underneath, and mine isn't ancient by any means. Mine was dripping for who knows how long and eventually started raining, ran down into a metal toolbox I had in the basement and ruined all the tools. As well as soaking all the floorboards. Isn't that nice. While I appreciate this fix, I feel like you may as well just replace the garbage disposal unit. Eventually another part is going to rust through, and I have had nothing but issues with JB Weld staying in place and not breaking off. When one looks at the rust, one wonders why they would not simply make the grinding wheel stainless steel? And the only answer I can think of is planned obsolescence. Does anyone know of a disposal being sold that has a stainless grinder wheel inside, that won't rust through eventually?
@don_wynn

That was horrible what happened to you, I couldn’t imagine. And yes, the best option is to replace the entire unit. When this happened to me, I was in a panic and I didn’t know what to do. Nope. This is just asking for trouble. You broke a factory seal (and didn't install a new seal) and still have a rusted bottom plate. You might temporarily fix the unit but more problems will come up sooner and be worse the next time around. Unfortunately, the manufacturers behind this type of equipment intentionally do not engineer them to last. A better design would be to encase the metal plate in a coating that would provide a superior sealant for the housing that would allow the unit to function for decades with minimal to no rust. These units are engineered from day one to fail. Frankly, I'm a bit shocked that building codes allow these to be installed in homes. Water and electricity don't mix! Granted, the windings around the motor are shielded, but it wouldn't take much to cause a short and start an electrical fire.

I live in an old apartment complex. I've had several leaks coming down through the my ceiling from the apartment above, over the course of several years, as well as having experienced, gurgling and foaming toilet bowl incidences, and sudden instances of dripping faucets...out of the blue. Suffice to say, I have endured too many leaky situations over the years...to feel settled about. Consequently....from time to time, the unit above me would summon a plumber, and things would be okay for a while, then before I knew it....another leak. Most recently....I was using the kitchen garbage disposal and had the light above the sink on as well. I have never experienced anything wrong with the operation of the sink or disposal, sans brownish water and the tainting of my water faucet with white spots. All has been functional aside from those two factors. All of a sudden....the disposal stopped working and the light went out. After some research, I found that both of the outlets...on the wall of the disposal and light....were out cold, meaning, no juice at all. Even after I had toggled the GFCI buttons, and checked the breakers, which were found to be in the correct position. Nonetheless, for good measure, I toggled the breakers as well. This happened on Wednesday. Thursday, I woke up to find that 'miraculously' not only did the disposal work, but the light above the sink and the two wall outlets....were working perfectly, and I hadn't touched a thing. Today is Friday, and the only repercussion from Wednesday's incident is that the disposal is still dripping. I have a coffee can underneath to catch all. It seems to be dripping at a reasonable rate and not pouring. The day that my outlets, disposal, and lights stopped working....I could hear that the upstairs unit was undertaking some kind of plumbing fixes. Being home, and the units being old and poorly constructed...I can 'hear' lots...For instance...it often 'sounds' like the water from upstairs coming down my wall between the bathroom and the kitchen. It's very loud, and was even shocked the first time I noticed it, and took a video, just to capture the loudness of the water I could hear from the wall. With all that I have relayed........Do you think that it's possible....that the plumbing issues coming from the unit above all these years, as well as their 'attempts' to fix the plumbing....probably with non-professionals....are affecting my unit. Please respond if you can. So....my story...is not a fun story. I seem to get the brunt of leak after leak...with a not-very-responsive landlord ( the unit above) that lives out of state and has, in the past, tried to make light of the leaking issues. My feeling is that he is renting as section 8, has owned the unit for many years, and obviously....does not care too much about the leaks I have experienced....as well the huge inconvenience...time and time again. What are your thoughts...about the continuous plumbing problems, and....my recent incident with the garbage disposal.....et al?????? Thanks so much...if you have a clue!!!!

Wow, that's torturously difficult to read. Please try paragraph breaks--and maybe gather your thoughts by outlining a lengthy story like this into an email draft or something, where you can copy/paste to a YT comment. It would help avoid the rambling--which will be more likely to get you help. Your power could have been cut by workers above you--if you're downstream from a breaker in the other apartment--and then it worked later after they turned it back on. That's not an ideal wiring scenario...but many installations are far from ideal. I'm unclear on whether your disposal is still leaking. The technique in this video may help you fix it, but we can't make that assessment for you. Me personally, after watching this and another vid I'm heading to Lowe's for a new one. If I spend the time removing and re-mounting a disposal, I want to know I'm not doing it again for several years. The dripping sounds you hear could be problems, but they also could be normal plumbing. Your neighbor's sink or toilet is likely to come down the top of the same drain pipe that's in your wall. If that wall doesn't have insulation in it, this can be surprisingly loud. If your relationship with the landlord is truly a case of chronic neglect, it may be something worth discussing with an attorney. If not, it may be better to simply move and be done with the headache of an apathetic manager. Good luck.

same issue here, but mine gave out today and as I'm learning here on KZbin what happenned, one thing stands out, ''Hot Water'' not sure how big an impact this has but if that doesn't make sense, what if your water is very ''hard'' ie corrossive like our water in the Las Vegas area, either way, the thing I'm wondering is, why would a stainless steel model be more resistant to these type of leaks? I don't see why they would, but that's what some say is the problem, your average garbage disposal has galvanized steel, but to me that does not explain all of it, I've had some garbage disposals with light use last less than 3 years.

That model doesn't last long, the cheapest, better replace that with an stainless inside parts. That fix won't last because the steel material is already rusted, you are wasting your time. Don't follow his advice, very bad advice. I own an apartment and I replace all that model with Costco American Std on sale 60 bucks, lower price than that model. Last minimun of 7 years. That model last only 1 year and weak motor.

Mine is 7+ years old and just started leaking. From your experience, maybe it is just abuse from renters on why they only last a short period of time. No need to say this method won't work.

My house has this same exact garbage disposal when I moved in (2014) and up until this week in May 2024. It started leaking from the bottom exactly like this video. So wrong, they don’t last 1 year
