In todays lesson we will learn to solo with the g major scale. The G major scale is a powerful scale. We will also look at the G major pentatonic scale and how it compares with the g major scale. We will work with the G, E minor, C and D chords. They can be built using the g major scale. I will give you everything you need to solo over these chords in the key of G major. Here is a link for the G major scale positions. images.app.goo.gl/2pRmN2D4bGw.... And here is a link for the great backing track I used in the intro. • Guitar backing track i... . These are just a few tools to add to the tool bag but we all have a lot more work to do! So hopefully I will see you on the next one! Thanks for all your support!

Another great lesson. It's nice to be reminded periodically of the #1 thing I always forget: that scales can be played LINEARLY. It seems I fall into the same bad habit of confining myself into all those little "boxes," and rarely stretch out across one string. Thank you!

I really appreciate these lessons that I can understand. Being in the intermediate stages can be overwhelming. I can run a little but I don't where to run to the A minor pentatonic gets a little old when it's all you're doing. To me there's so much info for complete beginners and for Wes Montgomery. But the intermediate level is hard to find a good teacher. Until now. Thanks again.

Really nice lesson! You have a terrific style. Subscribed. Thinking out loud here with a comment...I've been working hard to get better at improvising in major keys, and for me it seem super important not just to locate the triads of the chords in the progression, but to also figure out how they map out onto the tonic major scale positions that lie underneath each of them. That allows you to instantly "go back" to the major scale notes in G after you've highlighted the notes of the triad that speak to the chord change. For example, at 11:23 when you go up to the e minor triad on the 12th fret and bend up to the E, you also know that the G major scale in the "G" position of CAGED (root notes on 1st, 3rd and 6th strings) sits right underneath that triad, allowing you to grab non-triad notes from the G major scale. Then right after that, you play the triads from C and D with the "country bends," and those triads, which come from the C shape of CAGED, also happen to sit nicely within that G major CAGED position. Are you thinking like this as you solo?
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Жыл бұрын
Hey Tom! Thanks a lot for subscribing! Honestly, I don’t use the CAGED SYSTEM but I certainly use the chord shapes to visualize the fretboard. By what you said, in this comment, you know exactly what to work on. That’s exactly how I look at it. First I would find the major or minor pentatonic scale that goes with the progression. Fill in the dots with the major or minor scale. And then like you said, lying right underneath all of that are the triad chord shapes. Sounds complicated but if you map it out, it will give you so much confidence. I’m excited that you’re making these connections because that’s what Guitar playing is all about. Keep rockin bro.😎

Great lesson Rusty! Thanks, I know it and understand it, but I just can't make it sound that good. Even though the notes of the G Major scale are in each chord, you are playing the notes of each chord as it comes around in the backing track. This is what I need to be able to anticipate and hear when it happens. Practice, practice, practice.
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Жыл бұрын
One great thing you can do is really anticipate the D chord. And highlight the F sharp note which is the third of that chord. The other three chords are so closely related that you can play the major scale or the major pentatonic over those 3 chords. Then when you get comfortable with that, anticipate. the C chord. Start with smaller steps before you try to anticipate all 4 chords! But you are right you just have to keep practicing and you will start to hear the changes! Thanks so much for your comment and all your support man✌️

Another great lesson Rusty I'm finding these tutorials so helpful as I learn to chord tone solo.......I have a couple of questions I hope you don't mind.........so I can use the major scale along with the major pentatonic? And I can also use the relative minor scale? Also what scale can I play over a song that's in a minor pentatonic key? Thanks so much for all your help.............Paul from 🇮🇪

Greetings from the USA! Yes you can definitely play the E minor scale also. They are the same notes as G major but just starting on the E Note. Most of the time he would be able to play the minor pentatonic and the minor scale of the route note of the first chord. But I haven’t done a lesson in a minor key for a while! I need to do it! Thanks Paul, hopefully this was helpful 👍

Very helpful Rusty.........I'm.gonna really apply myself to learning the triad chord shapes by practing them for an hour a day nothing else just triad chord shapes.........I need to get them into my muscle memory........il still practice other stuff later on but I can see how important they are........I can also see how important it is to write stuff down and keep track of the chords and the notes within the chords especially the thirds

Great video, however I would like to ask if it is possible to get tab's made up. I live in a very rural area without internet and have to travel to library a few towns over to watch vid etc... take notes a little bit at a time. Is it possible to get this lesson or future lessons along with tab?

Hey David, thanks a lot for checking out my lessons! Sorry I don’t have tabs. These lessons are definitely geared for someone sitting down with a guitar in their hand. Thanks a lot for the feedback and have a great week ahead buddy.👍

Around 7 minutes in you talk about playing the chords across the neck using certain shapes. Do you have any diagrams or advice to easily find them so I can practice ? It’s kind of hard to tell from the video. Great stuff and thank you

Thanks for checking out the video! Sorry I did not use diagrams. I just called out the notes on the G-B-E strings. If you just do a quick search on KZbin. For triads on the G-B-E strings. I do use diagrams on my more recent videos. Thanks again.👍

Rusty, great video man, thanks! Playing notes of the background chord makes perfect sense. However, I'm a little confused at around 9:05. Looks like you just switched to play over Em and are playing G and D on fret 3, (high E and B), and bending the A up to a B on fret 2 (G). That is a D, G, and B which is a G, not an Em. (E, G, B) What am I missing? Thank you so much, this is a great approach you have.
@rustysguitar1

You can always add the D note over the E minor chord. That is the minor seventh of the E minor chord. You can always interchange the triads of the G major chord and the E minor chord. Just adds a different color. I will continue to breakdown using triads in our solos. Thanks for the comment! Always appreciated 👍

@@rustysguitar1 Thanks! I guess I was locked into thinking you were only using notes from the 3 & 5 of the chord you're playing over. I see E min is the relative minor of G maj and shares the same notes so I get it now. Appreciate the response (and education)!

I struggle with trying to keep track of what chords are being played and then finding the right notes to correspond. My aging brain can't handle both.

What is the key to learning scales? Memory, pattern? Thanks
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Жыл бұрын
Try to memorize the notes on the low E and A strings first. This will help you know where the root notes are, to start the scales. Then just learn from there! Rock on buddy ✌️

Sorry, I only watched the beginning. But the beginning really drives home my point i was trying to make. People on the music theory group that i belong to argue with me that the first chord means that that is the key the song is. Try explaining to them that thats not necessary how it works and you are on your way to a frustrating argument. Thank you

I have a question for you. Why do you play the seventh in the major scale? If you play a song like sweet home Alabama and you play the major scale and add the seventh in there. It sounds awful.
