Join Kaylee Taylor, Osheen Dubey, and Abigail Hewitt from Central Michigan University as they show us what a day as a neuroscience researcher that studies harmful algal toxins looks like! These researchers study microcystin, a toxin produced by cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. Symptoms of exposure to this cyanotoxin can include rashes, hives, or skin blisters (dermatoxic); and may result in liver damage (hepatotoxic), cancer (cytotoxic), and the death of livestock and pets that drink contaminated water (neurotoxic).
The goal of the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute Field Station is to enhance the health and stability of ecosystems in West Michigan by providing scientific information to support land management decisions. Our field station works with a consortium of colleges and universities from Michigan and Indiana to provide environmental research grants, natural resource fellowships, and creative arts fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students.
