This is the first Japanese lesson I've ever watched and I'm so excited to finally learn Japanese. I'll try to update on how my Japanese is going every few months, I'm really determined to learn this language :) Edit #1: 07/24/23: I just learned all kana and I can now read any non-kanji text moderately quickly. I also just learned how weird Japanese grammar is and the existence of different vocabulary depending on how close you are to someone... This journey's gonna be tougher than I thought, but I won't let that discourage me, and it shouldn't discourage you, either 😁 Edit #2: 08/21/23: I just entirely filled my first Japanese notebook, and I also finished mastering writing the language!! (meaning I know when to use っ and 濁点/半濁点, when to use kun'yomi and on'yomi, all katakana combinations, how to read and write very large numbers, how to read and write dates and time, I could go on. I just meant to say that I didn't master the language, just the "read and write" aspects, sorry if that sounded pretentious lol), and now I'll start learning the grammar, which I'm *hyped* for. I'll also write down my thoughts: 1) I'm very surprised by how much I was able to learn in just under a month! 2) I have to say, I'm very scared of going back to school, because not only will I have way less time, I don't know if I'll have the mental energy to keep studying after I've been studying all day, but I'll do my best and study hard while I can!! 😁 Edit #3: 26/08/23: I'm updating very quickly after the second edit, but I know I need to say it; I'm gonna be changing my method for learning Japanese. All I used to do was just some traditional studying for about 1-2 hours a day, and sure, I was making progress, but there's no way I was gonna reach my goal within 2 years. So I'm gonna change to this plan: -Studying kanji from the Kanji Study app everyday by following the JLPT program -Reviewing what I know with Tango's N5 Anki Flashcards Deck -Traditional study from a PDF of Genki I textbook/Watching a Tokini Andy video (Whatever will feel more instructive) -And most importantly, consuming *ONLY* Japanese content. Watching Japanese videos, reading Japanese comments, attempting to reply in Japanese, and maybe reading a few Japanese books every once in a while to use Japanese as much as I can. I know it will work for me because that's how I learned English practically by accident, by simply consuming a lot of English media without actually ever trying to learn the language. I will mention though, that I am very scared of the different levels of politeness in the language. Japanese speakers will obviously use different levels depending on the situation, so I'll get a lot of mixed signals. But it's definitely gonna be way better than before. I'll keep you guys notified for anything that happens!! 😁 Edit #4: 30/09/23: Going back to school isn't nearly as time consuming as I thought it would be, of course I don't have nearly as much time to study as before but I still do meet my daily goal of 1 hour and 30 minutes per day of study, bare minimum. I should also mention that immersing as early as I did is a bad idea as it's very time consuming and exhausting to do anything because, well, you have to understand what you're seeing/hearing, and at a beginner level, you don't understand ANYTHING, so you don't end up retaining much. Instead, I spend *all of my free time* (carefully) watching GameGengo's vocab series, which is not the most common or even best way of getting input, but it's the only way I enjoy getting input, which does make it the best way for me because it's much easier studying when you enjoy it than not, and I already learned quite a bit from him. When I finish his series though, I think I'll just get input by watching Japanese TV Shows/playing video games in Japanese. I'll keep you guys updated! Edit #5: 15/11/23: I'm done with N5 material, which marks my first milestone! I'm so excited to study N4 Japanese! I've been loving studying Japanese, even more than when I started. In fact, I loved it so much that I even considered making a career out of it at one point (I would still love to, but it's unfortunately not a promising career choice because of AI, and it would require me to actually *live* in Japan for a few years, which I really don't want to do) I'm gonna try to study for a job that I enjoy thoroughly, but that also gives me enough time and money to visit Japan during the summer. Law school certainly doesn't lead to a job like that for me, so I'll have to reconsider my options (which means I don't have the pressure of having to be as good as possible before I go to law school!) I wish I could update you guys more often, but since I don't have unlimited characters, I think I'll start editing every time I pass a JLPT level. Edit #6: 17/01/24: I'm done with N4 material, and that means I'm gonna immerse myself in Japanese! That has been my plan since I've been studying for N5, but I'm kind of scared to find out how it will go now that I actually have to do it 😅. My reading speed has also drastically improved, I can read any text much more comfortably than I first started (as long as it doesn't have too many kanji that I don't know), but I'm still far from native level haha. As for you guys, I responded to most of your recent questions (I'm sorry for leaving you guys hanging!!), and I've also included my daily study plan which should be the 60th reply of this comment :)

One important thing I wanna point out is う is mostly used as an extended/long sound of the character before, we do not pronounce them! for example: とうきょう (Tokyo) う (u) is not pronounced at all, it stretches the sound of と (to) and きょ (kyo). In katakana, we use "ー" as the long sound symbal. Hope it helps yall if you got confused by the う sound in some words like me.

@cotton candy Nah it can be even more confusing since they share the same characters but different sounds and meaning. E.g 先生 means Mister (Mr.) or Sir. in Mandarin but Teacher in Japanese. The easiest way of learning Japanese from another language is if you learned 注音(ZhuYin), a method of writing a character via formation other than writing (strokes), 部首(BuShou) which uses the "category" of a set of characters to find the right one or 拼音(PinYin) which uses the sound to find the character. It is a common method of typing or reading used in Taiwan. Japanese is derived from Mandarin so it is easier but as long as you do not use existing knowledge, it is at most, A- tier difficulty. Hiragana and Katakana are parts that Mandarin does not have, making Mandarin the only system that has sounds which presents 10 to 100+ characters each.

Ya it’s been a month now and I’ve mostly gotten the vowels down. Sorta kicking myself I waited till now to start learning. Have always had an interest in Japan (no not cause of anime). And have wanted to visit. Guess as a kid that seemed unattainable so I never bothered to learn. But now as an adult it’s doable. And I’m a believer in if you go somewhere you should at the very least know enough of the language of where you’re going to be able to communicate at a basic level. Edit: First week was rough, but then bought a note book and started writing the symbols and the pronunciation.

Yejin Unicorn It takes time but if you keep memorizing it and identifying it. Your brain will be able to process it at a faster pace. The reason for the brain that’s processing slowly, is because it lacks experience. So that’s why it’s adapting in learning.

SO! I am so happy. A little over 100 days ago I decided to try to learn Japanese. I first watched this video and was like what? But watching this now, I'm shook at how much I've learned. I make sure to practice a little everyday even if for just a few minutes. It's really trippy to me. I can read/write Korean - so it's like that. Just seeing characters and being able to read them literally feels like unlocking a power. Anyone reading this: KEEP GOING! ~
