The spider species Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the yellow garden spider, black and yellow garden spider, golden garden spider, writing spider, zigzag spider, hay spider, corn spider, or McKinley spider. It is common to the contiguous United States, Hawaii, southern Canada, Mexico, and Central America. It has distinctive yellow and black markings on the abdomen and a mostly white cephalothorax. Its scientific Latin name translates to "gilded silver-face" (the genus name Argiope meaning "silver-face", while the specific epithet aurantia means "gilded"). These spiders may bite if disturbed or harassed, but the venom is harmless to non-allergic humans, roughly equivalent to a bumblebee sting in intensity.[6]

I have 11 of these spiders that have or are laying eggs right now. Yes, 11. I'm on the coast of Virginia,, so it's still warm(78-80)I feed them...grasshoppers lol. And when I say grasshopper...3+" long, and there's plenty. The reason they eat the inside of the web is because it collects tiny bugs for nutrients, and is recycling in a manner. The zig is for all the reasons mentioned. Camouflage, deterent and recycling. Such beautiful ladies. 😍

Another theory for the zigzag 'stabilimentum' in the center, is that it might be UV reflective. If a larger creature passes by, the female garden spider starts bouncing her web, and the reflective silk catches their attention to alert the creature to avoid walking through her web.

If they feel threatened they will start rocking their webs back and forth. It's amazing to see. As kids we would tap them with sticks to make them shake their webs.

I moved to the south from Alaska for college and I remember riding my lawnmower right into one of these and it shook its web at me! Bwowowownnnngggg! Scared me so bad 😱 but after living there a while I knew that I had to make peace with them so I caught grasshoppers and tossed them into their webs as a peace offering. I think it worked cuz I never got surprised by one again after that

Old people used to tell us that if they wrote your name in their web you were gonna die. Also I think Charlotte's friend was an orb weaver. They're common in barns. I've never seen a writing spider in a barn, they're always outside.
