I kind of agree with this, I definitely feel conflicted. If everyone felt they should buy the real ones for customizing then yeah there would really be a shortage of the stock dolls for people who want them, sucks for people great for the company I’m sure.

I have just started to customize a few factory Blythes to practice on. The high cost prevents me from practicing on the stock dolls. I think for a collector, it is good to have different price options. I’ve seen some beautiful customized factory dolls with posable bodies, tilted heads, new eye chips etc.

I'm so glad you're taking this year to learn more about Blythe dolls! They have a rich history and nostalgia factor, as well as iconic features that many fashion designers love. One thing I wanted to point out is that they are actually not mass produced. Junko Wong stated in an interview herself that even the normal releases do not have very high edition sizes. As far as fakes go, I do not agree with them because they drive up the costs of official releases, but it is a very sensitive topic for some people. Other than customs, I recommend you check out some translucent blythe releases. They have nicer makeup and skin that resembles french resin in bjds. Its lovely!

Thank you so much for the input, I read that somewhere on a blog so it's good to hear that they really DO care and don't like the fakes. That's enough for me to steer clear of them 💜

I'm in the "it's okay" camp as far as fake Blythes goes (though not necessarily other dolls), primarily because there are limited numbers of each release. When someone customizes a stock Blythe, that is one less of those available for collectors. And, sadly, not everyone is good at customizing, so limited edition, expensive dolls get hacked up and destroyed. This means fewer stock dolls, and those left have crazy price tags on them. It took me forever to find an untouched Paradise Girl (for example) that I could wrangle up the $$ for. Fakes and fake parts (like just buying fake faceplates) provide a way for artists to practice. If Takara really had a problem with this, they could easily provide MIO kits like Groove does, or they could produce lower end (not just prima dolly but even lower than that) stock dolls for customizers to purchase. They choose not to do this. I know some collectors don't agree with me. I will duck now to miss any rotten fruit thrown my way ;) That said, I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding an amazing custom. There are so many talented Blythe customizers in this hobby.

@@MunecasPoupeesDolls here’s a thought too, what happens to all the talented artists if enough people feel they only want stock dolls for customization? The company will run out of stock fast and artists will start to lose business. I’m not as worried about the big company as I would be of all the artists out there that depend on these sales more so than the large corporation. This topic really got me thinking.

If you want a custom Blythe doll the majority of them are made from fake (TBL) Blythe dolls. If you use a real Blythe as a custom they are really really really expensive. I have three custom Blythes, and they were made by Russian artists, using fake Blythe dolls. The dolls have sleepy eyes, (2 pull strings for the eyes) rotating necks, boggled gazed corrective eyes, with new eye chips and decorated eyelids. Two of mine have mohair plug inserted wigs. There is no shame, or harsh feelings in the Blythe community for using fake Blythes for Customs, like there is with bjd’s. I love mine, and I’m sure you will really love them too! ❤️🌹

I have the fake Blythes because my granddaughters and youngest daughter all wanted them. As with the AG dolls we got the Target dolls to see if they could take care of them and still wanted one. So they are practice dolls. My granddaughters are under 10 and our yougest has special needs. So they can be rough on them.

I am not super knowledgeable about Blythe dolls but I have done a bit of research. I do own 3 fake Blythes, mainly because they are much cheaper. Also their hair is So long and full. I did get lucky however and scored a real 2004 Takara from ebay. I was able to get her cheaper due to to some light damage marks on her forehead but they are not immediately noticeable. Her official release name is Mademoiselle Rosebud. I am not bothered by the fakes, but love the real ones. If anything bothers me it is the customization, perhaps because it erases the original . I was very happy to see you doing a video on Blythe, there are not a lot out there and I appreciate your informative style.

I love my stock Blythe doll! I also love my Middie doll. I think something that you should know is that when buying stock dolls you always want to have a name attached to it. The best way to get stock dolls new is from Juniemoon or cctoys. Used you can get them from FB groups or mandarake. Be wary of large sites that have 'custom' dolls since they steal photos from artists and are either trying to sell an item that is already sold or acting as a drop ship site. I got a fake Middie Blythe from aliexpress and she really pales in comparison to my stock Middie.

I bought 2 Neo Blythe dolls from 'This is Blythe' on line, and to be honest, I thought they were real, but based on the Blythe doll community, This is Blythe are scammers. So although disappointed, I do love my dolls. Plus the fact that you can buy different skin tones and hair colour within the 'factory' products is a bonus for me. I did see your video from a while go, that you did in the Junie Moon store in Japan and found the lack of diversity off putting. Thanks for the video though, very informative. ❤

That was another thing I had considered is that there is really not very much diversity within the real Blythes which is unfortunate.

@@MunecasPoupeesDolls The only option for an authentic darker-skinned custom doll (meaning darker than Blythe's "mocha" color) is to find someone who can dye them which is very risky. Blythe's "tan" and "mocha" skin is still very light compared to other doll lines that have very noticeably dark skin.

Allison. I had a Blythe doll. I so remember that dress!! I also remember that her hair was a disaster; easily tangled; easily ruined. No doubt they've corrected them. As far as the "Fake" vs. "Authentic" I didn't learn about this being a big issue until I'd already purchased 2 "fakes" The cost of the real Blythe is pretty hefty and it's a shame they are priced outside of what people can afford. There are strong opinions out there and I've been disappointed by the antagonism that many doll collectors exhibit towards people who have fakes. I don't know how fakes affect the creators/company. I would have to check that out before deciding definitively where I stand on it but I don't know that I'd get too bent out of shape. Copies of everything out there exist including dolls. Individual artists should always be protected but I'm not sure how you can protect everyone and everything against copies.

I wouldn't buy a fake but I can understand customizers not wanting to change the collector dolls, it would be good if the company could sell blank dolls which would take away the argument for fakes, I'm personally not really a fan of the factory dolls especially the one's with shiny faces. The customs are amazing though but in the world of big headed dolls I'm definitely more of a Pullip person.

Fakes/factory are mass produced in china for customization. They use to mix parts back in the day with stolen doll parts but I dont think they do that no more. They do not use standard bodies at all like Takaras hardly ever, now. Generally, the fakes will have larger eye sockets. Morally, yes the fakes have alot of artwork, time and materials into the fake dolls and personally i do not like to customize the original dolls with the possibility of becoming very scarce plus its much more difficult on some scalps.

I personally probably wont ever add a Blythe doll to my collection because I find the face molds creepy for the most part but I still think about Patrickcustoms on instagrams lovely pastel Blythes. I feel when it comes to Blythe that it would be okay to have a fake because it doesn't directly effect any artist or company negatively since she is such a copied doll. That's just an opinion though and I know nothing else about copies of play line dolls except the funny monster high fakes. (My recast opinion is very pro artist leaning neutral. If someone accidentally buys a recast I dont think it's too big a deal as long as they make sure they buy legit in the future)

With Blythe fakes, so much work is done to transform the fake into a much more complex doll, that it becomes more of an artist doll than the mass-market copy it started as. Also, Blythe artists don't want to sacrifice a real Blythe to such a change which shows respect to the company, imo.

i would love to coin my own argument with the factory/fakes/clones! i think its a healthy discussion. 100% against counterfeit artists dolls, but i think tbls lie more on the spectrum of morally whatever than morally wrong or right. obviously copying and recasting to counterfeit is wrong, but takara is a big company also same with hasbro. they will not lose money anytime soon.
