@@corneilmadison141 its not prayer its leadership and respect of self, authority, and community. The reason that clark was able to change the school because he gave a damn and was serious. He was just angry at them but angry for them. He showed them that they were worth something and took as much energy and time as he could to devout himself and his staff to the students problems. You have to invest yourself and sacrifice. Kanisha hit the nail on the head at the meeting when she said clark was like a father to some them because he wanted them to succeed more than getting a big check or accolades. No other teacher/staff at the school had that type of alpha male dedication and care. Either too scared, followers, or collecting a check.... When I was in high school, our principal was like Morgan Freeman's character in this movie, intimidating to look at, but easy to talk to. His name was William Huizinga, and he stood about 6'4" tall, and weighed about 250 pounds. Every day, he could be seen walking around the school in a suit and tie, and hamming it up with whoever he came across, whether they were a teacher, or a student. He was always at home sporting events, wearing his loggers gear, loggers was what our teams were called. When I graduated high school in 2001, I went to shake his hand, and he said, "the day I shake your hand is the day you show me your driver's license." A few years later, after I got my driver's license, I saw him after my brother's graduation commencement, and I said, "I believe we had a deal." He looked at me with a stunned look on his face, so I said, "you remember when you told me a few years ago that the day you shook my hand was the day I showed you my driver's license?" Let's just say he fulfilled his end of the deal right then and there. A few months later, I read about his cancer diagnosis, and when I called the school to ask about him, I was informed that he had died. Now, if you were to go to Onalaska (Washington) high school, you'll see a brick garden around the school sign, and right next to where Mr. Huizinga would park his car, you'll see a plaque that contains one of his favorite sayings, "It's A Great Day To Be A Logger." Rest in peace, Bill. We miss you, man.

There's a bigger principle of leadership in this scene that I really enjoy. To this point, Mr. Clark (Morgan Freeman) has been trying to get his vision of Eastside High to the "roots" of the school - the students, teachers, community, etc. That's why he's such a hard a** at the beginning - as the saying goes, "do the right things, and feelings/emotions will follow." He needed to change behavior before the heart could be changed. Mr. Clark wanted independent thinkers that wanted what was best for the school, not behaviors done because "we've always done them" (note: any educator knows what I'm talking about here.) At this point, Mrs. Powers took a risk that Mr. Clark wants to see out of everyone - a risk that leads to better students, a better school, and a better future for the kids. The exchange was, in his own way, realizing that. And a big reason why he's all chipper (for maybe the first time in the movie to this point) immediately after. Great leaders find ways to get their vision/mission into the hearts of those they lead so that the leader's vision becomes their follower's vision - and that's exactly what was described here in a mere four minutes.

You know why I loved men like Joe Clark? Because once upon a time, it was okay to DEMAND better. Not just ask for it, or hope for it. But EXPECT it. That school (Eastside High) improved because he was a taskmaster who DEMANDED those students be better than the expectations the outside world and maybe (mostly?) they had for themselves. When you have people's best interest in heart and mind, you should be pushing them to strive to be more than they are. We need that back.

I think the moment at 3:30 was super important to note ! You can tell that he (Joe Clark) had a new feeling, a kind of hope for East side high - that fist thrust was because he saw his students shine and get excited about something and have pride in their school! The excitement he feels is because his students are becoming more excited! Even the staff was looking at him in an odd fashion because he’s (Joe Clark) isn’t usually that enthusiastic or upbeat while walking the halls of the school- and That to me is the most powerful part of this whole sene ! LOVE the harmony and that we can hear the young men singing in the background after he delivers the line to Mrs. Powers

if I remember correctly they filmed it at the real eastside and most of the background actors were actual current and former students and teachers. The thing they changed for the movie was the school about to be taken over by the state. In real life that wasn't reality UNTIL the REAL mr clark left. 1.5 years after he left it got taken over

Magical thing about this scene was the fact that it was his 1st(Mr. Clarke's) time hearing that version. Then to realize that the music teacher, Mrs. Powers had made something out of his young men that who knew only needed some true guidance and sense of direction. He amazed at the talent that he's witnessing from which many in the neighborhood possibly considered a lost cause. Magnificent scene!
