As a kid in Omaha Nebraska my first exposure to the rhotic R in England was on the television show Long John Silver starring Robert Newton. The stories were set in the West country and Newton happily and cunningly obliged with lots of arrrgh's. I was too young to realize it was a regional accent played to the hilt but every American kid was mesmerized by Long John. As you'll know most of the US is rhotic except for parts of the South and upper East. English fascinates me.

My favorite area of England is Humberside (West of Hull like Welton/Ferriby) and you don't hear it as much when talking about Yorkshire as you do the typical Northern Moors type accent from Secret Garden. There is a lot of Yorkshire accents in the downstairs characters on Downton for instance but that is supposed to be representative of the Ripon and Thirsk area. I would love to see a comparison between secret garden/downton abbey north, Leeds, Sheffield, and Hull.

As someone who lives in the west country (Wiltshire) it's amazing some of the subtle differences you can hear between Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Bristol. In a similar way, when I lived in London for 6 years I was eventually able to detect subtle differences between north, south and east London accents.
@LoveEnglishUK5 ай бұрын
Oh yes definitely I agree. I live in Dorset so I know the differences quite well but in a 20 minute video with people with very short attention spans these days it would be hard to have time to go into all those differences!

Hiya: Once upon a time I heard you suggest that the Beatles' accents had 'softened' as they were exposed to life in London but I have a different take on that. There are two distinct Liverpool accents: North of the city centre in Vauxhall, Kirkdale & Everton there was a huge influx of Irish (and some Welsh) in the late 19th century who were forced to live in very overcrowded conditions and were bottom of the pile when it came to jobs. The Scouse accent there became very guttural and harsh especially with words like 'chicken', or 'coke'. We used to call it the "Scottie Road Accent" and it was a hallmark of the poor, ill-educated, working-class. I lived up the road in Orrell Park: we were much 'posher'. LOL. South of the city centre the accent was not modified by this sudden influx and retained its softer more sing-song nature. THAT was the area from which the Beatles came and even George & Ringo, working class lads from Toxteth, sounded relatively less harsh. My Dad suggested that the harsh pronunciation came from North Dublin. Kind regards, John
@LoveEnglishUK Жыл бұрын
I am sure you are right! I agree very much about the differences across the various districts of Liverpool. I lived in Childwall until I was 5 so I always had a slightly ‘posher’ scouse accent. But the intonation across the whole city and even the surrounding area is similar and very distinctive compared to other UK accents.

Sabrah would be awesome if you explain to us about the history of 🇬🇧 in a nutshell , I know it’s a lot of tell but I think you would do it quite great , it’s amazing how a group of islands conquered 1/4 of the world , be key in winning ww1 and ww2 and be the father of amazing nations such as 🇺🇸 , 🇦🇺 , 🇨🇦 and 🇳🇿, isn’t that curious that most of the nations that were once British colonies are first world countries 🤔, please consider that lesson my queen , I would bend the knee if you ask me ❤️. Arhh!! How can a Brit even not understand that there isn't just ONE accent in London! The east end accent is very distinct and not even close to say a North London accent. South London again has a different twist to it. Granted most people who didn't live or grow up in London may not be able to hear the more subtle differences between North, South and West London, but none of them sound even remotely close to East "cockney" London accents. Not to mention that the cockney accent is actually only spoken in a relatively small area of East London is is absolutely NOT representative of the accent the vast majority of Londoners have. I can excuse this level of ignorance from a foreigner, but a fellow Brit? Sorry no, inexcuseable!
@LoveEnglishUK Жыл бұрын
I do understand very well but this video is aimed at people who speak English as a second language and you can only teach so many accents in one video! Also ‘cockney’ is the accent they have seen in TV shows such as Eastenders so of course they ask about it.

The thing I find funny is, all of these British accents and affectations, especially in the south of England are relatively new. Americans actually speak more pure English than the British, while the north of England and Ireland and Scotland maintain their original accents. RP is really just a snotty way of speaking rhotic, American English. The people who defeated the king actually speak the kings, English, lol.
