I've said it before and I'll say it again, Mark Owen is the George Harrison of Take That, criminally underrated songwriter who was capable of writing songs on par, if not better than Gary and Robbie's songs. He, much like George, was the first of Take That to release a solo album. The parallels are a little maybe contrived, but they are there.

I am an American who would've never heard of him or this song (much like I knew nothing about Robbie Williams until I visited the UK) except the school I work at does a special math program and they play the chorus of this song when the kids have 4 minutes left to warn them to finish up and clean up. Great tune about an admittedly dark subject that made me think.

This is a great song, it’s subject matter and lyrical references really resonated with me as a Gen X kid who grew up in the shadow of the Cold War and a very real possibility of the 4 minute warning at any time. I had to explain this all to my boyfriend (15 years my junior) when he noticed the hairs on my arms standing up whilst listening to this when I was driving us up the A1 to see his mum! Top it all off; I’m a metal head and I truly love this song!

M dad was in the Royal Air Force and we were stationed In RAF Laarbruch at the time at the height of the Cold War in 1983. When the sirens went off especially at night everybody’s house lights went on and the men all put there protective clothing. We were unsure if this was an exercise or the prelude to war. I was only a teenager and got into such a state terrified. 😢😢🇬🇧🏴

Lyrics [1st Chorus] 4 minutes left to go, is this the end, then? Message on your stereo, four minute warning Everybody wants to know, what should we do then? A few short stories, a four minute warning [Verse 1] Sasha stands in his yellow cafe Yes, the heart of the city is here, so he tells me Sitting on his red leather sofa, he's rolling another "Man, I'll see ya when I see ya" Polly is said to be the next big thing In her high-heeled boots and her two-inch earrings Heart of glass, Blondie sings in her ear You're a rock queen, honey, and we all hear you Come on! [2nd Chorus] 3 minutes left to go, is this the end, then? Message on your stereo, four minute warning Everybody wants to know, what should we do, then? A few short stories, a four minute warning [Verse 2] Lucy had a hard time with love But love recently chose the right time for Lucy Loving when you know it's the final time She now holds time in her own mind Yeah, Jimmy's is the local for Michael A Guinness in one hand, in the other a fable, able I once asked: "Are you a lonely man?" His reply was non-committal: "I am what I am, man." [3rd Chorus] 2 minutes left to go, is this the end, then? Message on your stereo, four minute warning Everybody wants to know, what should we do, then? A few short stories, a four minute warning [Bridge] Cry, laugh, feel love, peace, panic These are your four minutes (I'm counting you down, four minutes of sound It's always a rush when you're around) [Verse 3] The final story is one of me Who with four minutes left has used up three I think of you, I think of me Then I think of nothing, it's the end, you see Yeah! [4th Chorus] 1 minute left to go, is this the end, then? Message on your stereo, four minute warning Everybody wants to know, what should we do, then? A few short stories, a four minute warning [Outro] 30 seconds left to go, is this the end, then? Message on your stereo, four minute warning Everybody wants to know, what should we do, then? What would you do, what would you do, yeah? With a four minute warning, a four minute warning I'm fading away, I'm fading away...If anybody wants to know I'm fading away, I'm fading away...There's only seconds left to go

The four minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operated between 1953 and 1992. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the point at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets. The population was to be notified by air raid sirens, television and radio, and urged to seek cover immediately.

Man why is he so underrated as a solo artist from Take That and why do they only have the second solo album on sportily and not his 1st, 3rd, and 4th album. Nobody has a unique voice like him that I know. Mark Owen is incredible and not to mention a genius songwriter he is way overlooked and not appreciate for his rare talent. Gary also only has his solo debut album where are his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th album not on Spotify as well?

Totally agree. He is a brilliant songwriter. He could have just followed up his Take That success with standard ballads and pop songs. But I find his songs very different to mainstream pop songs with incredible lyrics. I can't understand - the fans who loved Take That didn't transfer that love to his solo efforts.
