How to start a pastel painting. Getting started in pastels correctly is key. Pastel artist Avon Waters explains the correct way to start a pastel painting. Like a good house, the foundation to anything must work or anything built onto it will have issues. Part 2 in the series of how to paint your first pastel, learning how to paint by copying others, this video shows how to take the large shapes drawn in Part 1 and block in the first colors. There’s more than one way to learn art, but copying the works of others is a great way to learn to use your pastels. You should not copy and sell these, that is stealing another person's work, but copying for educational purposes is a long held artist tradition still done in art schools today.
Art releieves the stress of our daily lives and work, and getting started in pastels, painting in pastels, and painting landscapes or any other genre, doesn’t have to be stressful or cause you pain. Art should bring your happiness and the early episodes of videos by Avon Waters on how to get started in art using pastel and pastel painting help you toward the goal of learning art, and living a happy life. Happiness through art is the ultimate goal of videos by nationally recognized pastel artist Avon Waters.

You’ll love pastel! I did oils for 40 years and decided to try pastel as a way to take a break for a week or two….that was Eight years ago and it became my primary medium. A pain to frame but worth it. Thanks

My first question : what are the colors on your drawing surface..do they have a purpose? Second point…we can’t see the reference photo properly. Any chance you could take a picture of it and post it so we could take a screenshot of it?

Sorry….The paper I used is U-Art sanded and the colors on it was left from an old painting that I had washed off to reuse the paper for this demo. The tones had no purpose in this demo, they were just there. I’m trying to figure out hoe to post the resource picture for you. Im new at this and right now all the instructions have me learning html computer language to attach it.

Why use black charcoal instead of black pastel? Is it just because it's what you had at hand ? I like your color layering I haven't done a pastel in years.

You can use either but typically charcoal sticks are harder and a bit less black, more grayish.
