Really glad there’s someone like Hugh who appreciates the true 360 immersive experience. Heard so many people knocking this format and completely pushing the 2D reframing route. It certainly has it’s place but creative 360 imaging in VR googles is just magic! I’m a scientist who explores the ocean floor using remotely operated robotic vehicles and a few years back a colleague from MIT put a 360 video camera on the front of the ROV. I watched the footage on a set of VR googles and was instantly hooked!

Thank you Steven. Wow I want to see that footage. Underwater VR is absolutely amazing. Very challenge and very expensive (good deep underwater is usually 10 time more expensive than the camera itself). I would love to learn more how MIT did it and science research use in 360VR!

Unfortunately I don’t have the footage. His name is Alan Adams at MIT and he has been doing a lot with VR. The challenge for the deep sea work is the high pressure housing as it must withstand depths up to 3000 ft. You can find him on Google.

Most excellent work! I’d be lying if i said I wasn’t disappointed that GoPro doesn’t have a good way of doing this natively. I record fishing outings with the max because when something interesting happens, its not usually where the camera’s pointed. My outings range between 4 and 10 hrs long making a single outing an almost unmanageable amount of data. But my goal was to edit out 99% of the uninteresting footage and publish the interesting stuff, giving the viewer the ability to look wherever they wanted. This has proven to be considerably more difficult than i was expecting. But this is a great video man, and you’re spot on...very few deal with this, so well done!

What an amazing channel, I just uploaded a video today and used your techniques towards the end of the video when I shot with the GoPro Max. Thank you so much! I didn't see this in the comments, but when exporting as h.265, it doesn't load either on Facebook or my computer (which is new and fast). Instead I have to export as h.264, any tips for this?

Thank you! And yes, H.265 is a newer codec that not many player support it unless you install the codec package. It will work for KZbin. It should work for Facebook - but your computer it depend on your codec installing (VLC). But for the widest supprot - I actually still suggest H.264. If you can use X.264 - it can get pretty good quality as well.

@seangross5663 Жыл бұрын
Hi Hugh. Thank you for the video. It was one of the only ones that I could really seem to follow along and get similar results. I had couple questions. I tried to create a short sample 360 video. As a frame of reference I was wearing the 360Max on top of my head. When I export the video and watch it there are 2 issues that I encounter. First, the video starts out zoomed in where while watching it I have to scroll my mouse wheel to zoom out and get a better video viewing experience. Second the video starts out facing the way I am looking, but when I turned around the camera view stayed facing the same way unless I grab the screen and rotate. So my 3 questions: 1) Is there a setting I can change when in Premier to have the video start zoomed out more and 2) Is there a setting I can change to have the screen auto rotate when my head turns to look, or is that just the way the 360 render works (it stays put and allows viewer to rotate as they see fit? 3) If I wanted to have the camera view point change with my head or body movement would I have to create separate clips at those moments and then add them and stitch them all together in premier? Thanks again for your helpful video.
@gregleblanc9357 Жыл бұрын
I'm having the same issue of the video's forward view not following the cameras forward view when I turn. Like on a motorcycle, camera facing straight forward but if you turn left, the camera angle is now looking towards the right side instead of forward to the direction the camera turned.
@gregleblanc9357 Жыл бұрын
I think I found the solution to the camera angle tracking. If you want the view to follow the camera angle, then during the initial 360 conversion process used in GoPro Player's Batch Export, you have to turn "World Lock" Off. If you think about it, with world lock turned on, the world view stays constant as the camera turns so you continue looking in the same direction from a world view. With world lock off, it allows the view to turn with the camera angle. I'm trying that now.

Hey Hugh, great video! This is the only video I could find that properly tackles the question of export settings for the Max 360, so it was a tremendous help! Question for you: You mentioned in the video that so long as you're below 5.7k in monoscopic, you're good for YT, Facebook and Oculus. My footage is 5,760 source. I did a test clip at these settings and it worked on KZbin video-wise, though the audio was lagging behind (might be an issue on my end). So my question is, what were you warning about in the video: Keeping it under 5.7 so it works on all 3 platforms; keeping it under 5.7 for audio reasons; keeping it under 5.7 was an issue from when this video was made (Nov. 2019) but not any longer, or something else I'm missing. Thanks for your time and looking forward to learning more from your videos!
@hughhou4 жыл бұрын
I believe it is bitrate issue not resolution issue. 5.7K is fine on all platform - but if you video has lots of motion - you bitrate might be causing the off sync audio - the headset got too much to figure out. Try to drop the bitrate around 60Mbps with H.265 to see if this solve the issue. You should also check out this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3Oqm6Fqp9J5gLc

cineform is like ProRes of DNxHR - a intermediate codec for editing. So it should NOT use mp4 as container. It should use .mov as container - which is editor friendly. So no Cineform for mp4. If you need mp4 for direct posting - choose H.264 or H.265.

I have a question: once you output the 6ch .Wav file from Audacity, you say "You can use Premiere, Resolve, or any video editing program to mux your video with audio" Will I be able to input the 6ch .wav (4ch 1st order ambix + 2ch headlock master) into Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 properly, and then export the final video properly? Also can I input a 4ch 1st order ambix into premiere, and on the same sequence add the headlock master, without the files needing to be combined in audacity first? I am under the impression Premiere can take up to 8ch wavs, but can only output 4ch ambisonic. So I am assuming it takes the 6ch .wav (4ch 1st order ambix + 2ch headlock master) and interpolates it correctly so that although it outputs only 4ch, the Headlock lock master and Ambisonics are still intact. Is that a correct assumption?
@hughhou3 жыл бұрын
Sorry might not be clear on that one - NLE like Premiere only support up to 4 channel audio - so you will need DAW support multi-channel audio. The safest bet is to use the FFMPEG - everyone including Oculus / KZbin is using it. And my Ambix tutorial explain the workflow really well.

