Nice Video - Something to add - always make sure to check with your PCB house for their particular DRC and confirm price increases vs. "standard" constraints. 0.2mm hole is a pretty common constraint I follow and I almost never get upcharged. If you use cheap PCB fabs like PCBway, OSH, etc you will see an upcharge for tighter constraints. The same goes for custom PCB stack up, if they have the material there is usually no upcharge. But if it is unique or special materials expect to see an upcharge, most people won't care about this part I assume because this is typically just important for high power and RF designs.

Thank you Robert !! Your tutorials helping me to learn Altium. I am a PCB designer and work on Eagle CAD and Gerbtool. I found out that Altium is best. I have a question, if you please answer it will be very helpful for me. Q. I want to change the annular ring of through hole components, I changed the drill diameter,say 0.8mm to 1.0mm for all components and so the annular ring decreases. I want to increase the pad diameter at once of that 0.8mm components, I don't want to do one by one for all components. My English is not good, I hope you understand my question. @@RobertFeranec I am currently at the 40 minute mark, its a lot of stuff to time stamp lol, quick question , I usually assemble my boards at home and I use the PCB view to see what component I am about to solder.. Is there a way to print the pcb layout with the designators that way i dont have to go from my bench to my PC constantly , I have tried but it always looks dark, since the pcb editor is a black background. I might have to invert the image in an imaging software.

Thanks for the video! Could you clarify how do you know where to place components when you say certain coordinates on the PCB, where are those coordinates coming from? Also, how do you decide which components to place on top and which on the bottom?
@RobertFeranec5 жыл бұрын
- Coordinates: this video is from our course and to help our students to have the board same / similar I say the coordinates. In reality, you only use coordinates for items and components which are defined in your system or by specification e.g. mounting holes, connectors etc. - Top vs Bottom: there is no general answer, but for example I place on the TOP components (usually chips) what may get hot (because I can connect them to heatsink if needed and also because heat rises up) and I place on the TOP tall components. On BOTTOM, very often there are decoupling capacitors or for example some small chips and small components.

Hi Robert, Your tutorials have been a great help in allowing me to quickly get acquainted with AD20 (I've been a PADS user for 15 years and P-CAD before that!). However, I do not get the color change when I place a component too close like your video shows and I followed the steps mentioned. What am I missing? I don't even get the little white numbers either and my Enable Online DRC box is checked. When I attempt to get a component closer. the component simply stops at some invisible barrier. Thanks for any insight you can provide!
@RobertFeranec3 жыл бұрын
Thank you William. Altium keeps changing default settings. Try: System Preferences (the wheel) -> PCB Editor -> DRC Violations Display and select Solid. Also double check in the list if Component Clearance rule is checked.

Thanks Robert. Very Helpful. Question why are the layer change VIAs placed "manually" after the trace is completed? Seems like an additional step?
@RobertFeranec4 жыл бұрын
Oh, if you like you can do it "automatically". I do it often manually, because when there are tracks on other layers, it was causing problems e.g. DRC was doing the placement difficult, or altium was moving the tracks on the other layers, also the Altium reaction was slow etc - it was much easier and faster just to copy and place the VIA.

I find it much more useful to enable shift+click to select primitives in the settings for pads instead of filter them out. I also do the same for polygons, fills and regions, because AD sadly always selects feature that is the biggest, and not the smallest. :-(
