How I would approach wet and muggy conditions and a shelter is needed quick in the Florida Swamps.

All you need is saw palmetto and you can survive you can use that plant for everything, shelter, fire starting, fans, and even food!

Only problem is wasps really like to hang out in the cabbage palm, which I learned the hard way, but other than that, great video

Give me a break !!!!!!! You are in Florida at the edge of a swamp and a Hurricane is coming. So you build a lean to for survival in a cabbage palm hammock. Well that might be a good idea since the winds would keep the mosquitoes away while it blows you into the next county. I've been here 74 years and have done a lot of camping in those years. A tent is nice in the winter for that 2 week period. The rest of the time ( a tent is a sweat lodge ) the best thing for my use is a good mosquito proof hammock. One that the bugs can not bite threw the bottom material and the netting over you. There are three different manufactures making double bottom hammocks. Plus by being suspended ( Not in a Hurricane ) the 360 degree ventilation tends to keep you cool. "O" by the way I have camped in two different hurricanes and not by my choice , mother nature dealt me those hands. The meanest critter I have found in the woods of Florida walks on two feet and usually gets to an area in a vehicle it drove.

Enjoyed your video. I liked that you didn't waste a lot of time (like I would) building your shelter to be "perfect". You kept the lashing and the hook on the shingles simple and the way you used the two palms to support your frame really simplified things. The limbs on the back to hold the shingles in place was cool too. Thanks for posting.

Real like your videos good skills to know. Wow so many people think Florida is a swap in a sinkhole. So much to do here if you don't need mountains. I like tents not a hammock fan just to much work. Then can be a bit lighter but I camp for the most part out of my kayak so a bit of weight I can deal with. I have Eureka Timberline A frame tents, a 2 man and a 6 man(mostly for car camping). I have found here this works best for me. I also set up a tarp shelter too. I have used both hammocks and dome style tents here and have found the A frame set up correctly gets the most air flow and in turn keeps you cooler. I have been out for a few day of camping and had rain almost the whole time and be able to get in a tent and move around is huge. Also I have been paddling and found very limited camping at times like on a sand bar where setting up a hammock just would have never happened. When I was a kid and lived in Ohio we would use hammocks and not the high tech like today it would be the one out of the back yard and a sleeping bag in the summer and some plastic sheet over you if it rained lol and a tent in the winter. We called them season tents because they were so cheap that they only lasted a season. I Ohio there are bugs but it was not till I moved here that you really know what bugs are. People always say stuff about the gators and I tell them its not the big stuff I worry about its the some stuff here that will tear you up. Thanks again for some great videos

I did a 12 day Everglades and 10,000 canoe trip and it rained 11 , 1/2 days of that trip. My tent ( Eureka Timberline ) flooded and I was wishing I would of had my hammock with me. Plus by being suspended the 360 degree ventilation tends to keep you cool. When I camp with friends I do not need a flat spot , a dry area , a root free area or any thoughts about the ground. I let the guys find their spots for the tents and then I hang my hammock. I usually have the hammock and rain fly up before they finish putting their tents up. It boils down to one thing , Different Strokes for Different Folks. If everyone did the same how boring would that be ????

👍🔫🇺🇸🆒, I hope I never need the knowledge from your video here, but still it was interesting to watch, SO THANKS, Wish you the best of luck with the Florida life style that if not for the fishing in your state cannot figure out why anyone would give Florida a moment of consideration for spending your life there. 🆒🇺🇸🔫👍

What kind of sleeping setup would you recommend for camping in Florida? Tent, hammock or tarp and mosquito net?
@Rambooutfitters
@Rambooutfitters 7 жыл бұрын
Hammock for sure with a mosquito net and tarp. That is all I ever used and it is lightweight. In the winter you just need a mummy sack for extra. Definitely get a net though because if the mosquitoes don't get you the no see ums will. Basically wings with teeth.

A combination of clothing, smoke, beauty berry leaves and/or wax myrtle leaves. If really bad I'll stick a huge palm leave over my face. They can get nasty back there

Mixing coals and ash from a fire with water, you can apply it as face paint, works as bug repellant and sunscreen too

@@Rambooutfitters I notice a lot of people use a wireless lapel mic or sometimes called a Lavalier mic. Rode makes some. There a many manufacturers of these. www.rode.com/microphones/lavalier Another option is use this type of mic with a headset frame to hold it in front of your mouth so its the same distance all the time no matter where your head is.