At 20:28 you show the Bitrate Settings. Since I am exporting another 360 video right now, I stumbled across that "Quality: Good" dropdown menu. Okay, maybe this is a dumb question, but how many action cameras do you need to film VR-quality footage? I'm aware that you Likely need to utilize a "360° lens," but do you need two cameras (front & back)? If you linked multiple cameras together (6+) would you get a sharper video? Would that still require 360° lenses, or would you use narrower PoVs and stitch it together somehow? (I've recorded/edited plenty of traditional footage. Looking to start filming VR at the track from the interior of a car.)

I am using adobe premiere pro 2021 beta with gopro max footage I converted to hevc (120mbps) from the gopro player app. The footage is of a live-streamed concert I shot (I also control all visual design for the band: lights/video). Everything moves very fast as is very dynamic. I added titling and intro music via premiere pro, and when I output at the same resolution either via premiere pro directly or adobe media encoder, a bit rate of 60mbps is the max bitrate I can use with hevc. I am noticing the quality isn't the same as the original hevc file. I am guessing because the original bitrate was at 120mbps, and when I output it via premiere pro, it's at 60mbps. When I try to set it to software encoding and 120mbps vb1 it takes over 30 hours vs 1.5 hours using hardware encoding. How can I render this 8 minute video to an hevc 120mbps bitrate, but keeping all the edited sequences I made in premiere?
@hughhou3 жыл бұрын
So the trick is make sure your SOURCE video is as high quality as possible with NO COMPRESSION. HEVC is heavy compressed video format - you need Cineform following this tutorial or my GoPro FX reframe plugin tutorial - you need to work on uncompressed Cineform to HEVC then you are not round trip it. Very important point of this tutorial. It should solve your issue but let me know if it still having issue. On render - try FFMPEG if speed is an issue!

You want 360 video more zoom out? 360 Video the final output is nature view - from the point of view of your camera. ONE X3 or GoPro MAX - there final output is nature view without distortion. Insta360 Stitcher render out 360 video also is not zoom out. The Preview prob is for reframe not 360 render. Unless you use Mantra to wrap your video FOV in After Effects.

Hugh, have you ever looked at the different platforms (KZbin, Facebook, VeeR, SamsungVR, Littlstar, etc) and done a image quality analysis for the Go/Quest and their apps? I have my own ideas (KZbin is pretty sucky!) and would love to hear what other creators think.
@hughhou5 жыл бұрын
Haha yes KZbin is no good. But I am a KZbinr so I have no way around it. I getting lazy on VeeR and SamsungVR keep bugging me to move to them. I just need time to upload everything. Then Facebook - Oculus Video or Oculus TV should be everyone else #1 platform just b/c it will be the best for Oculus Go and Oculus Quest in term of comparability, direct targeted render, and all the sharing feature. It is a bigger tutorial but will be a really good one. It is still in close beta now for TV so waiting for that. Stay tuned
@morningcalm3605 жыл бұрын
@@hughhou I wasn't too impressed with Oculus Media Studio for distributing. You need to have all the information (thumbnail, 2D trailer) ready before scheduling release. Fewer features than Facebook (for now anyway). Maybe Oculus TV is after a higher clientele of uploaders and I need to up my game to meet their platform requirements. As you said though, it takes time handling such huge file uploads, especially when you are on the road using the camera all the time. I guess your tutorial will be perfect for me!! Oculus TV is the walled 360 garden while everyone is buying Oculus headsets. I want to get to those PSVR wearers though as well though! And then the Apple VR wearers...etc. I guess you can only go where the wind currently blows.

Hugh - been religiously following your videos but even after following all your procedures my exports from Premiere Pro 2020 are pixelated and blurry, even compared to watching the proxy files on my source monitor while editing. I've heard whisperings that the GoPro Reframe FX is broken with Premiere 2020... It seems to work perfectly while I'm editing but when I export the video quality is terrible compared to exporting from Insta360 Studio. I'm using a One X. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@hughhou4 жыл бұрын
Did you see my latest video? I use it in After Effects 2020 and the output in 4K 60fps (re-render in Premiere 2020) - I think I get the best image quality among all the GoPro MAX render - I think it look even better than GoPro official source: kzbin.info/www/bejne/noCmh3p_m7yJkLc - so I don't think there is a problem on the FX reframe plugin - but are you on the latest version tho? I think it has a recent update.
@TLTPhotography4 жыл бұрын
CreatorUp Thanks for the response. I think I figured out the blurriness issue, but the non-stitch workflow bringing my One X .insv files straight into Premiere and then exporting a 360 VR video via your settings (from your videos) I’m getting a bright green stitch line through the center of my exports. My workaround is this: I go through Insta360 Studio first, export at H265 extreme bitrate or 175mbps for individual files. Yes, it introduces a step of compression but the H265 files out of Insta360 Studio run smoothly in premiere without the need for proxies :). So, yes, I add a little compression but the H265 files from Studio are much smaller than the needed proxies when I import .insv straight into premiere and I don’t end up with a green stitch line upon export. This is a hobby for me on the side so I need a workflow that works smoothly without constantly monitoring updates for bug fixes, even if it means I lose a very small amount of quality with the extra compression step from Insta360 Studio. Hoping that Insta360 studio will have a Prores export option at some point... :)
