As Afrikaans is a young language and there are not many Afrikaans speakers, we do not have many dialects yet, but it is always better to learn the "standard" form of a language. I think Annemarie is doing a great job. Afrikaans is one of the world's 3 youngest languages. It started in 1652 and graduately develloped till it became an official language of South Africa in 1925. The first Bibel in Afrikaans appeared in 1933. We do not have Afrikaans dialects in South Africa, but we have several "regional" languages. The most important ones are those in Namaqualand (Northern Cape province); Cape Town (Western Cape province); and the latest one is the language young people in Gauteng (especially Pretoria) speak. They pronounce an "a" as "au", like in "author". They say:"Ons prôt Ôfrikôns in Trônsvôl" (We speak Afrikaans in Transvaal). And they say:"Ak blaai in maai haaisie baai die sia" (I stay in my little house at the sea). The correct pronunciation is:"Ek bly in my huisie by die see". Dutch = Ik. Standard Afrikaans = Ek. Cape Afrikaans = Ek (something between "ik" and "ek"). Pretoria Afrikaans = Ak (like in "accent").
@sue66266 жыл бұрын

Sumari Haasbroek, Ongelukkig is dit so dat "eerste indrukke is blywende indrukke". Ek ek vandag n ding verkeerd leer, sal ek dit oor 50 jaar steeds onthou. My = maai. Jy = jaai. Hy = haai. Sy = saai. Hulle = halla. Julle = jalla. Huis = haais.

What's wrong with wanting to learn to speak other languages regardless of how big or small they are? Why do you assume that nobody wants to learn a language because from your end it is spoken by a small fraction of people? People from the country normally speak a better Afrikaans than those from big cities. The Afrikaners in the cities are very much influenced by English. Their pronunciation is often wrong, and they like to translate directly. They also like to use "Anglisisms". When a foreigner wants to learn perfect Afrikaans, go to the countryside - to towns and villages - to learn proper Afrikaans.

Guy's as a South African don't worry too much about Afrikaans most people understand English lol(if thats the reason you're learning, just learn the basics and if you want to go on and learn perfect Afrikaans.)

Brand new to the language. I've studied a bit of dutch and German in the past but have only learned spanish with any real fluency. However my brief exposure to the two former languages definitely helps me draw patterns. Not many resources for this language. But as an Appalachian American I understand the importance of continuing culture and tradition and hope I can help keep this beautiful tongue alive. Best wishes to all on their journey to fluency. Until Valhöll.

@@ninjapirate123 to learn any language- just like learning cursive writing- develops one's intellectual discipline and enhances their ability to learn and use critical thinking skills. It is easier for someone to learn a language which is either spoken in their area, OR which has many similarities to the native language that they speak. It is harder for most English speakers, for example, to learn Russian, or Japanese, than to learn Spanish, Italian or Afrikaans. Hope this helps.
@ninjapirate1232 жыл бұрын
@@Julian-bq9qv You know what, I would rather learn a language spoken by a lot of people worldwide like Spanish than Afrikaans. Only about 3% of the world population speaks Afrikaans, it seems ridiculous to learn that language. And even if I did learn Afrikaans, I know that I'm never going to speak it in my whole life since I'm planning on moving to another country when I get older

I'm also Appalachian and love our culture and language. Did you know Dixie even has its own writing system now called Southern Script? It can be used to write Appalachian, Deep South, and other dialects of our beautiful language.

Exactly as I use to learn a new language when traveling. Get a small dictionary, pen and paper and start. Greeting, please, thank you, and 1 to 10, and you're off after the first day. Nowbody needs to learn those travel agency "basic" things as asking for the nearest taxi stand. You just stand in the street with a puzzled face and shout TAXI. Someone will help you. Now at least you can say dankie. Great video
